Tried several times last 30 minutes and no connection to web site - not lookin' good for Friday Nite Lights fans....

Tonight at the Cal High/SRV game former Cal High head coach Eric Billeci will be honored. Eric coached 11 years there and had a hell of a run. Some people didn't like him, usually quarterbacks and their parents, or kids and parents that weren't willing to be held accountable. He ran a ground and pound power "I" formation and got more out of the talent he had than most coaches I've seen. He was old school and demanded accountability. It's nice to hear he will be getting the recognition he deserves.

Well, "local legend" is what is says in the press release, but I'd never heard of the attorney involved in the latest promotional material. She graduated from San Leandro in 2006, and played at Chico and Irvine. The answer awaits at the end ...

The press release came from AASEG, which announced Alana Beard as a leader in the investment group, and presumably as a front office worker for the team, should it form. There was nothing else substantial about the press release, though, as no dollars were mentioned or any further progress on getting the team.

Good PR, though ...

Oh, and the local legend? Jade Smith-Williams. Was she really?

Twenty years ago, Calpreps.com came online, three years before the advent of MaxPreps.com. Calpreps.com was a rudimentary website that tracked the results and standings of every high school football team and league in California. It features the most basic information: results, standings, average points scored and average points allowed.
Over the years, the site came up with an algorithm that allows Calpreps.com to rank every team in the state. As sections around the state — including the Central Coast Section— moved away from enrollment-based playoff brackets to a points-based system, the powers-that-be included Calpreps.com’s rankings as one of its criteria for deciding which teams will go in which bracket. In the CCS, the top 40 teams are ranked, in order by points, with the top eight going to Division 1, the next eight into Division 2 and so on.

Now, however, some Southern Section teams are pushing back against the Calpreps.com rankings, with coaches asking to be downgraded for a variety of reasons. This is a 180-degree turn for many high school teams, who used to beg to be ranked higher.

But as the gap between the public and private, and now also including charter schools, continues to widen, many programs are looking to avoid first-round playoff exits.

The situation has gotten so bad among Southern Section programs that Ned Freeman, one of the people who runs the site, had to post a memo on the front page of the website, which read, in part: “Please understand that we do not change ratings upon request so please save yourself the time/effort of asking for that,” Freeman wrote on the front page of the site.

The memo continued: “Rest assured, you will not receive a response to this insulting request. … We find it amusing that for two decades, we received emails of, ‘Our team should be rated SO (emphasis his) much higher’ type that now it’s suddenly flipped and we get ‘Our team should be rated SO much lower’ emails as coaches hope to work their way into a lower playoff division.”

It wasn’t too long ago that many coaches pooh-poohed winning a lower-level section title, believing it was worth less than winning a section crown in a higher division.

No bashing intended. If Folsom is going to beat their SFL opponents by 3or 4 touchdowns who should their pre- league games all be? There’s a lot of second guessing of their schedule so I’m wondering what those of you with more knowledge than me anyway think. Keeping in mind travel expenses etc?

PCAL Week 10

Last 2 weeks of the regular season are here. Most of the teams have established themselves as playoff contenders or pretenders. Top 5 in the Gabilan are basically set with Salinas, Aptos, Hollister, Palma and Christopher. Alvarez and Alisal have a chance for an at large. In the mission Santa Cruz is going. But 3 teams, Soquel, North Salinas, and Gilroy are battling for 2 spots. In the Cypress, Scott’s Valley is the clear favorite after its big win last week. King City should get an at large if it wins it’s final 2 games. St. Francis CC wrapped up the Santa Lucia title weeks ago. For the most part teams will just be playing for seeds.

I got a little carried away with upsets last week, so did not do that well.

Thu 10/28 Palma (Salinas, CA) vs Christopher (Gilroy, CA) at Salinas Sports Complex (Salinas, CA), 7:30pm- Christopher will be tough, But Palma’s high powerd offense will be to much. Palma 35-14

Fri 10/29 Alvarez (Salinas, CA) at Salinas (CA), 7:30pm -Salinas, as usual after an off week, will probably come out slow, but they are way too good to lose at home to Alvarez. Salinas 49-14

Fri 10/29 Monte Vista Christian (Watsonville, CA) at San Benito (Hollister, CA), 7:30pm – Cal Preps has this one being 50-0. Hollister will win just think it will be a little closer. Hollister 42-7

Fri 10/29 Alisal (Salinas, CA) at Seaside (CA), 7:30pm- Alisal needs to win in order to keep its slim playoff hopes alive. Seaside is just playing for pride. Alisal 24-14



Mission:

Fri 10/29 Santa Cruz (CA) at Gilroy (CA), 7:30pm- A win by Gilroy puts them in a first place tie. Not going to happen. Santa Cruz 44-10

Fri 10/29 Monterey (CA) at Gonzales (CA), 7:30pm – Neither team going to the playoffs, if Monterey contains themselves they will win. Gonzales will talk a lot, Monterey cant get caught up in it. Monterey 24-14

Fri 10/29 North Salinas (Salinas, CA) at Soquel (CA), 7:30pm – (Game has been moved to Saturday night) Soquel does a real good job of getting a play when they need it. Nothing fancy just football. They don’t blow you out, they just win. Soquel 21-20

Sat 10/30 Soledad (CA) at Carmel (CA), 2:00pm- If Carmel wants to salvage a .500 season they need to win. They had a good showing vs Soquel, but just not enough on offense. This is not your typical Carmel team with the big plays an speed all over. Most of their scores have come on longer drives, west coast offense style, short passes with the run mixed in. Soledad is still searching for an identy, but they are always up for Carmel, so I expect a physical game. Carmel 20-14



Cypress

Thu 10/28 Rancho San Juan (Salinas, CA) at Watsonville (CA), 7:00pm- Rancho has a great story and some good wins, Watsonville pretty average this year. I will take average tonight!. Watsonville 24-7

Sat 10/30 King City (CA) at San Lorenzo Valley (Felton, CA), 2:00pm; KC needs to win to keep playoff hopes alive. Should be no problem vs a beaten up SLV squad. KC 30-7

Sat 10/30 Pacific Grove (CA) at Scotts Valley (CA), 2:00pm: PG is now 5-2, if they win their next 2 games they will be 7-2, league champs and claim the automatic birth to the playoffs!!! They wont as they have Scott’s valley and King City for their last 2 games. Scott’s Valley 32-7





Santa Lucia

Fri 10/29 Pajaro Valley (Watsonville, CA) at Harbor (Santa Cruz, CA), 7:30pm- Should be an evenly matched game, Winer finishes 4th loser in 5th (last place). Taking the home team. Harbor 27-25

Sat 10/30 St. Francis (Watsonville, CA) at Stevenson (Pebble Beach, CA), 2:00pm non-league game: Totally hedging my bet here. If RLS WR1 is playing the pirates will avenge their league loss to St. Francis, if he is out (left last game with a very bad shoulder injury) The Sharks win again. RLS 28-20 (with WR1) St. Francis 28-20 (W/O).

CIF stated by November 1st they would have an update on masks for players and refs for basketball. Have not heard any news as we approach the start in 4 days.

Any playoff system will have issues and it is coming up in the Southern Section. See similar things in basketball prior to NorCal brackets

Bishop O’Dowd (4-4) has won three in a row since early losses to San Ramon Valley, St. Mary’s-Stockton, El Cerrito and Liberty. Senior running back Matt White (5-foot-10, 170 pounds) has rushed for 849 yards and 10 touchdowns in seven games, including a season high 204 yards and three touchdowns last week against Piedmont. On Friday, it travels to fellow 4-4 Logan.

Player Notes

De Anza 2022 athlete Anthony Freeman announced his commitment to Sacramento State on Tuesday. He is a shifty runner whether on hand-offs, short passes or in the return game. Defensively (where he likely ends up), Freeman roams the middle of the field and plays the ball well in the air.

JUCO Notes

Contra Costa is 6-0 as running back Mike Franklin has rushed for 511 yards and six touchdowns. In last week’s win over Foothill, he rushed for 160 yards and three touchdowns. This week, Contra Costa will take on undefeated Feather River.

Alumni Watch

UC Davis running back Ulonzo Gilliam Jr. (Merced) has rushed for more than 3,200 yards in his career with the Aggies. Earlier this month, he became the third player in school history to rush for more than 3,000 yards.

Has anyone seen the kid from Modesto that plays QB? Awesome story. I have a friend that coaches a blind kid. Bowling as my friend says is very precise. So easy to follow. But QB? I love it.

Team Notes

Placer has won three in a row since a 0-5 start. In the first five games, the Hillmen gave up 37.6 points per game. In the last three games against Nevada Union, Rio Linda and Oakmont, they are giving up an average of 15 points per game. Their opponent this week, Ponderosa (4-3), is averaging 27 points per game and has lost its three games by a combined 17 total points.

Player Notes

San Marin 2022 RB/DB Justin Guin (5-foot-11, 180 pounds) continued his good season with more than 100 rushing yards in a 21-14 loss to Marin Catholic on Saturday. Guin is a solid back with a nice blend of strength and agility to shake defenders. Defensively, he attacks the line of scrimmage and is a good tackler.

JUCO Notes

Despite out gaining Monterey Peninsula (4-3), Merced (4-4) fell 40-35 this past weekend. In the loss, Ryan Kraft (Bret Harte) threw for 338 yards and two touchdowns. MPC ran for 249 yards led by Devin Bradd, who finished with 135 yards.

Alumni Watch

Notre Dame defensive back TaRiq Bey (Milpitas) had a team high seven tackles and a fumble recovery in a 31-16 win over USC. Defensive end Isaiah Foskey (De La Salle) had two sacks.

Menlo-Atherton 2022 wide receiver Jalen Moss made numerous big plays in last week’s win over Terra Nova. He finished with 236 yards and two touchdowns.

Team Notes

The East Bay Athletic League - Mountain Division has four teams with thin margins between them. In the newest NCP Top 35, Monte Vista, California, Clayton Valley Charter and San Ramon Valley are all between No. 18 and No. 22. These teams have played three games between themselves with the home team winning one possession games (Monte Vista over Cal, Cal over Clayton Valley Charter, Clayton Valley Charter over San Ramon Valley). This week. Cal will host San Ramon Valley and Clayton Valley Charter welcomes Monte Vista.

Player Notes

De La Salle 2023 running back Charles Greer (5-foot-10, 180 pounds) has been a breakout player this fall for the Spartans and recently picked up an offer from Florida Atlantic. He has good vision and a good stutter step move to freeze defenders before bouncing runs outside.

JUCO Notes

Avant Jacobs (Oak Ridge) ran for 128 yards and three touchdowns and was American River’s (4-3) second leading receiver in a 38-22 win over winless Santa Rosa (0-7). Jake Simmons (Rancho Cotate) threw for 207 yards and three touchdowns in the loss.

Alumni Watch

Cal got its first Pac-12 win on Saturday with a 26-3 victory over Colorado. Tight ends Keleki Latu (Jesuit) and Gavin Reinwald (Elk Grove) accounted for both touchdown catches. Nate Landman (Monte Vista) had 10 tackles for Colorado.

Monte Vista improved to 7-0 with a 27-22 home win over California. It continues a nice turnaround for the Mustangs under first year head coach CJ Anderson.

From this past weekend, the San Mateo Daily Journal had an informative writeup from Half Moon Bay’s thrilling win over Burlingame. Half Moon Bay (3-4) has three losses to undefeated teams (Salinas, Serra and Los Gatos) and No. 16 overall Menlo-Atherton.

Maddie Mersch will be one of the top players in the North Coast Section for this coming season.

Enough about Folsom. Biggest story of 2021. Cronin, who just became all time winningest coach in redwood empire last weekend, takes his 7-0 Windsor squad against his former Cardinal Newman Team which he built into a state powerhouse at the small/medium school level over the last 2 decades. Newman has played a good schedule and Sanchez has the kids playing well. I think weather becomes a factor with rain in forecast all week. Newman ground Game is better so this could impact Windors ability to throw. We shall see.
I think Windsor wins but it will be a great game. 28-24.

personally will be cheering for newman but always pulling for coach Cronin who is a class act.
