A dose of reality and UConn

USA Today has some interesting quotes re Geno's success at UConn. Maryland Coach Brenda Frese, among others, said parity in the women's game is almost non-existent. And it's hurting the sport, big-time. The idea that only a handful of women's programs have a reasonable shot at a national title is harmful. The lack of competition is not healthy. Frankly, the way UConn manhandles the rest of the field has become a huge bore. It's just not watchable.

Cal Could Land Package Deal of Rabb, Swanigan

Cal Could Land Package Deal of Rabb, Swanigan
From the article:

"Cal could land a package deal of big men Ivan Rabb and Caleb Swanigan by the end of the weekend.

All signs pointing to Caleb Swanigan and Ivan Rabb heading to Cal, sources told ESPN. Right now, that's where they are heading to play. - Jeff Goodman (@GoodmanESPN) April 10, 2015
Both players could announce this weekend at the Nike Hoop Summit, with Swanigan having said he will announce Saturday. The game is set for 3 p.m. ET on ESPN2."

Elite Eight Results

Morning games saw Clayton Valley Charter beat Arroyo (6-3) and California move past Palma (8-5).

The final Day 1 games will be College Park-St. Mary's (Stockton) and St. Francis-Newark Memorial. May get a College Park-St. Francis semi-final.

I'll be in Mountain View for the final three games on Wednesday.

Donovans Girls Shine Bright in Defeat

Special training:[/B] After a 40-36 loss in the Division V girls final, Eastside College Prep's six players stood poised at the free-throw line wearing "Seal Team Six" T-shirts over their uniforms. Coach Donovan Blythe [/B]embraced Navy Seal training early in the season and his team regularly had 5:30 a.m. practices. All of it led to the school's first Northern California title.
"It's been an unbelievable season," he said. "I'm at a loss for words. ... I couldn't be prouder of a group of six girls."

High School Umpiring

What does an association "do" if a tenured member - with 99% impeccable plate mechanics - also has a dark side to his being able to handle game situations without ejecting players and coaches. This individual has had 6 ejections and three appeals have gone in favor of those he ejected. Whether behind the plate or on the bases - it seems terminal - that every before game, in game and post game confrontation - no matter how small leads to this umpire taking glee in ejecting the participants or their coaches.

Delta League Openers

Delta League started play on Monday:

Grant beat Monterey Trail 14-3 (Polo Portela had 3 RBI)
Elk Grove beat Sheldon 6-4 (Elk Grove got up 7-0 with Sheldon starting Manning)
Jesuit beat Pleasant Grove 3-1 (don't know who threw for Jesuit, but Gomez went for PG)
Franklin beat Davis 5-4 (Franklin scored in the seventh to tie the game and won it in the eighth)

There will be rematches on Wednesday in a new format for the Delta this year.

Hannah Huffman

I wondered if Hannah Huffman had made the right choice by going to Notre Dame, because she risked sitting on the bench for her whole career in a program like that -- and isn't it more fun to play a lot?

Well, Hannah and her family clearly made the right choice, because even though she doesn't get big minutes, she was the one on the floor, guarding SEC Player of the Year and WNBA first-round pick Tiffany Mitchell, with Notre Dame up one and 15 seconds left (or whatever).

I think Notre Dame might have been in a box-and-one (I haven't tried to look), but Huffman, not noted for her defense at Carondelet, made Mitchell have to use a screen, and then tipped away a pass when she double-teamed her, sending Notre Dame to the championship game.

Congrats to Hannah and the Irish ... I don't know if you can ask for more than making a huge play on national TV that gives your team a shot at a national title.
