2017 WCAL - Looking Forward

I wouldn't count out Mitty in this contest. This is playoff football anything can happen. In there first match up Mitty had 382 total yards to Serra's 372 but Serra benefited from intercepting Tran 3 times. If Tran can put in a no interception game this matchup could be a much closer contest.
Last weeks games are a great example of winning the turnover battle. LG outgained Mitty by over 170 yds (469 to 297) but turned it over four times and paid for it with the loss. Bellarmine turned it over 5 times and also paid for it with a loss. Playoff football is definitely unforgiving.
Serra has done a exceptional job this year taking care of the ball in comparison to recent teams but if that trend breaks Mitty will be posed to take this one.
Any one know if Kendrick will be playing? Per SMDJ he was out in 2nd half of SF game with concussion.

Here's another "if": If Mitty had played better during the regular season, they wouldn't have entered the playoffs at 5-5.

But, they did.

There's probably a reason for that.

How the Top WCAL Teams Rank vs the Best in NorCal

NorCal Football Top 25 Teams - Week 13 - A compilation of the major rankings polls

Thought it'd be fun to post this again as I follow the various rankings/polls which consist mostly of NCP's -Weekly Top 20 along with the SF Chron + Bay Area News Group + Freeman Rankings + MaxPreps + of course NorCalPreps. Now I won't say which particular rankings, but 2 are way off base on selection and ranking, but I'll leave that up to you to figure out [the ones you wouldn't expect to be off]. I follow weekly via Freeman's and find it odd they can be off by so much on several teams. It appears IMO they are looking at all the data, but ignoring some of the data when it comes to specific teams or sections [which if you treated all the teams equally then the various polls should be somewhat similar, right?]. So here are the Rmbr26 Top 25 NorCal Rankings with much help from Freeman's via the computers who have no favorites in ranking the teams -simply their records, who've they've played and scores of all games/teams as well as opponents win/loss records and that of their opponents [pretty hard to argue with that, right?]. I will say that the top 2 are a toss-up as well as 3 & 4 depending on your perspective and of course some teams match up better than others. This is a list which is a complilation of all the other rankings polls with adjustments to attempt to treat them all equally. So here it is with the most important criteria shown along side each team [“Strength of Schedule” & Opponents Overall Win/Loss Records].

These 2 considerations will give fans a good idea of how easy or how tough the road was to each teams record. Ex: an 11-0 team with a SOS rating of 15 and Opponents W-L record of 50-70 should not be as highly ranked as a 9-2 team with a SOS rating of 30 and Opponents W-L record of 70-50 [Make sense?]. So here we go – here are the first 15 teams with the remaining 10 teams to be posted tomorrow Wednesday, 11/23.

Rmbr26 NorCal Top 25 Teams:

Team/Record - “SOS” - Opponents Win-Loss Records

HMB beat Menlo the first time they played. The Moon is healthy. The Moon has played a tougher schedule. The Moon should be favored. Then again, I had France beating Germany in OT in 1914.

That was my first thought colhenry, however upon further review I had to go with Menlo taking revenge for the previous in season loss. I root for HMB, but hard to overook the Menlo 7-game streak. I like underdogs, but like win-streaks better. Prove me wrong HMB & Good Luck!

I'm sure Newton and family will be ready but after the PAL meeting the other night there are some pretty...... let's say unhappy folks here on the Coastside.

Isaiah Rodriguez caps the Warrior drive off with a 4 yard TD run. PAT is good. VC 14 Palma 3, 7:16 left in 2nd

14-10 VC end of 3. It's like deja vu all over again. All VC needs is one TD to put this game away, and like the SF game they can't seem to score in the second half. This has been a pattern for many years in big games. Put the ball in the end zone!!!!

Serra 23-14 with 9-min. in 4th, Serra has committed a lot of penalties, but stopped Mitty 4th & goal from the 1 earlier. Mitty playing very well and giving Serra all they can handle tonite. Have to give Mitty credit as they are really scrappy & doing everything they have to to try to win.

VC nearly gave it away, but defense decided not to let it happen.

Palma's Emilio Martinez had 212 yards and 1 TD. VC d-line seemed was having problems with Palma's zone blocking. Martinez was past the d-line all night and was driving ahead for extra yards. Palma had hard matchup against tall VC Wrs. Kendrick was 5-6 in first half with 101 yards and then cooled off. . Flores had some big plays at WR I though at times VC was very conservative on offense. Seemed a couple times they could have went on 4th down and punted. Palma play calling on offense especially some of the pass calls hurt them. They were in VC territory and instead of keeping with the running game where Martinez was getting at least 3-5 years a carry even after VC adjusted some would do deep drop back passes and QB sacked (good VC pressure though) or they would end up 3rd and deep. Lots of inopportune penalties as well. Was a good game close game though. I am surprised how conservative on play calling Machado is. Seems he's gotten more conservative. VCs Rodriguez and Sturm had a couple nice runs in the first half. Palma for the most part shut down VCs offense in the second half. VC offense reminded me almost like Bells team of a couple years ago....long sustained drives that take 3/4 a quarter. Both teams burn time on the clock.

NorCal - Interesting that Palma RB Emilio Martinez had 212 yards rushing while VC's Javon Sterns & Rodriguez had a combined 178 between them. Prior to game if you told me that I'd think Palma would win the game. Seeing how VC's Miles Kendrick was 7 of 8 for 123 yards I'm guessing that Palma's Martinez didn't get much contribution from any other RB's and Palma's pass game was not productive as well [no game stats posted by Palma or in any write-ups].

Serra - CCS Open II Champ
Valley Christian - CCS Open III Champ

So now that we know Mitty is out [Milpitas in] that leaves 2 WCAL teams moving onto regionals along with the WCAL 9th team Palma. VC & Serra finished the CCS ranked #1 & #2 and as tri-champs with St. Francis of the WCAL. Serra's only WCAL loss to VC and VC's only loss to St. Francis with SF losing in league to Serra and also in the semi-final of Open II playoffs.
Currently VC is ranked 30th in state & Serra 35th. Here are the only NorCal teams ranked above these 2 WCAL teams:

#6-Freedom
#8-Folsom
#9-DLS
#10-St. Mary's
#15-Del Oro
#16-Pitt

Does anyone think either Serra or VC will advance past the next round? [Opponents still TBD].

WCAL Football 2016

How do Valley Christian & Serra looking moving on to sectional match-ups?
Everyone is looking to the blockbuster games coming up this weekend between the best teams of the NCS & Sac-San Joaquin sections including: DLS vs Freedom, Antioch vs Monte Vista, Bishop O’Dowd vs Marin Catholic, St. Mary’s vs Folsom, Del Oro vs Inderkum, Christian Bros. vs Oakdale among others. Not knowing who VC & Serra will face yet let’s look at how the 2 top teams in the CCS section have performed to date in winning Div. I & II CCS titles.

Valley Christian “Warrior’s” 12-1 #1 ranked team in CCS tied for 1rst place in WCAL with only loss of season in overtime to St. Francis by a field goal 13-10. Went on to win Div. III Championship by 14-10 over a tough Palma team that had won 10 straight games. VC is rated at 51.8 with “SOS” [strength of schedule] rating of 29.9 and all opponent’s records of 89-62. VC for the season averaged 28.7 points per game offense and gave up 11.2 PPG on defense with average margin of victory by +17.5 PPG.

Serra “Padres” 9-4 #2 ranked team in CCS tied for 1rst place in WCAL with VC & SF with only league loss in first game of league play to Valley Christian in a game that went down to the wire by 35-28. Serra handed St. Francis its only 2 defeats of the season winning 41-40 in O/T in league and then convincingly 31-17 in the CCS Div II semi-final. Serra went on to defeat Mitty in the D-II Championship 37-24. Serra is rated just below VC at 50.5 with an SOS of 37.4 and all opponents records of 100-51. Serra for the season averaged 37.3 PPG while allowing 26.9 for margin of victory of 10.3. The season stats however are heavily out of proportion to how Serra ended the season due to its first 4 games. In those 4 games Serra had the toughest schedule in NorCal and played several of the games with limited participation from its QB Leki Nunn and also TC Lavulo Serra’s best player on defense. During those first games Serra lost 63-35 to St. Mary’s, DLS 47-13 and Pitt 48-25 which greatly affects Serra’s overall season stats. Looking at the WCAL league stats with Serra at full strength Serra’s offense improved to 42.7 PPG and Defense improved to allowing 19.5 PPG. The point of the comparison is that Serra is a much different team now than early on in the season. A good example would be the DLS game in which Serra lost 47-13 with Nunn in limited capacity and the 3rd QB soph Luke Bottari taking over. In comparison in recent weeks Monte Vista who had a relatively soft schedule compared to Serra went into the game 10-0 vs DLS and lost 45-17 [nearly the same score as the Serra game]. Clayton Valley [“CVC”] had one close loss to Folsom and went into the DLS game looking to take down DLS only to lose by 28-0 in a shut-out. One other note: Serra led St. Mary’s by 35-28 after Leki Nunn returned the 2nd ½ kickoff before exiting the game [so no Nunn or Lavulo], and Serra went on to lose scoring no other points in the 2nd ½.

What to expect of VC & Serra moving forward: VC is a more one dimensional team who seems to start fast and then grind it out in the 2nd ½ of games. Strong O-line and run game with very limited passing, but a very capable athlete in QB Miles Kendrick who is an efficient clutch player. VC looks terrific at times and a bit sluggish other times. VC will do best against another team who relies primarily on a run game similar to VC [such as Palma]. Not quite sure how VC will do against a team with a good passing game. Serra is a bit more explosive and unpredictable. The Padres are a relatively young team that relies on its 2 senior leaders in Nunn & Lavulo, but also has a good RB in Kendrick and 3 capable and tall WR’s. Serra is capable of scoring points against any team they play and merely a question of how much the Padre defense has improved with the multiple player changes they’ve made since early in the season. No matter who VC & Serra face I would look for the both games to be competitive.

Recent WCAL Teams to make it to Sectional Playoff Games:

2015
Bellarmine over Folsom 42-25
Bells lose in state bowl game by 24-0 to Mission Viejo
St. Francis over Pleasant Valley [Chico] 29-7
SF loses in state bowl game by 23-20 to Citrus Hill

2013
Serra loses to Del Oro 28-20

2012
St. Ignatius loses to Granite Bay 45-17

@Rmbr26 There have been rumblings that the intersectional rule might be waived to increase the gates, which would mean that Serra/Valley would play to likes of Cardinal Newman, M-A, Campolindo etc. Have you heard this as well?

No CoachKLou am not aware of such discussion, but should hear with next few days of any changes. That would certainly add a twist to the picture - can't wait to see match-ups after this weekends games.

Agree colhenry as think MA is one of the hottest CCS teams to finish season and strong in playoffs with shut-outs of 21-0 over Bells [Huh?] and then
17-0 over Milpitas. Some very good athletes down there at MA and Serra has looked a little better each week as well. Serra on 9-game win streak and MA on 11-game win streak [that doesn't happen by accident].

2016 CIF State Championship Bowl Games Brackets

North: Cardinal Newman (12-1) at Valley Christian (12-1), San Jose – Friday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m.

With losses by other highly ranked teams both Valley Christian & Serra [#1 & 2 in CCS] have crept up in the rankings with VC now ranked #32 and Serra #34 in California. The SF Chron bay area Top 25 came out this morning with 4 WCAL teams ranked: Valley Christian moved up to #6 [1-spot], Serra moved up to #8 [3-spots], St. Francis dropped from #6 to #10 & Mitty previously unranked moved into the rankings at #18. With wins both Serra & VC could obviously move up further in all rankings polls. Serra's previous high ranking was in 2013 when Serra was ranked #30 in state after losing to Del Oro by 28-20 in the sectional playoff.

Sorry Defense_Rules - thanks for pointing out as didn't realize there were 2 different Valley Christian schools in Div II games [and just glanced & thought they abbreviated "Bishop O'Dowd"]. My bad! Any predicts for VC-CN Defense?

DIVISION 2–AA
North: Cardinal Newman (12-1) at Valley Christian (12-1), San Jose – Friday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m.

I'll go 17-14 VC. VC will be up 17-7 at half and need one more score to put the game away. Machado will go conservative, CN will score and VC will not. VC's defense will save the day and VC will squeak out the win.

I'm really intrigued by this matchup. I've been interested to know how Cardinal Newman would stack up against WCAL teams. In 1996 they squeeked a win against St. Francis in Mountain View, and I think that was one of their better teams. Albeit St. Francis started off 0-6 that season.

Good luck VC!

Cardinal Newman played Valley Christian in 2010 and 2011. They split... 34-0 Valley Christian and 35-28 CN.

Card Newman had a strength of schedule rating of 17.6 while Valley Christian had a rating of 30.0

CN's biggest win was 35-34 over Rohnert Park, but played well in 49-32 loss to St. Mary's

VC's biggest win was 35-28 over Serra & lone loss to St. Francis 13-10 in O/T

VC looks to have the edge, but should be a competitive game

CN had played Rancho Cotate, not Rohnert Park. RP is just the city.

I think VC will score around 28-21 points and Newman between 24-14 points. There is room for either team to win it.
