2019-20 WCAL Hoops Wrap Up/2020-21 Outlook

That is your articulate response???

You are a Riordan parent who has the great pleasure of watching your son play at a program that carries great a legacy in prep Basketball. I believe you even supported your son’s desire to transfer to be apart of it.

But the Riordan Legacy will carry on, I hope this season. But I guarantee for many season later.

(To think you bring more to the program than a 3 year parent, I suggest you are delusional)

I wish, hope, pray and believe in the success of Riordan. Not for any players individually, but for a program that was recognized on ESPN for supporting a Team Manager and providing the culture of success to young men and soon young women.

A true Riordan parent doesn’t where a players name on their sweatpants they wear an “R” or end their enlightening post with: #WeRiordan

You should also tell the Freshmen coaching staff and JV staff as well since I bought them shirts as well with their names on them.

So your very articulate response full of fiction, you can't get one like? One person out of thousands to say great write up?

So Sfcity fan , If I were to wear sweat pants with my son name on them I am totally within my right. The only thing since you are stalking me from a distance I do not own any pants with my son name on it. I do however own a R shirt with my name on it just like all the R shirts with their name on it that I purchased for the team, the coaches, and the team managers, KNOW YOUR FACTS. Your up at 2:38am writing on the boards? Interesting, couldn't sleep? Upset about the loss? Bryce isn't the first person to transfer and will not be the last. Bryce is happy at Riordan and loves fighting with his team. Nice of you to bring that up" Riordan supporter though?" The more you type and respond you show your true colors. Keep it going. Like I said We are who we R, a consolation team for now with an opportunity to do more. Pull together and make a run.
Not only did he post at 238am but he edited his post at 253am hahaha.....safe to say Renard you are living "rent free"

Could not make it. Been away on business all week and was hoping there was a stream so I could catch the game in-flight. Wow! This board reminds me of the old days with IHOP, JSQUARE, and the rest! Now we have some next gen posters on this board. Great to see the passion! Lol! This team has me scratching my head - lots of talent, seem to enjoy themselves playing together...Final score was 66-60? Not all that gloom and doom. Could they have won with good FT shooting? Were there a lot turnovers? Didn't see the box score but how did Jelani and Bryce do? Rebounding? If any of these were missing, I can see losing to a well-coached team playing for a 3rd time. I thinks us "grown ups" take losses a lot harder than the kids IMHO. Consider this a life lesson on how to deal with adversity and a challenge and let's see how this team figures it out. It's that simple. Go Crusaders!
They could have won with a better game plan and an actual zone offense. Period. Same old story of all the other games they struggled in but were bailed out by their superior talent. Tonite its caught up with them, as it will again. Been watching this stale zone offense all season, bailed out by their talent. Wake up.

The old principal and Coach Buck clashed over a few issues and he wanted to move him OUT. That is what happened.

The question from many alumni is how did Curtin get the job in the first place? Buckner was let go because the AD at the time said they were looking for a coach that was also on full-time staff. Of the primary sports at Riordan (football, baseball, Wrestling )he is the only part timer.

disagree. The 9-0 winning streak was a good winning streak. AND showed the promise off the team. EVEN THOUGH during the streak there wasnt a complete game. WELL maybe Bellermine...BUT good team wins...

FORSULAND. He was/is an asset that should've been used. But it didnt work out. A CLASH. That should've been worked out. IT Didnt. He was/is the greatest coach in Riordan history. well either him or Kevin Eagleson. He is kinda dogmatic in his approach. AND i don't know if these millenials would buy all the way in. BUT he is missed...

And oftentimes us old heads [my bday was the other day] Romanticize about the old days. In the 1980s/1990s. LETS BE honest Riordan underachieved back then. Isola Bless his heart A good man and all. But he was in over his head. RIORDAN most talened team in 1985 lost in TOC in second round to Fremont. They should've won a state title back then but couldn't seal the deal in that run from 1984 to 1990. IN 1990 WITH Coach Forsuland as an assistant on staff they came close lost in state finals. But Isola and FORSULAND clashed after. Personalities . AND HE left and came back 7 years later. 4 YEARS later after he came back in state title game....

Hey the team this year might have peaked. IT HAS BEEN a slight roller coaster, last 2 weeks. BUT they are gonna right the ship. I hope. Everyone needs to dig deep. Players. COACHES. etc...

THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM! Been saying it since the 9 game winning streak of SMOKE AND MIRRORS! All the fools on here went gaga over this team. Someone even had the audacity to label the coach the best in Norcal! GTFOH!!!!!! Im disappointed in this Board in that they never saw the flaw. Just happy going along. A few did. A few agreed. But the majority of you. SHAME ON YOU fo not seeing that. Riordan NEVER adjusted from their Shell game pathetic Zone offense. Short Corner? HAH! Whats that? Someone running baseline? HAH why waste energy. Absolute abomination tonight. I aint here to blame players. Everyone in the world knows the scouting report. Sit in zone and hope Jelani and Bryce are not hot. Not once did we ever adjust. We got a a share of the League title, but man, this season left a lot to be desired. 2 biggest games of the last 2 seasons. CCS Semis last year. CCS First round this year. BIG. FAT. LOSS. Unreal. Go ahead and come at me with all your smoke, cause this is nothing new, Ive been saying this all year!!!

Ronnie I had talent up and down the roster. Not even close to whats on this team. Hell, you could have a CCS #1 seed from kids who were ineligible back in the day. He did have a better zone offense than this current squad, Im being sarcastic dont quote me LOL well, maybe just a tad better with side away offense hahahaha

Mention the word "Riordan" and all hell breaks loose. It doesn't matter what the topic is. Bring up "Riordan" and the entire conversation changes. We'll say one thing: Those connected with "Riordan" are passionate. Good for them.

I guess I will have to wait until 2:53 for his articulate response? Real Riordan parent? I need some of these real Riordan parents help me pay Patrick's stipend to do something he has been doing for Riordan for over 20 years and is a graduate of Riordan. I am only stating this since you came at me. But not only this year but last year as well every senior on the team INCLUDING THE TEAM MANAGER GOT A GIFT BAG FROM ME WITH Backpacks, sweatsuits, socks, flip flops, etc in them. Also since we finished with SHC I got Miles Jones and Kori Mccoy gift bags as well. REAL RIORDAN PARENT! LOL. #IAMRENARD AND YOU ARE? OH SCREEN NAME MY APOLOGIES

Great convo going back and forth, as one guy above said the passion shows.

I think Riordan has a out now of the Open and with all the mentioning of the zone offense issues, personally I think getting to state in the open would be one hell of a challenge. I don’t know how three WCAL teams make the open, especially with the splits with Mitty and Bellarmine who are on the winners side. I could be wrong but I see the team falling to D-1. If that’s the case, I would love to see a Riordan De La Salle matchup myself.

Their was mention of them having a 9-0 streak, unfortunately the seasoned coaches find ways to adjust and unfortunately if preparation is a issue, well those coaches will beat you. The players no doubt play the game, but at this level steps away from NorCal and a possible state title appearance, the players also need to be fully prepped and put in the best position to win.

With that said, the doctor. He is a good friend and could have been a huge asset to a team so talented such as this which on paper is just a tad below Sheldon. The team has major talent, but if I had to put money on it, I think he enjoys being a assistant these days and personally I think if he landed back as a head in the WCAL, it would truly have to be his way a majority of the time. The man is seasoned, and one of the best preparation coaches hands down. Weeks into the 2002 season, he incorporated a 1-3-1 at practice. Never was it used, until all the marbles were on the line. Tofi and company started in a man against Centenial, went to a 2-3, then a 1-2-2, and they scored with ease until finally in the second quarter to a 1-3-1, and that cause fits for Aaron Affalo and company.

Also and with all due respect, playing at 5 is a preparation issue. Try leaving SF at 10am on a Wednesday, grabbing lunch, thank God Hoosiers was on the TV system, grabbing a light dinner, pre planned shoot around at Liberty Christian, and then a hard fought battle against Brody Angley and company in front of the most raucous and passionate fans in Redding and coming away with a win. Getting back at 2AM, and having to immediately go into preparation mode for a Saturday night barn burner in Sacramento. At this level preparation doesn’t just call for X’s and O’s.

Lastly I see mention of a team being underachievers or overachievers, this team is loaded with talent. Two fantastic d1 guards, the best tandem since the Kelly and Manigo days, great height, Hubbard has been a factor, the kid who was hurt for a minute has been a factor. I don’t think you rate this team either way. This is a team if well prepared beats darn near everybody and in my opinion wins by 20 last night.

Just my two cents. I am a WCAL homer, and would
love to see Riordan represent at state as well as a few others if it all shakes out. Bellarmine and Mitty will have a tough road. Personally when all is on the line I don’t see them beating Sheldon.

Good luck to all. Although stressful, the road to a state title game is full of fun and is a fantastic experience for the kids.

I am glad you contributed to keeping Pat stats on board. He is a huge asset especially during halftime when adjustments need to be made. And of course come games end, stats tell the stories in many ways. I was fortunate for many years to sit on the floor after the 2002 season at Arco, and Pat was kid enough to bring me a stat sheet at the half and after the final. I truly wish I would have kept them, to have stat sheets with guys like Klay Thompson, James Harden and other NBA players would be great to have today.

Little forgotten facts: That 84-85 team was the best Riordan team, and all of those boys were from The City. They played all-world Crenshaw in the preseason and only lost by 4 in SoCal , and had beaten Logan, who ended up playing in the Finals that year. In the TOC semifinal loss to Fremont-Oakland, Terrence Mullins did not play due to an ankle injury at practice that week. Mullins is probably the best player to ever come out of Riordan. Also that 85-86 team was undefeated until 6'9" center Chris Munk tore his ACL at a preseason tourney in Arkansas. They ended up losing a close one to Bishop O'Dowd in the NorCals. They had already beaten Skyline twice, who were led by Gary Payton and Greg Foster. Say what you will about Isola, but he wasn't afraid to schedule anyone. He had his team (w/Brett Crawford, Phil Kess, Frank Avalos, Alex Lopez, Byron Lewis, et al) playing in Hawaii in 1979 before HS travel teams became popular. He travelled to SoCal to play their best, and the King Cotton Classic. He had a 16-team Crusader Classic one year bringing in teams from all over. He lost the Div1 State Championship by 2 points to a taller Mater Dei team, after Riordan lost their 6'9" center Reggie Johnson to grades/transfer in December. Got to respect that record.

I think one thing that would be awesome in the WCAL is if one school and one or two joined in hosting a national tournament. It’s the second best league in the state hands down. Bring a team or two from the EBAL, a few other great nor cal teams and some big teams nationwide, it would be a awesome event

Best-ever Crusader: Kevin Restani. Big-time career at USF and lengthy and productive NBA tenure as well.

More Riordan trivia (as though it were needed at this point in the conversation): Mike Carson, one of the school's (and SF State's) great guards in the 1950s, is the father of Serra's interim head coach, Brian Carson, and Menlo-Atherton's assistant coach, Craig Carson; and Mike C. is the grandfather of M-A's outstanding guard, J.D. Carson. Yes, it's a Carson-palooza down on the glorious Peninsula.

All this talk of giving backpacks and sweatshirts would be a violation of NCAA rules. Just throwing some humor into this.
Does anyone have any details what happened to Serra? Thought they would handle MA.

You should also tell the Freshmen coaching staff and JV staff as well since I bought them shirts as well with their names on them.

You are a good booster, but donating doesn’t give an excuse of extra voice at HS program. Or at least it used to not at Riordan, but maybe things have
change like a AAU style offense.

Since your credential are in that arena, you would know??

With ex-Riordan assistant Mike Molieri at the M-A helm, the Bears, the strongest CCS public school program by far, are similar to a WCAL unit in style, approach, preparation and execution.

That is a program that runs a defense based system with a adjustable offense based on talent.

As a true Riordan supporter for almost a generation, I like the direction the school, administration and Athletic Department leadership is headed and going.

As far as this years team, I worry that the 3P’s will empower this to no championship. But a lot if what could’ve , should’ve and would’ve been.

My bad, I didn’t know I was debating with the west coast version of Coach K.(LOL)

Honestly that resume wouldn’t get you a JC job....btw. I didn't see a degree or masters listed which says more than what the is posted. To educate and teach one has to earned or achieved knowledge themselves.

I wish your son success this year, it will be good to clear the deck for the Riordan program to move on and recapture the level of success legacy are made of....

Or just win something again...”Best team with no Championships”

I never graduated high school. I am an uneducated black man from the ghetto lucky to have my son attend such a prestigious school.
Executive Director and founder of Youth 1st , educating the Youth of San Francisco, employing people of the bay area.
Taught History and English at St. Emydius, Everett Middle School and Commodore Sloat.
I hold two degrees so does Bryce's mother. My credentials have nothing to do with the success of Riordan basketball, you don't wish my son or this team success. CQoach Forsuland sealed the deal. NUFF said. He got to state back to back years. BEATING a team that had two NBA players Aaron Affallo and Gabe Pruit and an NFL player. Darius Sanders....

The Isola years. THE Team school was loaded with players. A different San Francisco as well. and yes Riordan had a great schedule and they traveled to play. Chaminade in LA...All over. BUT they didnt seal the deal. LOSING several ways. BUT in 1990 they almost won state. LOSING TO mater dei...

The one thing the current coach did was schedule tough teams. WHICH was a good thing. THE Team played J Serra which is in D1 playoffs in LA. PLAYED gridley [cap Christian Dublin, campo].

He had a 32-team Crusader Classic one year bringing in teams from all over. He lost the Div1 State Championship by 2 points to a taller Mater Dei team, after Riordan lost their 6'9" center Reggie Johnson to grades/transfer in December. Got to respect that record.

Try again at 2:53am maybe you will come up with something good and get one person to like it but never try to assassinate my character since you are only a screen name with comments.

You stating things like you like the direction of the administration and staff? Your comments are clearly in support of them but my question is to you?...when did I say or comment about the administration and its direction. The more you comment the more you expose yourself. Nobody likes your posts, your directing your nonsense toward me which is great because I am game.
Keep hiding behind your screen name.

Don’t pour poor Black man with me, at least Huey Newton said, “he had a Street PhD” and you ain’t no Huey.

Since you didn’t graduate, let me give you a Civics update from Honest Abe Lincoln: “You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time”: WORD

You don't know me and honestly I don’t care to know you. But I will still be around Riordan long after your relatives try to influence UofH. I am not trying to character assassinate anyone. I am just calling out my truth which seems to be the truth.

As far as supporting Riordan, I was doing that when the HC was playing on Varsity and actually won a Championship...I think that was a State. I would like nothing better than to make that legacy come true x2. But reality is: He has more chance to do that next year after learning the lessons of this year....”No 3P’s” in the program”

SFcityFan is out.....(sound of mic dropping)

Unless Riordan continues its transfer/boarding magic big-time, the CIF title window is closing. This needs to be the year. Two Division I guards are graduating. Who knows what happens with the 7-1 stringbean center.

a degree doesnt really mean you can lead.. it just means you had the means and good time management. not that you can teach help defense or man, ball and rim.
