OK so some very knowledgeable fans on this board and tough competition in the weekly pick-ems over the years [of which I certainly was not one of the regular top finishers].
Anyone up to the challenge of picking the 20 winners of the first round? Or perhaps the division they are the most knowledgeable in? A daunting task for sure and some divisions seem clearly
easier to forecast than others. This is clearly & curious as to how many winners of the 20 games anyone can predict. Clearly the temptation is to preview CalPreps projections, but we all know this is the playoffs and there are usually a few upsets that take place and why they play the games after all.

I'll take a shot and start with Div I winners: Los Gatos, Serra, Salinas, SF. - Div II Wilcox, Palma, HMB, San Benito, Div III SHC, Mt View, Christopher, Leland, Div IV SHP, Hillsdale, Pioneer, Homestead,
Div V Soquel, Cupertino, North Salinas, Aragon

While most of these look like easy picks I'll be anxious to see all the final scores.

Why is Bellarmine not hosting?
Was moved from SJCC to Willow Glen and then moved to Los Gatos home field which makes the Bells "Visitors" instead of hosting the game. San Jose City College was requiring proof of Covid-19 vaccination by all players and CCS officials made the decision to move the game elsewhere - which begs the question "how did the Bells play their other home games there? Obvious answer would be some Los Gatos players may not vaccinated [?] - not sure if anyone else knows more...

Seems this would be a def advantage for Los Gatos to have game moved to their home turf & crowd.

I don’t know how Bellarmine accepted that. Should have at least explored a private venue like Mitty.

Bells are still home team. LG will take the visitors side of the field. That is probably why they accepted playing there.

NorCal - you're pickin' S.I. over Palma?? Say it isn't so.....
or are you simply baiting other fans not familiar with Palma? ;)

CCS Playoffs First Round "Shockers"

So what was the biggest “Shocker” of the first round in CCS playoffs?

For me it was how Aptos 8-1 and the No. 8 seed in Div. 1 hung with St. Francis for 3+ quarters. The Lancers had difficulty stopping Aptos offense who lined up quickly after each play and seemed to have more speed than the Lancer defense. In the end the SF run game with the 2 bruising Lancer RB’s wore down the undersized Aptos D. SF only passed 4 times and yet amassed 438 yards on the ground breaking a 29 year school record for rushing yards. Lancer RB JuJu Teu had 257 yards on 24 carries and Camilo Arquette had 101 yards on 12 carries with other RB’s gaining the rest of yards towards end of game. Aptos deserves a lot of credit for the effort they gave in this game & final score does not reflect the competitive nature of the game.

Who saw the Bells 7-3 upsetting Los Gatos 10-0? It took at 94 yard Pick-6 in the last minute by the Bells for a remarkable win and pushed them to the 2nd round. This was the same Los Gatos team that handled Wilcox by 41-18 – the same Wilcox that battled Pittsburg in a close loss 31-26. To me the Bells are the most confusing team in the CCS losing to SHC and then taking down Valley Christian and undefeated Los Gatos. How many in the Pick ‘ems got that right?

While I knew they were good I just did not see M-A taking down undefeated Salinas. Salinas had blown out Aptos 42-14 in regular season while M-A had lost to the Bells by 15 points in the season opener. After those 2 early season losses M-A has been on a roll and will be tough to stop.

Upsets today? The Serra vs VC could be a trap-game for the Padres and the rematch I think is difficult to predict. First game Padres were up 21-0 in first ½ in what looked to be a blow-out. Serra came out flat in 2nd ½ and hung on for a 28-21 win. Will Serra bounce back after the trouncing last week by St. Francis or is the air out of the balloon for the Padres without Mahasin?

Good rundown, @Rmbr26

I would add San Benito's close win over Burlingame. Some tough draws, but the Gabilan division went 2-3 in the first round

The Aptos st. Francis game was surprising.

I picked Bellarmine simply because I thought that their strength of schedule gave them a little bit more preparation than Los Gatos. But to me it seemed like it would be wash - either team could have won and that was demonstrated throughout the game.

The VC Serra game well likely go in Serra's favor. If Serra is not prepared and VC really focuses in on their best play there might be an upset but I doubt it. I think the last game show that Serra significantly backed off in the second half and I don't give much credit to the second half of that game as an outcome of this playoff game.

Panthers were in control for much of the contest. Credit to the Balers for refusing to capitulate. BHS failing to score at all in OT was the final nail in a bitter 31-28 loss. Details on reasons are lacking right now. Very tough L for BHS which had two TDs called back. Three weeks ago, they lost to HMB in OT, 42-41. Ouch. Double-ouch.

Shout out to the City WCAL schools SI and SHC for their first round wins. Shame Riordan wasn't eligible b/c of the max teams rule for each league. With all the talk of the demise of SF WCAL football. appears the SF Holy Trinity would have fared well in Sections as they were competitive, for the most part, in league this season.
