When the CIF announces that sports will be pushed to January what will the criteria be to actually play? Come January we play regardless? Only if cases decrease to xxx%? Only if there’s a vaccine? Only if the vaccine is readily available to everyone? How do you see this playing out?

Yes, 2021 would be the hopeful answer. But far from a guarantee at this juncture. It is not out of the question that we could face an entire school year without competitive sports that require lots of contact (football, basketball, soccer, water polo, wrestling, etc.).

That is a key component to the July 20 announcement. There needs to be a metric schools are looking at to determine safety or not. Without a metric, it stays an ambiguous discussion

And now a report today that two studies have shown that COVID antibodies may last only 6 months in the majority of COIVD-inflicted patients. Not only does that mean a vaccine (if one is found) may have to be given every six months but it also means that if you get COVID once then you are not immune from getting it again. So much for herd immunity.

Ultimately I think/fear that we are all going to get tired of COIVD and just go on living our lives. Maybe with masks but everyone is likely to get real tired of them and social distancing. Hopeful that if we get sick it is only a mild case. Not a death sentence. Nor some of the awful long term effects they are seeing in some/may recovered patients.

For now, I expect that July 20 will bring a statewide ban on high school sports for the Fall. Don't think much will change by Winter. If football is going to be played this year, I think we will all have to wait for Spring. And then find that a number of the football players will opt for Spring basketball or Spring baseball.

Time will tell.

i see no team sports in the fall or winter. I remain hopeful they will allow tennis, golf and cross country dual/tri meets. but as it is now, there is no metric that will allow for team sports to resume. This virus has gotten out of control the last month. Cases have skyrocketed, and we are starting to see the deaths and hospitalizations following behind.

I will be pleasantly surprised if we are playing spring team sports, but remain pessimistic. I think CIF will just keep kicking the can down the road in hopes of changed guidance that will allow for sports. Maybe we can get our s#$t together in the next 5 months and we can get the numbers down, like they are in most of the world. Also, they will want to see how the schools handle the crowds that come with returning to campus. If we start to see campus related outbreaks, that will be bad for the future of sports.

Governor just shut down things again... interesting he hasnt mentioned high school football. maybe yall need to send him a note

The CTA is lobbying the governor to keep public schools shut down in the fall.
That is what our local teachers union is pushing for as well. I am sure CTA is hearing from all the local unions with the same message. With the school districts in LA, San Diego, and San Joaquin all announcing remote learning for the fall I am sure many more will follow suit.

Also the case with the Oakland Diocese teachers (non CTA).

The misinformation (and misinterpretation) regarding prep sports in California continues to flourish. When the Orange County Board of Education declared its decision to promote mask-less, in-person studies in the fall, there was optimism and hope in some quarters. One problem: That esteemed body has no authority whatsoever over the operations of the 27 individual pubic school districts in the O.C. Each of them is a separate entity with its own trustees, administrators, unions, etc. Each will go its own way in the fall.

This might sound real bad and insensitive (Particularly since I have no kids playing high schools sports) but most of us really only want to see HS football and basketball so would we really care if Football was played in January? It would definitely hurt football/basketball duo athletes as their seasons would run together. But I dont know if many people (short of the athletes and parents) would miss tennis or badminton season.Again purely from a fan's or my perspective.I would rather have a football season and that's ONLY if it's safe to do so.

You can only play Football for your high school. There is no travel football, no club football for high school students. High School is the only option in football. Baseball, basketball ,soccer, softball , water polo , swimming , tennis , golf ect. get more college exposure and participate more for their club/travel team than their high school team. For this reason I think giving High School Football some precedence as far as changing seasons and scheduling makes a lot of sense.
