December 7 Score Thread

Eureka turns the ball over on downs at the M-A 20 with 1:15 left. Barring a fumble, it'll be a 27-20 final in favor of M-A.

Dawson Hurst with an interception to seal Del Oro's 14-13 win over St. Francis.

Del Oro back to the state bowl games. St. Francis ends season with a pair of one point losses

As expected, Eureka played nobody this season. A 12-0 paper tiger with a sad ass coin flip to get another week. CN would have throttled that MA team. NCS leadership is a joke.

Folsom beats Central 84-46.

That is a lot of points. Even more impressive with their slow start

Way to go Folsom! I’m sure your Sac Juaquin Section leadership is far better than the NCS. We suck at improvising as we were the only Section to not figure out a place to play and stay on track. Fire them all.

That is a unprovable statement and you know it. Sounds more like anger on the situation vs. what might have happened in hypothetical match up with CN and MA.

I do agree though that NCS could have handled this situation better and I feel sorry for CN since they never got the chance to play it out on the field

I also feel sorry for CN - however, I like the gutsy move to have a shot at a state title. I would like to think I would have made the same decision in Cronin's shoes. Mostly, I'm just dismayed at the poor management of playoffs by the NCS leadership. There were very unfortunate circumstances to deal with but everyone has to make good decisions both in good and bad times. The NCS commissioner funked that test.

Eureka is a small town public school that puts together a competitive schedule, travels willingly and without complaint, and maximizes what is usually a limited talent base. No D-I guys most of the time, but every few years it may have a Rey Maualuga or Soma Vainuku come through (and thenit wins a section title, unsurprisingly).

Cardinal Newman got what it wanted, which was a coin toss. It probably wanted that in part because it also knew it was the best team in the section at the D-III level whether it actually proved it on the field or not. we'll never know what would've happened in a CN-Eureka matchup this weekend.

Truth be told, Eureka had every chance to win last night against a team loaded with talent. The Loggers were let down by some really questionable playcalling and its own mistakes (it went offsides ~10 times and lost a fumble at its own 20, though the latter was reciprocated by M-A after halftime). There were two Eureka drives that ended on downs that I took great issue with due to play selection when they had been running the ball right at M-A and succeeding. And then there was the fact that when Eureka took an early lead and later tied it at 20 in the fourth quarter M-A immediately answered by giving the ball to Franklin behind the LOS and letting him race to sideline for a 70-yard TD.

Anyway, CN folks can cling to their belief in their tough schedule and quality. They would've been favored against EHS, but actually beating them was far from a given. Paper tigers? Ignoring the fact Eureka plays some schools like Shasta every year and it makes an effort to schedule similar programs like Livermore, Ukiah and Scotts Valley (and so on including better teams than thosr) that didn't have their best teams this season, Eureka still played just one non-playoff team. Its three league foes all made a dent in the D-IV playoffs (two played each other in the semis, one is a reigning state champ playing for the section title tonight who CN also scheduled). It matched CN's performance against like opponents. And last I checked CN played the likes of Galena, Maria Carrillo, Analy and Windsor, each of which sucked. Your "paper tiger" wanted to play CN for a section title while CN wanted to be gifted a spot via seeding or a coin flip because of previous accomplishments and a "good" loss. It's the latter that screams paper tiger to me.
