Del Oro vs Liberty(Bakersfield)

Del Oro will be playing in its third state title game next week

3rd time is a charm for Del Oro. Let's go DO!!!

That would be awesome if they could pull it off after losing 6 games this year, but I know it will be a very tough game for them

First off, congrats to Del Oro. I wasn't confident that they'd win tonight, but, as usual, they fought the good fight, hung around and got the 'W'. I'm sure smashmouthrick isn't hating the long drive home from Bakersfield.

I'm still not over the Golden Eagles ending my Thunders season so abruptly, but I'll be rooting for them next week against a very, very good opponent.

And, again, this win further proves everything I've been saying about their aggressive scheduling. It simply builds and hardens that team. If other top area programs don't recognize and start mirroring what they have been doing, they're lost. Taking a few extra losses is well worth it when the end result is consistently winning section titles, regional games and making SBG appearances. And when you do have a special team, nobody can question it because you will have proved it against a top flight schedule.

Del Oro may have 6 losses but they are playing the same game Bellarmine is next week. That's the all-important thing.

Thanks TR!

About 1/2 way home and loving the drive ;-)

LOL. Nice to hear, buddy!

We should get together for the State game. Unless the weather is horrific, I plan to be out at Sac. State rooting you guys on. Just don't expect me to wear that awful black and gold -- it's not in my color wheel and I won't do it.

I found full game highlights. Check out Mason Hurst's catch at the 1:30 mark.

Just from the highlights, it looks as if Stone Smartt had another good game. He's shown a lot of improvement over the season and is only a JR.

Sounds like a plan TR! DO is going to need every bit of fan mojo to be infused into Golden Eagle blood.

Congrats to DO. Looks like it was an amazing game.
To go on the road and win is a great accomplishment. Coach T looked very satisfied at the end. The whole program does it right and it is easy to root for them.

Time to beat Camarillo

Congrats to DO on a solid victory last night on the road at that! First time watching DO was in 2004 and I was very impressed with their program. Don't know you "smashmouthrick" but you seem to be a very passionate fan of DO and I also congratulate you. You are a blessing to this board by giving us the details of the games we cannot see. I thank you for that my friend. Good luck against Camarillo and win, lose or draw you guys are still a championship program in my eye.

That was a great high school football game. Hopefully third time's the charm for Coach T in CIF state bowl games. Next man up played into the victory with TB/CB Gee hurt, and REC/CB Udoffia limited to defensive snaps. Cam Davis and Dom Pericin are both really playing v. well. The team will need to be healthier and hopefully that will be the case with a week to heal and get ready. I have a freshman son and an older son who played two years ago in the SBG loss to the Drillers of Bakersfield. Something that's gone largely unnoticed outside of the school program is that this season the Varsity staff took over the coaching of all 3 DO teams all season long, it's a big staff and they have done an incredible job with all 3 teams. Results were as you might expect, frosh won SFL and went 9-0-1 and the class is loaded. JV had 4 frosh playing up and were a 1 loss team and shared SFL with Granite Bay . I expect Del Oro to be playing in December for the next few years. Much shorter drive this week! Go D.O.!

This was an incredible game on both sides! DO never gave in, a testament to their culture. DelOroFB_Dad sounds like you may have seen a few of these games in your time! Didn't know their staff was coaching all levels and with such success - goes to show you why they get better throughout the season and don't plateau - the entire team has improved game to game which doesn't happen in many programs and that is largely due to the quality coaches they have over at DO - congrats to them for getting to State!

Were the Liberty fans pretty surprised in what they saw of Del Oro?

God bless.

RP45, I was not at the game due to a work assignmt out of state, i followed it on a local prep twitter feed that had practically every snap. My guess is yes they were surprised, D.O.'s not big and not fast, other than Udoffia. I think the Pat's fans got a big dose of D.O.heart that come out in the 2nd half. Keys seemed to be 3rd qtr where Del Oro's offense got going (West Coast pass and zone run game). The big INT by Udoffia, and Smartt's QB play was superb after his 1st series pick. Receivers Burrage and Hurst were also key in the win.

Good stuff! I was really pulling for DO in this one. Congrats!

Some credit has to go to QB Smartt. When he took that roughing the passer shot from #44 he was clearly in pain and his dad ran down to the sideline from the stands upset at the cheap shot that he took. I think this either happen on the second to last or the last series. There was a ton of pressure on Smartt to score with 2+min left from deep in DO territory. This was DO's season on the line, score or season ends. He really kept his cool on that last drive where on a couple situations it was 3rd and long and he kept his head in the game and had the best offensive series of the game connecting on some key passes, using his legs and punching in the final score on a keeper. This kid has grown a lot since the beginning of the season and is just a junior.

Agree with TR that Hurst is underrated. Two key players returning next year with a very good JV class coming up.

DelOroFB_Dad said it well Liberty "got a big dose of DO heart". In fact in a post game interview Liberty's #5 Hubbel commented "most teams caved after we were up two scores but DO never gave up". You could hear a pin drop in the Liberty stands on DO's final drive as they were likely thinking "uh oh what is going on".

DO kept their composure after the first play of the game where DO threw that pic deep in DO territory that Liberty scored on in a play or two.

I thought DO did a great job limiting Liberty's RB Jounti & their QB from doing major damage. At first I questioned the 3-3 defense DO was in most of the night but saw the wisdom of CT with this alignment with tight zone coverage keeping the OLB's in space containing RB/QB from break away runs. Their QB had some good time to scramble & throw but good zone coverage kept the QB from long runs and from DB's getting burned. DO DB's wiffed on a couple pass plays but the 3-3 worked which has to be attributed to great coaching.

DO is blessed with great coaching. Coaches do their homework and it shows. DO is never loaded with D1 athletes in fact they usually do not even have a single D1 athlete on their team year in and year out. You have attribute a good part of DO's success to coaching.

DO is on fire and has gotten better with each playoff game. Let's hope they continue an upward trajectory into the big game this Friday. Incredible year for DO. Around the beginning of the playoffs I stated that DO had under achieved this year but something started to click in the game with DLS and they never looked back from there.

Some great competition in Camarillo but I like DO's chances.

Go DO!!

Mason Hurst is a very underrated player -- and only a JR.

Agreed. I think by the time he's done at Del Oro, he'll have a D1 opport somewhere. Big bro Logan is at UW Huskies and redshirted as a TB; he QB'd DO in '14. Best may be yet to come, with younger bro Hurst who is a dynamic big and fast frosh tailback.

RP45 - Liberty fans were a good bunch, place was packed. Stadium was cookie cutter and boring, but their fans never got nasty - although they fell very silent when Smartt punched it into the end zone on the last drive.

Smartt is a heck of a quarterback, he can throw and run well, and he also caught a long pass off a reverse! He is gonna be a good one next year.

As SMR says, Coach Taylor's defense held Liberty in check in the 2nd half. They did give up a couple of first half TDs on pass cover issues, but forced a number of punts that gave the DO offense good field position. Their defensive backs were all over the Liberty receivers most of the game. The offense made great halftime adjustments that gave Liberty fits. Camron Davis ran well as their line took control in the run game and gave Smartt a lot of protection in the pass game - which was key on the last drive when Smarrt completed pass after pass to move the team down the field..

Hoping DO represents the SFL and NorCal well on friday - gonna be a good one to see!
