Final St. Francis 13 vs Del Oro 14 - D2 Norcal Regional Championship

Just got home. Might be the best game I've seen in years. The physicality of St Francis was impressive. I thought they would wear down DO. That turnover and missed FG did them in, but it was the will of DO! DO found passing game and Guzman is a stud. Not sure if they played 5 times St Francis wouldn't win all but 1 but it was only tonight that mattered. Great HS game!

I've undersold this DO team all season. Having to play Folsom probably didn't help as they make all teams not named DLS look pretty average or worse than they really are. But they just beat a darn good SF team, who was a defending State Champ.

Even though SF probably isn't as good as they were last season (I'm guessing that CCS guys would say that), SF is still top notch. Their game last week against Valley Christian could have gone either way. They were among the best of the WCAL, which is 1 of the 3 best leagues in NorCal. Far from chopped liver.

SF very physical. They play the style of ball I like with the physical ground game. #11 is not fast but boy was he hard to bring down. Very well coached and disciplined team. Congrats SF for a great run!

Congrats to DO’s seniors who get to play one more time!

For us SJS guys, what a banner year it's been for this section in football. If Capital Christian somehow beats Wilcox tomorrow night, a team from all 7 SJS playoff divisions will be represented at State. Having 6 is already incredible.

Denair already won State and Colfax is waiting on BYE due to their NCS opponent playing for section. And tonight Del Oro, Folsom, Hilmar, and Rio Linda all advanced.

I realize that the current playoff system is watered down, but still .....

I know injuries are part of the game and St. Francis would never use it as an excuse, but the Lancers represented very well as they lost their best RB to transfer (2017 WCAL POY) and his replacement to injury. SF's starting qb was also out since mid-season with a season-ending knee injury. Great season Lancers and congrats to Del Oro. Get State!

Boy, that was as physical a football game as you would likely see anywhere all year. SF is big, big, big...everywhere. 300 # lineman, a 235 # rb, and a 6' 5 ish QB, who can run pretty good and was thick. Big TE too. Wow. Where do you get those kids? All respect to SF......more DO magic.

I was a bit surprised SF's QB threw that last pass up for grabs. Thought he'd play it more conservative and play for the FG.
I thought that too but I believe that was the play where the snap got away away from the QB and I think he panicked.

I always say, it's not an excuse but a reason why something happened the way that it did.

Losing key players is always going to impact the outcome of a game. No matter what team(s) somebody roots for, everyone has been on that side of the fence wondering what might have been.

To this day, I still believe Rocklin would have beaten Servite in 2009 if not for losing their starting QB and having to replace him with one of their starting WR's. That's a huge swing.

And of course Central Catholic lost their starting QB last week while still leading in the 3rd Q.

We never know how these things might have played out differently. We can only guess.

SF left it all out on the field and if not for a missed FG off the upright probably wins the game.

Yeah, I think he tried to make a play when he didn't have to. He could have easily threw the ball away. But he must have thought he saw someone breaking open at the last moment and instinctively went for it.

Tongue-in-cheek question to all the Del Oro guys --- how many of their 9 lives do the Golden Eagles have left?

Do they have enough DO magic for one more miracle win?

1 more TR!

When Jarrat connected with Smart on that near TD, that one with the sideline penalty on it, I knew the kids still had the fight in them, even though they didn’t score.

Should be a fun trip down I5 for one last game.

Another come from behind win and more DO magic!

SF is a really good team. Exceptional defense.

Me too. I guess it is HS football but he had time to throw the ball out of bounds and stop the clock.

Was looking over Grace Brethren Lancers on MP and film, man are they huge up front, wow! They won their Regional Bowl on 11/30, they'll be rested and ready. Cerritos College venue not far for the GB Lancers to travel. That was a very physical SF game, so D.O. will have to heal up and have all hands on deck. Get the game plan in on a short week, hitch up the wagons Thursday travel, & go compete like hell next Friday night. I like our chances, D.O. has their mojo and momentum working. Offense looked much better tonite. Coach Parry's defense should keep it close. D.O. hasn't had their special teams return game going lately; next week I expect that to change back to early and mid-season form. BTW, 'congrats to the SFL's Folsom for their 84-46 win over Central. #SFLDominates.

And DO remains undefeated in NorCal Regional games.

But not quite as good in the SBG's. They need to step it up and improve that record this next weekend.

They've also had good success against the WCAL in recent years. 3-1 against Serra, Bellarmine and St. Francis since 2013. The 1 loss to Bellarmine took a Troy Martig heroic effort in the final minute navigating several 4th down landmines to complete. Gave DO a dose of their own medicine. ;)

First, hats off to the Lancers for a great game/season. I sat on their sidelines and really quality fans/people. Absolute class program. No taunting garbage yesterday by either team. Just old school hard mouth football. I told somebody I was sitting next too in the first half I think first one to 14 wins. It was one one of those games. #7 Pakalo going to Stanford is a beast. He's going to be a good one.

I think the play that hurt SF most was kicking a FG right before half when it was 4th and 2 I want to say on the DO 10. You could have buried DO 10-0 at half and SF got ball back after half. They couldn't stop #11 all night. SF super conservative and old fashion. Nothing like I've seen up in the SJS.

People forget too how good SF kicker is. (LEAHY) Even though he missed a FG he was 2-3 and you could see the leg on him. They were getting close to his range. That Pick was huge.

Smartt was incredible as usual. Anybody looking at him? He has great size and speed? Gotta be a UCD type player?

My assessment was DO wins and lives another day but best 2 out of 3 and SF is the better team. They just grind on you.

Best game I've seen in years.

LL did you notice that the kid was kicking from the ground...Very few HS kickers do that.....most are on a block.....did it cost them???

WWHS44- You have good eyes! I didn't notice that. No real wind yesterday just very cold. Ball had to feel like a lead weight. Did you see how well he punted? Holy cow. They really respected DO special teams. He had some booming pumps. You don't often see a college type kicker.

DO made some good adj after halftime. They got there receivers open in space a few times. I thought that was a key. Must be super frustrating playing SF. They could beat you 14-0 and absolutely dominate the game and the ball. That is old fashion smash mouth football.

Yup....Ground and pound game...Tremendous punter to allow a field position game.....game plan works.......I really felt they missed a shot when trading the TE...Sometimes it was the TE and other times it was the OT (50) bouncing over....This left the TE at the weak tackle slot and DO rolled coverage over leaving the TE to go in route and would have been wide open.I dont think DO saw who was bouncing over.....I thought they were setting that up for use at some point but never went there....shows what I know....

Agree with RR. And I’m not saying this blindly as a DO fan. I would characterize this DO team as one of the scrappiest teams they have fielded. It is heart, never give up, scrappy play and some talent they are taking to state. Heck yeah they have one more!

I was watching film on this game earlier today, as I usually do cause I see more on film than live. After all the discussion of how lucky or not DO was against CC last weekend when the fumble caused by #3’s strip that bounced into #5’s hands for the TD was clearly not luck at all.....guess who caused the huge fumble deep in DO territory that essentially saved the game and prevented SF from scoring what might have put the game out of reach?

Yep, it was #3 again. Go figure. He’s done it all year.

Completely agree. You cant expect the best player on your team to be on the sideline and not have an impact on the game. Laughrea passed for 2600yards in one of the best leagues in the section. Laughrea plays Rocklin wins. Score was 33-30. A player like Laughrea had the skills and leadership to overcome 3points.
