Former grizzly Cameron Smith going wild against Utah. 2 picks one for a TD in the first half. Will be the first ever to lead a USC in tackles as a freshman.

Been impressed with him the past few weeks, kid has stepped right in.

NorCal has sent some decent LB's down to Troy over the years, Del Rio (Hayward) Jeff Kopp (SRV), Maualuga) Eureka and now Smith.

I remember one of the announcers saying, a few weeks ago, after a pass was thrown towards him that hit his hands and dropped, "that's why he playing on defense and not on offense". But the reason he dropped it was that he was shielded by another player and didn't see the pass until it was too late. And I said to myself, obviously this idiot never saw him play high school football. He had lots of interceptions, many for TD's. I bet by the time his junior season comes, he could leave early for the NFL if he so chooses. He is a stud.

Announcers did get it right when they said he is the first true freshmen since Ricky Ellison (78') to start at ILB for Troy .... Pretty impressive considering the number of all-American's/NFL's that have played that position over the last 37 years

He's got an NFL man's body already. Hard to teach 6"3 240 with that sort of speed and strength.

Amazing story for this guy. He jumped over the DLS kid on the depth chart in preseason, and then got the job when injuries opened up the starting spot. I'm most impressed with his football instincts. There are other more impressive USC linebackers (faster, stronger) but he has a superior instinct for the ball. Very impressive for a frosh.

When he had nearly 200 tackles as a soph for GB's state title team you knew he was going to be the real deal. He looked like a man with a Viking beard at 15, I thought he might out grow being a LB and end up at DE. Size, Speed, Specimen!

Saw him play Rocklin as a Junior - one could tell he was gonna be something at the college level - and he was huge for a high school LB.

From what I recall, he had a nice game against POLY in the 2012 D1 State game. He might end up being the next GB Grizzly to reach the NFL.

I think this story really shines a light on what kind of a competitor Cameron Smith is:

He picked up a lot of big offers early, so he didn't need exposure. He wasn't a natural playing in space, so the 7-on-7 scene didn't highlight in strengths. However, he continued to play in these high profile events because he wanted to get better and compete against other top athletes.

I didn't think he would make an impact this early, but the foundation was always there for him to be very good. Congrats to him for early success.

Saw Cameron in a 7on7 event (that included 1on1s) last year and agree with Streak, he didn't look his best in space against rangy WRs. He is now showing what he can do in the real game of 11on11, good for him!
