I was reading the horrible news this morning where a man had committed suicide by jumping off the Bay Bridge after his wife's body was found in the marshlands near the Dumbarton Bridge. Then I read that a neighbor said he had been a basketball coach and that his sons were basketball stars and it hit me. I remember a couple of years ago he was on NCP asking for advice on the recruitment and college choices of his son, who is now playing basketball at LaVerne. It is a sad time for the sons, having lost both their parents in the last 2 weeks.

Very sad story. This serves as a reminder to me that most of us on this board have families of our own and are dealing with the ups and downs that come with marriage, careers, child rearing, taking care of aging parents, etc as well as our own individual triumphs and pitfalls.

Please let us remember what is truly important in life. Sports, however passionate and opinionated we are about them, are only a tool to help prepare for the all important game of life. Our participation in sports, and our discourse/discussion about sports should reflect an awareness of where the stakes are truly most high.

My prayers are with the boys and anyone connected to them. I believe they will have the necessary intestinal fortitude to help one another through this. It's what their parents instilled in them, and I remember it is what they exhibited on the hardwood. This is where character counts, and I pray they come through the fire like forged steel!

That is awful. You just hope those kids have a good foundation formed. What a horrible story.

Paul Jr. played his senior year (2011-2012) at Burlingame. Started some games, but was really misused. Players and coaches did not work together at all. It was just a mess of a season.

Both parents were at every game. Paul Sr. yelled out "go to work Paul" every time and I really mean every time Paul got the ball. For the past four years I've used that line hundreds of times. I won't be using it anymore.
