Mission JV’s Scrimmaged SHC’s JV & 2 Freshman Teams already beginning at 8:30am.

The Varsity Game to begin at 10am.

Mission has their full team today.

Should be an exciting game, as both teams have SF Rebel AAU players who’ve been playing with each other since they were 9-10 years old.

Great atmosphere, especially for a Scrimmage, at Sacred Heart and in November. I’m hearing next year it will be a real game in December.

That would be nice. Barbour never wanted to schedule them. Probably had more to do with SH rarely playing preseason games at home (i.e. cheap). Hard to really gage after scrimmage, but SHC looks built more for AAU than WCAL. Plenty of 1-2-3s but no 4s and 5s with impact. No game in the paint. Irish fans will have to be patient and hope for multiple hot shooters. They did have two guards that were not afraid to drive and had success. However Mission had advantage in paint and very efficient in making extra pass in paint. Irish played pretty even for first two quarters but Mission's relentless running exposed Irish with little depth after initially running with Bears. Much like SI/Mission game last year, the constant pressure D eventually exhausted Irish. Yes 3 Mission football players did play but definitely had football, not basketball legs. I did notice that one of primary players for Irish was nursing an ankle sprain (more precautionary). As scrimmages go very beneficial for both teams. Great to hear both are considering a non league game next year.

I would hope it was a good atmosphere...Otis, Pratt and others (older brothers) were SHC kids...but the younger kids go to Mission...lots of rivalry and things to compare and talk about. As soon as Irish find there middle man tall or wide...I think the guards can give it the 1983 special with Kevin Gogan who just clogged the middle.

Those kids out there yesterday, many of them have played with each other since they were really young. It was a nice atmosphere and towards the end, the score meant nothing, but these young city kids coming together along with their parents being together meant everything. Please note, even in scrimmages, professional referee’s are really appropriate to prevent possible injuries and extended play on the court. Would love to see a healthy SHC versus Mission real game, the game would draw a nice crowd.

m4success, who for the Irish was out?

Scott2138,
Emmett Neal suffered a high left ankle sprain as he drove to the basket with a Mission defender on his left side. This occurred in the beginning of 2nd Q of the 4 Quarter Scrimmage. I hope he doesn’t try to rush back. He is a major part of the SHC Team and he needs to be 100% on the floor. Amin Olgesby didn’t play but was present. He will also be a key player as well.

You are so right there are definitely SHC/Mission Family ties going on. You gotta love it!! Too bad the AAA and WCAL couldn’t merge...... Total wishful thinking!!

Not to mention Coach Arnold is a SHC graduate...:) I would have liked Arnold to apply for the SHC head basketball job in 2016, that was wishful thinking too. I don't think the thought of coaching would be impossible but seeing that SHC has two athletic directors already would have cause him a demotion .

Mission High is so blessed to have Arnold Zelaya. What makes him so effective is the fact that he is the Dean of Students/Head Counselor, Athletic Director and the Boy's Varsity Basketball Coach AND has the Full support of the Principal. He said he wanted to attend Mission, as he grew up in the Mission District of SF, but his parents wouldn't let him go so he went to Sacred Heart instead. The guy Coach Z is amazing. If the Kids get into trouble at Mission, guess who they have to go to, you know the rest.........

There is also a baseball tie. Joe Cronin played at Mission in 1922 and at Sacred Heart in 1924. In the 1924 SFAL championship game, he came off the bench in the 10th inning since he was nursing an ankle injury at the time and hit an RBI to start a 5-run rally. SI scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 10th. Irish won 5-3. Games were 9 innings then. All the scoring was done in the 10th.

Yes, true. The MLB Hall of Famer led Mission to league championship in 22 (also tennis, ha). Mission burnt down that summer, transferred to SH final two years of high school. Not sure he played tennis at SH.

Back to basketball..Yes, if would have been interesting to see what Zelaya could have gotten out of the kids that attended SHC. Dont get me wrong, the kids at Mission have bought in and play tenacious defense, and multiple offensive sets. You dont run on both sides, you dont make the team. Hypothetically, would have been interesting to see what Zelaya got out of SHC big men, where post play has been suspect for past five years.

Also would he have had free reign to discipline kids (with principals approval) as he does now, as opposed to answering to SHC's AD's and their parent group. Unlikely.
