NorCal Bowl Game Thread - Saturday

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the CCS playoff format is ridiculous when you consider that teams will advance to state playoffs. Los Gatos was, at best, the 8th best team in the section (btw, I left the LG-Milpitas game at halftime because it was so lopsided). Not that anyone is asking me, but I would identify the top 30 teams in the section and then have five 6-team divisions (top 2 seeds get 1st round byes) based on enrollment.

That happens in most sections. i.e. CVC lost to all 5 NCS D1 teams they faced this year, then ran the table with smaller schools and cane up big against a tough SJS team to make state. CVC came in last place in the EVAL Mountain, and lost to Liberty, but only DLS in D1 advances. Lots of very good SJS teams got left out of the regionals as well.

That’s the way it goes. The very top team that won the top level at sections advance (DLS, Serra, Oak Ridge), but after that you’ve got anywhere from the 4th to 8th best teams advancing. Same in SoCal.

Maybe I am mistaken. I was under the impression that most of the sections still had some enrollment component when setting their divisions. CCS has zero enrollment component (that’s how Half Moon Bay (1000 +/- kids) ended up in D1 and Milpitas (3000+/-) in D5.

Sound egregious for sure - and this speaks clearly for the need for an uniform method of classifying all teams throughout CA. In the case of CCS, they are most clearly aligned with the present CIF Bowl classification method. But surely there is a better system for all of CIF...

Some people are adamantly opposed to the parity system according to strength. The more traditional system is PARITY by enrollment. But that system has always proven to have more problems than our current system.

No matter how hard the the CIF Federated Council works on finding the best system, there will always be vocal dissenters.

I think creating a system based on enrollment is a bad idea. Enrollment is not the way to create the best system for the sport of football. I like how it is now.

A lot of talk about the NCS being down all year and a lot of their teams being overrated. After watching Los Gatos vs CN game, I'm not sure how Wilcox was scoreless after the first and up only 16-0 at the half. There was really nothing LG could do on either offense or defense. That could have been a 70-0 game for the number 1 ranked D2 team in CCS. I took a lot of what CCS followers said at face value, but the NCS going undefeated in NorCal bowl games reinforces the predominant thinking in these parts that NCS was undervalued all year long

Apples and Oranges comparison. If the NCS followed the CCS playoff system, CN would have been in D1 and had to get through DLS to make the bowl game. CCS takes the top 8 ranked teams and places them into a D1 group. The 9th-17th teams are D2, 18th-25th are D3, etc. CN just squashed the 9th place CCS team. Not sure you can compare NCS vs CCS based upon that.

Los Gatos is ranked 6th in CCS, CN 4th. Neither started that high when the playoffs started. It’s an accurate comp and I haven’t seen anything as bad as Milpitas placement in D5 from the NCS

I agree with you the enrollment has to play some part in the competitive equity system across the board in all sections. Even though some schools can go head-to-head with the first 11 but because of the student body they don't have the numbers to go that deep as other schools with the number of quality players, that's been the level of competitiveness and even injuries and safety can come into play. I know this McClymonds was bumped up four divisions and they only have 300 + students what now are in Division 2-A. I think the system can work but there does have to be some adjustments that has involve enrollment numbers with the competitive equity.

If Salinas didn't lose 5 starters to disciplinary reasons in playoffs and Palma didn't lose its two top skill players in the game before the semis I think either in my opinion were better than Los Gatos. Palma had a freshman in his first varsity game playing the second half after backup RB was injured and they almost pulled out the win. Not saying they would have defeated CN, but they were D2 and would probably be a much better game. Serra and VC in CCS probably better and Wilcox and Menlo Atherton and SI probably pretty good games.

Agree NorCal that both Salinas & Palma at full-strength would likely take down Los Gatos. Los Gatos was exposed vs Wilcox in the 37-0 shut-out and then in the sectional by CN 42-7. While Los Gatos has been a perennial strong program they just didn't have the "horses" to compete against the higher levels this season.
