Open Teams
1) Mitty
2) SMS
3 to 8 all are questionable

This year is going to be difficult selection to seed teams in the Open:

1) Does the committee seed head to head ?
2) How many teams from each section?
3) Which ranking should the committee use ?
4) There's to many more questions to ask ?

I think 3 teams from the CCS AND NCS.
Then 2 teams from SJS.

CCS
MITTY
SHC
PINEWOOD

NCS
BOD
SALESIAN
CN

SJS
SMS
The runner up in D1 SJS championship game.

The biggest question like I said how do seed these teams so they dont play the same division in the first round?

(Repeating reply in another thread ...)

It's hard to imagine the Division I champion not being moved up to the Open. There are eight slots, and Central Coast will send its two finalists from its own Open division. That leaves six spots, and the default for the new committee would simply be to take the section champions in Divisions I, II and III from the North Coast and Sac-Joaquin sections.

Whether they will do this, nobody knows. For example, it may be that both Bishop O'Dowd and Salesian, assuming they play in the NCS Division III final, deserve to be in the Open. And what about Cardinal Newman? And what about the Division I runner-up in the Sac-Joaquin Section?

This new committee will consist of representatives from all over the state, and must do all divisions plus the Open on a single day. Certainly the easy way out is to go with the administrative reality (as opposed to the real reality) that the champions of the larger divisions are automatically better than the champions of the lower divisions. Or they could drill down and really try to pick the best eight teams. We won't know until the meeting – and of course the placement of Clovis West is also going to be an issue.

Other than Mitty and SMS which one of the other 6 actually want to go to the open....
maybe CN...who else????

I would think Miramonte would be a logical as they will handily win NCS Div II.

I don't think anyone wants to go to the Open if they don't feel they have puncher's chance against Mitty -- and there's a reason Mitty is ranked in the top ten nationally.

You said it..... "if they don't think they have a puncher's chance" against Mitty, SMS, CW, or anyone else. What you believe can propel or set you back, no doubt. That" I don't think I have a chance" was the psychological edge SMS had for the past two seasons. I don't think any team to include Mitty, SMS, or CW have that same type of psychological edge.

But no doubt Mitty, CW, and SMS are playing at a higher level and have better talent than perhaps most of if not everyone else at this point. So they are rightfully ranked where they are for a purpose.

But that doesn't mean others can't and shouldn't get better. Or that they should give up long before they give themselves chance.

the one thing is....Its only ONE game and not best of 5 or 7.In a "best of" series the better team will win.
BUT in 1 game crazy stuff can and has happened...just look as recently as last season PW upsetting SMS.

I just wish the SJS and NCS would get on board with an OPEN section playoffs in both like the CCS does...
Have the top 2 finishers in each automatically go and let the committee pick 2 at large to fill out the bracket.

then at least the top 6 win/earn their way in...

it just seems so frign simple to me.

Two items:

No. 1. As noted in another posting, the CIF SoCal website indicates that Clovis West and the rest of the Central Section will play in the south in 2017. If that's incorrect, please let us all know.

No. 2. Let's be honest. In the NorCal Open Division final, Mitty and SMS are the heavy favorites to face one another. Everyone else, should probably lean strongly toward playing in the numbered divisions.

That list looks good, except I don't think Heritage has enough "quality" wins to get in. Their big wins are against Campolindo (D3) and Logan. Other than that, I'm not sure they have the schedule or the history (one requirement for CIF-right?) to get them in the open. If they had wins against any of the "open" teams, then I'd say maybe. Would it be okay to only take 4 teams?

by rule the most a section can send to the OPEN is 4 teams.
