Once again the match up zone caused confusion. Sequoia guards are very good in the top of that zone. Jackson makes them go from the defensive side of the ball. Not many teams can get open looks against that zone. If Coach Martinez is looking down, he must be proud!!

A well-executed matchup zone is a nightmare to play against. It's a great equalizer ...

Sequoia holds teams to about 31 points a game. Yes the zone equalizes things. They also play a very deliberate style on offense. They are not fun to play against. Coach Picchi, who took Burlingame High to a State Championship in 1988, has played the matchup for over 30 years.

The Cherokees are indeed a handful among the CCS publics. They don't have much depth but their starting five is very, very solid and savvy. Their style of play, which is the opposite of what's shown on the ESPN highlights each night, is also a problem for teams which haven't seen it before. As Coach Picchi put it in a December interview, "It's so old, it's new." He's right.
