Sac-Joaquin League Championship Predictions: Divisions 1 and 2

Lol. Tiny Placer is sometimes big time Placer playing D4. This yr may be lil ol/tiny Placer, but what about when they have 4 D1 OL, no body in the SJS had their OL about 5 years ago.
Yes I have asked Joey what they put in the water in Auburn! Yes that team that beat CC at home had Big Eddie. But that game was Michel Roberson that carried that game. Placer my 3rd favorite HS. I used to be an Inderkum. But they changed coaches! Not the same!

A healthy Downey would not finish 5th or 6. Come on. A good program that throws the ball vs teams that don't see that type of pass game on a regular basis. And don't say Kimball, they just had their 1st good win and has not been on Downeys level in the past. The VOL is awesome but not the SEC.
Thank you!

My old qb coach in hs and college is a Downey grad that played at UNR, we always talk Downey FB. Got a ton of respect for them and their coach. A program on the rise since Plaa has got there. All that said, the 209 is still Central Catholic, Oakdale, Manteca and St. Mary's till somebody knocks them off. Both Downey and Turlock are doing things the right way and will get their get shot in the playoffs, win big games in the playoffs and championships, then you can call yourself the top team. These teams need to getting to the semis or finals before we start calling them the best.
For the Downey fan,
Turlock won the JV game and returns the starting quarterback and running back next year. But actually, I'm addressing this posting. Maxpreps ratings are not infallible but are reasonably close. Here are the ending Section ratings for the last 4 years. I'll include the short spring "2020" season too.

2020: St. Marys 4, Manteca 9, Turlock 10, Oakdale 14, CC 24, Downey 54
2019: Turlock 9, Manteca 11, St. Marys 12, Oakdale 21, CC 28, Downey 31
2018: CC 4, St. Marys 8, Turlock 13, Downey 24, Manteca 28, Oakdale 37
2017: St. Marys 2, Manteca 6, Oakdale 7, CC 8, Turlock 26, Downey 33

Here's my observation: St. Marys has had the best run of it, but while Turlock is at least comparable to or better than the VOL three they have to play in D1 and while they have won some first round games they run into the Oak Ridges and Elk Groves in the second. The section's top large school teams are all in the north and the top medium and small schools are in the south. This year the D2 playoffs might be harder than D1 with Rocklin at the top. In D1 will anyone challenge Folsom? Maybe. So yes, Oakdale and Manteca get to the finals of D3 and D4 with lesser competition compared to what Turlock has to face. CC has had multiple state titles, and those were good teams and deserve their praise, but they didn't play in D1 sections. It's not a level playing field.

An additional piece of information in addition to Turlock’s JV beating Downey’s JV is that Downey’s freshman beat Turlock’s freshman.

I referenced the JV win because the freshman score was already mentioned. Didn't see either game but I believe the JV score was 35-7 Turlock. At any rate, varsity level results don't necessarily flow from the lower grades moving up as the varsity is a mix of two classes and many players from the lower levels don't continue on, although logically it would be assumed the best players are the ones who do move on. At any rate, over the last 5 years or so the Turlock JV team has also been very good, finishing the recent short spring season without giving up any points. At this point in time the only thing that counts is the current season and Downey is the team du jour.

Okay 4 th. Downey once beat CC at home. But that same CC lost yo tiny Placer. That year CC was down year. I am not saying Plaa is not a great coach! My son not a football player has much respect for him
My son was at Downey when it's program started to come back. Great offence. But they can't tackle. Look at how many points they give up. Just an honest point of view. VOL not SEC but still the toughest league in southern SJS.
Newsflash #2 Rocknrolus: The year Downey beat Central Catholic 45-42 was 2012. Yes, Central did lose to Placer in game #2, 48-30, but IT WAS NOT A DOWN YEAR FOR CC. They won a State Championship 66-7 over So Cal rep, Santa Fe Christian, and finished 14-2. So, stop blowing hot air. BTW, that year Downey finished 10-2, losing to Merced 45-41, and to Granite Bay (eventual state champions 21-20 over Long Beach Poly) 56-21.

Well, the original projections from CalPreps have taken a bit of a beating, but stayed pretty constant. The original post was from just over a month ago (then) and this is where we stand as of today (now). An asterisk* denotes that the team has locked up at least a league co-championship.

Division 1
Sierra Foothill: (then) Folsom; (now) Rocklin*
Delta: Jesuit
Tri-City: St. Mary's

Division 2
Capital Valley: (then) Woodcreek; (now) Antelope*
Metropolitan: Monterey Trail
Central California Athletic: (then) Downey/Turlock toss-up; (now) Downey
San Joaquin Athletic: Edison

Central Catholic, Vacaville, and Grace Davis will probably be in the Division 2 bracket as league champs from lower division leagues because of continued success/enrollment size.

Most coaches Ive spoken with have it different than maxpreps. I believe MP has been off on previous years as well. Specifically with which teams will qualify and in which division.

MT / Mustangs, keep up the yoman's work. If I get back into hs coaching you will be my go-to guy on everything SJS playoffs lol.

Yeah, MP has to be taken with a grain of salt.

Maxpreps has projected entries and seeds here for all 7 divisions:

They have Grace Davis in D3
Totally possible. They are a D2 school by enrollment, but they are the smallest, and so the first to be moved down. They play in a D4 league, so they would be eligible to play in D3 under the latest interpretation of the rules (according to @SacMaxPreps).

In reality, I usually only pay attention to D1. Since Monterey Trail is on the cusp this year, I have had to branch out. I often find myself missing those little subtleties. Thanks for pointing it out.

Vacaville and Central Catholic are locked in, though. They can't play below D2, and both are locks to make the playoffs at this point:

As a St. Mary’s (Stockton) fan, I would love the winning streak (since 2005) vs Lincoln (Stockton) to continue. Next weeks game at Lincoln is going to be epic. Wouldn’t be surprised if Lincoln is the favorite. But, since 2005, the few times Lincoln was supposed to win in many folks eyes, the Rams would not let it be. But, this streak has to come to an end sometime, maybe next week. Should the Rams lose, there are many of us Rams fans that would not mind dropping into D2 with an opportunity to avenge the loss to Central Catholic earlier this season, a game that St. Mary’s was without its starting QB (Cruz Herrera) and aerial game was quite limited. Cruz was knocked out during the DLS game after the Rams were down by 1 pt at halftime. DLS went on to score 35-0 in the second half and win 52-16. Would love to see the Rams and Raiders go at it with Cruz behind center. But, something tells me that St Mary’s is going to take care of business vs Lincoln on Friday @ Lincoln and the streak continues. We’ll see. Nevertheless, the Rams with Cruz behind center is a different team and will be a force in the playoffs, whether it’s D1 or D2. GO RAMS!!!

Well I was at both games! I stand by my statement. Yes CC played in state bowl game. SMALL school. But the teams following that year were stronger. I don't know if you watched those games? The difference that year with Downey they actually had people on defence that could tackle!

I watched them all. Another newsflash: CC’s several state bowl games were ALWAYS SMALL SCHOOL. They’ve never progressed beyond the SJS Section final in Division II. I’d also say that any team that wins a state bowl game has had a great year. So, your statement about the following years of CC’s teams being better are simply unproven conjecture on your part.
