Twelve JV teams are divided into three four-team brackets -- Open, Division I and Division II -- to finish the junior varsity season with an event designed to show teams and coaches how far they come this year.

The brackets were decided by a vote of the coaches, but the Carondelet JV Invitational is also an opportunity for coaches to start setting up next year's schedule, entering tournaments, etc. The plan is to make this an annual JV showcase for teams at all levels, and an opportunity for coaches and players to see just how good JV teams can be.

The event will span two Saturdays -- Feb. 1 and Feb. 8. The winners on the first Saturday will play for the championship the next Saturday, and the losers will play for third.

The matchups;

Open

Carondelet vs. Castro Valley, 3:30 p.m.
California (top seed) vs. Clayton Valley, 5 p.m.

Division 1

Northgate vs. Bishop O'Dowd, 12:30 p.m.
Salesian (top seed) vs. Campolindo, 2 p.m.

Division 2

Amador Valley vs. College Park, 9:30 a.m.
Freedom (top seed) vs. Harker, 11 a.m.

I don't know. I just came up with this idea last spring and am hoping it goes well enough we can expand next year. Maybe a boys' JV coach will try to put something similar together. Hope so ...

Just curious, is this considered a post season tournament. Do these game count toward the maximum amount of games (eg CCS 24) they are allowed to play?

This is not a postseason tournament -- just regular games.

Along that line, MCAL teams were not allowed to play because of a league rule that says no JV team can play after the varsity season ends. Since the MCAL has playoffs the week of Feb. 10, the last varsity regular season games are Friday, Feb. 7 -- so the league ruled that the JV teams could not play in the final round, next Saturday, Feb. 8.

It seems a little goofy to me. For example, if a varsity team scheduled a game Feb. 8, would that mean the JV team could play? And it's not like the varsities are done playing, and of course they could still bring JV players up for the playoffs.

Ah well ... administrative reality triumphs again.

Great idea and follow through . Good for the game

Thanks. Things went well yesterday. Only two games had a final margin greater than 10 points, and one went into OT: On a banked-in corner three at the buzzer.
