Serra-Mitty on live-stream now

Serra's QB Lampkin throws 25 yd pass to RB Mahasin to make score 10-0 Serra late first quarter.

I was actually watching all 3 WCAL games last nite and then switched over late to SHP-Hillsdale game which was a thriller as Hillsdale pulled off the upset 20-13.

Couple quick notes on Serra-Mitty so far. Monarchs early have had some success running against the Padres similar to HMB having same success in first 1/2 of their game with Serra. On offense Serra like the HMB game 2 weeks ago has thrown into coverage and into double coverage on a long pass play. Having said that Lampkin just threw 43 yd TD to Mahasin [short pass with long YAC]. Having seen SF's secondary vs DLS and also Bells if Serra' continues to throw into heavy coverage it could prove disastrous with either team.

I have currently:

1. SF
2. Serra/Bells [tie]
4. VC
5. S.I.
6. SHC
7. ARHS
8. Mitty

What is a bit concerning for the rest of the league is that Serra's unbeaten freshman team is rolling. The JV unit has one loss. And the varsity includes no fewer than 12 sophs on its roster. In essence, Serra's program is heavily tilted toward the future. Ouch.

The Saint Francis JV and Freshman teams are both undefeated. But it is too early in the season to draw any meaningful conclusion’s.

Probably true. But it's those 12 varsity sophs that really do raise an eyebrow.

Don't have the roster in front of me, but if memory serves me right I believe Serra had 4 frosh on varsity for the previous abbreviated season, which is the first time I remember any WCAL varsity football team having 4 frosh [unheard of previous].
So Question for ColHenry: were those 4 frosh that good and deserving of a varsity slot OR is it a change in coaching philosophy to get the best/better players on varsity ASAP for more experience/"extended tour" so to speak by Coach Walsh?

The four spring frosh in question were (are) outstanding. The 12 sophs on the Serra varsity roster are indeed a lot. More than any in memory. But Walsh believes that excellence breeds excellence regardless of age and depth (platooning) is key in the WCAL. He typically has a few sophs on his varsity. And he uses them. Why have them up if they aren't going to play? This season, this dandy dozen is making a contribution. Some of them start, Bey and Mann in particular. The transfer QB, Smith (reportedly an outstanding prospect), is also a soph and he will wait his turn at the position. Serra (with 220 players on three teams, the most in its history since its first varsity in 1946) has an abundance of fast, athletic kids. As always, one question hovers over the program: Quality depth along the lines. Beginning this Saturday in San Mateo, we will know a lot more about that issue. Bellarmine will be the Padres' first test of any substance. Their first three opponents have been unable to compete with any degree of consistency or staying power. On the final day of the WCAL season, St. Francis (with one of the most impressive collections of very large linemen seen this year _ one family alone has contributed three goliaths to the mix) will provide even more challenges for Serra.
