The four spring frosh in question were (are) outstanding. The 12 sophs on the Serra varsity roster are indeed a lot. More than any in memory. But Walsh believes that excellence breeds excellence regardless of age and depth (platooning) is key in the WCAL. He typically has a few sophs on his varsity. And he uses them. Why have them up if they aren't going to play? This season, this dandy dozen is making a contribution. Some of them start, Bey and Mann in particular. The transfer QB, Smith (reportedly an outstanding prospect), is also a soph and he will wait his turn at the position. Serra (with 220 players on three teams, the most in its history since its first varsity in 1946) has an abundance of fast, athletic kids. As always, one question hovers over the program: Quality depth along the lines. Beginning this Saturday in San Mateo, we will know a lot more about that issue. Bellarmine will be the Padres' first test of any substance. Their first three opponents have been unable to compete with any degree of consistency or staying power. On the final day of the WCAL season, St. Francis (with one of the most impressive collections of very large linemen seen this year _ one family alone has contributed three goliaths to the mix) will provide even more challenges for Serra.
