This is my spot for the evening’s action...

My fabulous Pilots of Jason Kidd Hi... err, St. Joe’s take on Gateway of SF in a 1st-round NCS matchup.

The Pilots would be favored by at least 20 if there was a betting line... But the teams still gotta put it on the floor and compete...

Doesn’t look like Gateway has much size... Campos will enjoy a rare size advantage in the post.

24-5 end of the first... Guess I’ll cool it on this til there’s a final.

@kiddman32 that program they have at St Joe's is really special. Coach Lippi has done a great job over the years. This was supposed to be a down year for SJND after they lost their star Jade Smith. But I can tell other guys are stepping up, and they look as scary now as they did last year.

Hoping that we get my Knights vs. St. Joe's in the Championship. But SVSP and Saint Mary's are going to be tough teams for my Knights to solve.

Ah yes, once again showing how stupid the matchups are in NCS. Gateway is a tiny school with no athletic tradition. The only thing that is interesting is that one of the schools in their league is the one and only San Mateo County public school that is not in the PAL. VERY few people know what that school is, although I will bet you that ColHenryLives knows it.

It is Pescadero High School, 30 minutes south from Half Moon Bay. Just 100 students seven years ago, maybe even less today.

Here's an article on the school, which ran in the Chronicle 7 years ago.

@TurtleLoveCA I remember playing Baseball at Stuart Hall, and we would have to travel there every year. It was always a blood bath. I never remember Pescadero coming within even 10 runs of us. Lots of mercy rules.

I guess they have to play somewhere, but I can't remember one time in my life that they actually were competitive. Let alone successful.

Having Gateway face SJND yesterday would be equal to the Warriors playing the Erie Rockhounds......Pretty easy to figure out how that one was going to go!

It's a beautiful drive and I love Pescadero. Anything at Duarte's is great, but man what a schlep from The City for a high school baseball or basketball game.

What would have been worse is if the game was played at GATEWAY HIGH. LOL Nothing against the school or the program. GATEWAY HIGH is the former Ben Franklin Middle School of the SF Unified School District. The court is middle school sized and relatively tight for high school games. Though the bulk of the BCL teams in SF have smaller courts in general. Even Stuart Hall's relatively newer gym is not quite full high school regulation sized.

High school courts can be 74' long at a minimum to college and NBA size 94' long maximum.

Oh yeah I know. 74' is a relatively tight fit for teams, especially the long athletic teams. It's definitely an interesting aspect of high school sports with the different gym setups through the Bay Area.

Y’all shoulda seen the old “gym” at Monte Vista Christian of Watsonville... No way they’d be allowed to play games there now! The court couldn’t have been much longer than 60’ nor wider than 45’. Had a corrugated-aluminum (or maybe tin) roof over the court... Well, most of the court anyways... On one sideline, the roof came down to a maybe 8-foot ceiling... Any player near there could easily accidentally hit the ceiling if he raised the ball overhead... That’s outa bounds, Son... Heater plumbing overhead near the backboards often got hit by what shoulda been normal corner-jumpers... Seating was a few rows of folding chairs on one side and one end... Place was a total nightmare for visiting teams... Finally, during my junior year that roof started leaking and dripping all over the center of the floor and MV Christian had to borrow a middle-school gym in town... This woulda been fine, except whatever company they had paint the lines had ZERO clue... The court was normal length, but it was JUST AS WIDE and the stands extended inbounds... They played the “one step in” rule.

Soon they built a gorgeous new gym on campus... I was only there once, some ten years after the original gym was closed.... Amazingly, that creaky old gym was still standing, right next to their new one... Walked in there and tossed up a few shots for fun... Crazy old place!

Just another nostalgic rant from ol’ Kiddman32...
