SJS D2 Championship - Central Catholic vs Del Oro

That was a crazy finish. Looked like CC had game in hand. CC QB gets ejected, then they fall apart. CC back up qb and Offense struggled to get play off in time, correct kids on field and alignment about 6-7 times in last 7-8 min which used all of CC timeouts or drew penalties. Will have to see if ejection was warranted. It happen in front of us and we saw DO player hit the QB in face mask and QB retaliated but dunno if he pushed him off in face mask or punch. If you asked any CC fan 1000 scenarios, qb getting ejected wouldn’t be one of them. That kid is so low key and docile, never expected that to happen.
Great job by DO fighting back and coming up with huge play to win the game. 2 TDS in last 6 min or so after struggling most of game. That kid that returned the fumble will never forget that play! Best of luck to DO rest of way.

Of course Ala-freaking-Bama would win that way. Can't stand that program or the liar Nick Saban. I think they stole the four leaf clover Notre Dame used to have shoved up their you know what for so many years and are still sitting on it.

2 years in a row that Kirby Smart and GA have come from ahead to lose. It becomes contagious.
Totally agree with you TR in regards to this Trick Nick Saban clown. Saban is a total D-bag for what he did to Jalen Hurts after their win over Georgia tonight. If you take a look at how he treated Hurts on the sideline after the game you would be pissed as I am. Here's the Hurts/Saban scenario as soon as they won the game. Hurts comes over to Saban and tells him something along the line "Great comeback, we won this game COACH!!!" As Hurts was holding Saban's arm and celebrating the win, Saban not once acknowledged this kid. Saban was stone faced and ignored this kid for at least 10 seconds of his time while he was focused on his disciple coach Smart across the field. Hurts walks in front of Saban and Saban turns away and never made eye contact with his QB. Unfreakingbelievable!!! A few minutes later during the post game interview with Saban, Hurts comes over and Saban has the nerves to say on national TV that he's so proud of Hurts. He kissed Hurts BUTT all over the field in the spotlight but behind close doors he IGNORED the kid as if he had the Bubonic plague. I pray, Shannon Sharp catches this and point it out on the "Undisputed" on Monday. Now I'm eager to see who Saban starts in the playoffs now that Hurts has redeemed himself in such a profound manner. If he has the best interest of his players he'd start Hurts in the playoffs. We shall see.

Del Oro defense played great, they kept the eagles close. They didn’t win 31-28 but they won 20-17 still by 3.And guess what.......They finished what Indy couldn’t!And they weren’t Jinxed.

It was a good game. All credit to DO and hope they win out.

There was some spirited hitting all game. Kids on both sides were giving their tackles a little extra sauce throughout. Good rivalry now!

I really like the CC run game. They have some really good athletes and their lineman finish off their blocks. #1 and #4 are terrific players on both sides of the ball and #55 is a beast.

DO was fortunate to get out of that game with a win, the rust was obvious to everyone in that stadium, but that's how things go with DO, never count 'em out.

Thanks Champ for jinxing DO to a win!;) You called the game!

Was a pleasure meeting you bro!

Oh and sorry for practically tackling you when DO scored on that fumble return:)
Yesterday was a football fans dream if you attended the 2 games vs the CC teams in Div2 and Div3.In one of the games one of our local teams(Del Oro) managed to come bk late in game, very late but yet excite the home crowd with a wild fumble recovery that a DO player happened to pick up and sprint to a Div2 Section tile,a play that will have many of us in attendance remembering and a play that a DO player will NEVER ever forget. In other game we witnessed one team(Placer Hillmen)roll into a SJS Div3 Championship game vs a tremendously talented Capitol Christian team that by all accounts with the enormous amount of talent that they and Coach Casey Taylor(former DO Coach)have should have in all probability defeated this Hillmen team by a larger score.Well that was not the case and this home grown, gritty band of Strawchewers from lil ole Auburn did NOT disappoint!A couple 2-3 plays and decisions dictated this Championships outcome...........and those 2-3 plays and decisions were the difference in winning a section title and not,and for Placer it was the latter!!This game was hard fought by 2 very good teams and in the end one advances the other looks to next season. As a spectator one can see the enormous difference in talent on the field, but one can also see the enormous amount of HEART on the field as well......and these lil homegrown strawchewers from Auburn had every bit of heart. Both teams had to dig deep dn inside to be victorious,it was NOT a beating by one team as many may have thought given the amount of talent on CC ‘s team!So to that this fan says BRAVO not only to CC and Coach Taylor for their hard fought SJS Div 3 victory but also to Placer and Coach Montoya for their tremendous success and grit this 2018 12-1 season.Good luck to CC the remainder of season and thanks for ANOTHER great yr Placer!

Couldn’t agree more Champ. Montoya gets everything out of his players. Love watching that OL bust open holes for the RB’s. Got to attend more Placer games because I love their smash mouth run game. Great season for the Hillman!

Haha. I deserve that. But honestly, my gut is saying DO got lucky. Good luck moving on.
I hear that every year. I guess DO team should spend more time in casinos.

Champ can tell you that most of the 4th quarter I was telling fans around me that DO was going to win this game. They just have a way to get the job done most of the time. I have seen this movie too many times to ever count them out in challenging situations

I will second that Champ! I had a blast! Great to meet you, WWHS, Randy and others.

On the way into the Placer game last night TR and I met DO’s QB and his father. They are great folks and had a lot of good things to say about TR’s posts/material here.

Good times and look forward to more strawchewer games!

This is true...I was sitting right next to Smash as he said these exact words while the Eagles were trailing..........We are going to win this game!Truth be told.

Seems folks keep poking at DO and how lucky they are and plays like that the fumble at the end of the game was just luck as though the RB just lost the handle on his own. Please look at the following video starting around 2:53 if you have any doubts and you will clearly see DO’s #3 strip the ball.
https://www.modbee.com/sports/high-school/prep-football/article222509770.html

DO practices ball stripping like most other schools but the reason DO wins games like these is not because of luck but because they do not give up, they fight to the end. I’m not saying there is no notion of “fortune” but that you have to create your own fortune sometimes and that is the case here.

CC’s success speaks for itself. Last year they get to D2 semi’s, this year they get to the big game so clearly they are making progress.

IMO CC’s #4 was their best player. DO was stuffing the run between the tackles where #1 was having little success. It was #4 that was eventually getting to second level and making plays on DO. Canepa then resorted to sweeping #1 where he found some room to run. Fundamentally while #1 is a great athlete but he seems to run too vertical which is one reason he was not finding mojo between tackles. #4 runs with lower center of gravity and keeps his legs churning spelling success up the gut. If he is a jr then CC will return a very good RB.

This game was won because DO D kept them in it and scored the final blow.

Maybe 3rd time is a charm for CC next year but CC is finding out how tough the sledding is in D2 and wish them the best in 2019.

Too bad CC isn't in the CCS...they would still be moving on as a loser
Maybe SFL as well, big difference from Manteca,Oakdale,Sierra and less notables at bottom of pecking order in the VOL,to the likes of Folsom,Granite Bay,Rocklin,Grant,Oak Ridge......DEL ORO.....oh yeah Whitney,lol...only one pecking at the bottom.

1 and 4 are seniors. CC has a stud Jr #8 rb-dB that was out injured for DO game also. He won’t have measurable but stud Hs back who has had some huge games this year and recently on fire.
DO def earned this win. Great play on scope and run. The thing most are questioning is the ejection of QB and CC wasn’t prepared for his lose obviously as the O fell apart after.

Yeah, extremely nice people. In the brief few minutes I spoke to him, I could easily see why Carson is a QB. Very bright, confident, polite kid.

I got a bit mixed up, though, as for some reason I was thinking he graduated last season. That's what I get for only seeing DO play once this year and about 6 weeks ago. Totally spaced.

Oh, and don't be modest, SMR. Carson's dad was complimenting you and your honest, forthright approach (and lack of agenda). I totally agree with him. He even recognized your truck!

One thing is for sure, you are a devoted and enthusiastic HS football fan. Missed only 1 DO game in 20 years?? WOW.

Absolutely. I love meeting folks that share my affinity for HS football. IMO, it's the purest and best form of the sport! It is THE ultimate team sport and all these young kids are playing for the love of the game and their schools. Can't beat that!

You and WWHS certainly have a lot of historical knowledge which is right up my alley! Hope we all catch up again next week at the SF-DO game and possibly meet a few others. This season is winding down too fast! Only 2 to go.

Thanks TR but to be clear it is 1 playoff game in the period I missed but I’ve probably missed 2-4 non-playoff games in that period.

BTW, you are the walking encyclopedia on these boards. You know more about DO history than I do sometimes and the history of dozens of other schools. Must be that photo graphic memory you have. Your posts are always factual based unless you specify otherwise, keep posting bro!

Eh, I guess when your passionate about something, you retain lot. I’ve just been lucky to see a lot of great local area football over years.

My wife will tell you I never remember anything truly important!

How does Del Oro get to play down in d2 I don’t get it
Del Oro doesn’t get to “play down” in D2. Their enrollment of 1700 puts them in D2. In fact, they are one of the smaller schools in D2. However next year they will likely be moved up to D1 because of competitive equity (in other words they will be moved up due to their ongoing success at D2). That is the same reason CC has been playing up into D2 because of their ongoing success.

I was going to chime in a few days ago and say the same thing then realized it was the 1st post by a newly created user. Most likely a trolling attempt and a waste of time to respond.

But you are spot on. DO's enrollment has been borderline D2/D3 for quite some time. Some lost their minds when they fell to D3 in 2010 and 2011, but that's where their enrollment dictated they go. They are a bit like Central Catholic in that the strength and success of their program exceeds their enrollment numbers. Rules have already been tweaked to keep them from falling into D3 again, so I don't understand the outcry over playing D2. They are playing at or above where their enrollment would place them.

That won't yet apply to DO. They haven't won 3 consecutive section titles at the D2 level. They've won 3 of the past 4 and 4 of the past 6, but not 3 in a row.

GB snapped a 2-year streak in 2017. So the Golden Eagles have to win next season and the year after for the rule to apply. Or win the SFL League title -- whichever came first.

TR - I used the word "likely" not because of the 3 in a row rule, but the "continued success" rule that reads as follows:

Continued Success. If a school has maintained continued success over several years but has not won three straight Section titles, the Section Commissioner (in consultation with the Executive Committee) may recommend to the board that a school be moved to a higher division. Continued success may include, but not be limited to, the following: * Section semifinalist or finalist for four or more years in a row with at least one Section title; or * Four Section titles in a span of six years.

Gotcha. Thanks for clarifying.

Sadly, I actually did some research after reading your post to make sure I knew what I was talking about before replying, but I obviously didn't do a good job of it. I thought the only way they would move up was win 3 in a row as Central did in D4 or by winning their D1 league. I actually wasn't fully aware of the portion you just posted. I vaguely recall hearing something about it a year or two ago, but apparently didn't grasp the entire thing.

I suppose the question comes down to whether there will be a behind the scenes push to move them up. They certainly have won 4 of 6 and qualify on that basis.

That was a real question not a troll attempt. I just didn’t understand how the 2nd best team in the best d1 league plays in d2 every year. I’m not new to this forum you see my user name in time you’ll figure out who I was

Curious, what's your gut telling you now??

Not a CC fan at ALL. But, CC should have won that game. CC's QB lost control and hit a kid, then got ejected. Seemed like they lost composure after that. They lost the game for their self.. DO got lucky. Real LUCKY, plain and simple.

You know how many times a Del Oro opponent has said the exact same things? I've thought it many times myself over the years.

Thing is, once a team does it over and over and over again and becomes known for it -- at some point you have to start giving them credit and acknowledge that they are very adept at putting themselves in position to take advantage of mistakes and/or fortunate breaks. That's actually a very underrated skill.

For me, same thing applies to DLS. They have that same skill. (and the NE Patriots whom I really hate!)

It's no coincidence that both programs have a very long and storied history of success at the D1/D2 levels.
