This was the worst in perhaps 40 years. Notre Dame humiliated the Cardinal by 49 points Thursday and it could have been much more glaring. Stanford simply does not have anything close to the talent it once possessed. The program, now in the hands of Kate Paye, a former Stanford player and an ex-Menlo School standout, reached an unfortunate nadir this week. Paye is faced with a big rebuilding job for a one-time signature West Coast women's program. Ouch.

They have a highly ranked recruiting class and will bring back point guard Talana Lepolo, who essentially took a redshirt year because of some lingering knee issues.

Because of a glaring lack of team quickness and athleticism, Stanford has been reduced to a slow, plodding halfcourt team that cannot compete at anything close to a high level. Considering the huge talent gap, Kate Paye and her staff have done a reasonably good job of patching together an offense and defense to mask their issues. Too bad even a reduced playbook can't generate much in the win column. Her players are simply unable to execute even when opportunities exist. The loss today at Louisville drops the Cardinal record to 11-12, its worst at this point in a season in two generations. Thank goodness for Cal.

Obviously, your favorite Colonel has not been clear. The Stanford program has not had a losing season in 40 years. Further, Stanford has been in the NCAA tourney 37 times, with three titles and 27 league championships. Comparing it to Cal is apples and oranges when you look at the big picture. Cal has never been a consistent national power. When Notre Dame routs Cal, few raise an eyebrow. When Stanford gets hammered (by anyone), it's something else.
