So I just read Concord High is changing their mascot from the Minutemen to the Crocodiles. I guess honoring this piece of American history is simply to much. The fact minutemen has “men” in it and carried a musket was enough to ruffle the nickers of the woke crowd. YV has also gone from the Warriors to the wolves. At least wolves were are back in Ca. where as the crocodile never was.

Pretty sure that wolf got killed by a car. But we do have Fighting Zebras as a mascot. And no zebras in California?

The first day of school in the Western Placer Unified School District meant the opening of Twelve Bridges High School, Lincoln's newest school campus. And, its mascot is the Raging Rhino. This is the first time the city Lincoln will have two separate high schools.

Raging Rhinos v. Fighting Zebras...

From this fan of odd mascot names... I give this ten million thumbs up!

Meanwhile, I looked further into the Concord High thing... Seems they wanted to go with the alliterative thing, nominating three "C" names to be voted on. Crocodiles beat out Coyotes and Cobras. If I'd had a vote, I would have gone with Cobras.

I have a little bit of insight on the fighting zebras. :) I grew up in Lincoln and was a teacher and head football coach at the school for 7 years. The school was established back in 1907. The legend has it that the basketball team only had old ref jerseys to wear to the game. They put them on and someone said they looked like a bunch of zebras on the court. They then became the zebras. Then you go so why are they blue and gold.? Well I was told because the founder of the school went to Cal Berkeley. I still cannot figure out how it turned into royal blue and gold. I know they had lots of different shades of blue and gold over the years. I know when I was HC we went to the Navy blue and gold. When I left they changed it back and voted on the official colors of Royal Blue and Gold. As far as the Rhinos I guess they are trying to keep the safari theme. :(

Thanks for the info. I love the names! The Mighty Arabs are still the most bizarre mascot for a high school!

I don't like changing the nickname because I'm all for the less common nicknames (Please no more wildcats or bulldogs or falcons).

So if there were going to change it, Crocodiles is decent
Crocodiles is a bar name. In home town where old folks go to party! Mustang born mustang bred be a Mustang till the day I'm dead!

I found a list of mascot nicknames on the Massey ratings site... Looks like this site covers some 20 states.

Belfry HS, Montana... the Bats. Bats in the belfry... what could be sillier?

Several schools have "Wampus Cats" as their name. I remember reading many years ago about this one... The article I read claimed that the original Wampus Cats are in Texas, at Itasca HS and that several others around the country seem to have copied the name.

The story goes that some team member back in the 20's blurted it out in the huddle one night when they were clobbering somebody... "Man, we're playing like WAMPUS CATS tonight!" The improvised name went from the huddle to the sideline to the cheerleaders, etc.

Soon after they changed their name from some forgotten name to Wampus Cats. Art dep't created a fictional cat logo, the whole deal.

Any school that wants to change their team name in the future should use this name for my approval. :)

Here's a list of some truly strange (and amazing) names...

HS nicknames

(yes, I have been known to nerd out regarding nicknames...)

Here's a list of California-only ones...

CA nicknames

Id like for the mascots to sound something similar to the school or something good that relates to pop culture.
Concord Condors
Antioch Anteaters
Liberty Birdies
Riordan Rearends
Jefferson Georges. I will also accept Starships
Acalanes Alkies
Alameda Pitas
Galileo Let-Me-Gos
Stuart Hall Smallies

My favorite team during the time I was in Oregon was Jefferson HS in North Portland. The Jefferson Democrats... Terrific hoops tradition, and a great logo that played on the Demo's political party affiliation.

Don't mess with that donkey!!

California list is terrible. Coachella Valley Arabs and Compton Tar Babes are missing. Both should be top 5. Mercy High Skippers? Hell I think they shut that place down years ago.

Riordan Rear Enders is definitely going to be questioned by the LBGTG community rightfully so.

When Fly Williams played for Austin Peay, They would chant. " The Fly is open, Lets go Peay.
Wow - I thought it was really funny... and odd... until I saw their url https://letsgopeay.com/. Now I just think it is bizarre.

I see you can join the Monocle Society, and become a VIPeay if you donate enough money. The Austin Peay Governors mascot looks like Rich Uncle Pennybags from Monopoly. But I guess the mascot is an representation of the school's namesake, Governor Austin Peay.

....seriously tho....
concrete jr. had a grade schoolmate who went on to QB @ St Mary's, Berkeley & CCSF and ended up getting recruited by the A. P. Governors. Played 1 year, seriously injured his shoulder during a game and ended his football dreams, had a not so friendly parting.
Guess he left Peay'd off.

def missed out on the TarBabes. it plays of the mascot of compton college TarTars

I saw both the Fighting Arabs and the TarBabes on another list, which for some reason I didn't link.

My brothers all went to Concord HS, and the oldest was there when the school opened. I mentioned the name change to him last night, and he was NOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT happy. He says he was one of the most vocal at the school in favor of choosing Minutemen for their mascot, and helped sway the student vote in that direction. He also said that if he ever happens to get to Concord during the school year, he'd like to go right to the principal's office and voice his displeasure over the change (He likes to talk big, so take that with a huge grain of salt).

When I mentioned the three names that were voted on, he agreed with me that he'd go with Cobras if he had to... but NOT over Minutemen!! :)
