Haven't read too many stats yet, but not seeing too many outstanding times in 100 & 200 among CCS high schools with most 100 times being in the 11.4 - 11.7. So far the fastest time I've seen anywhere posted was Joey Sanfillipo of Bellarmine with a time around 11.0 flat. Any times posted in CCS or NCS under 11.0 so far?

For that matter any other outstanding marks coming out of any WCAL or CCS school meets?

Re: Fastest in WCAL this Year?

OK according to updated info the fastest time in WCAL this year is by Johnson of St. Francis at 10.86 - just off fastest time in entire CCS by Minocha of Harker at 10.84.

Bells & SF have 2nd & 3rd fastest times in 400 relay [42.60, 43.40] behind #1 time in CCS by Palo Alto at 42.31.

Couple other top WCAL marks:

* 1600 - Murphy of SI - 4:14 - fastest in CCS.
* 400 - Orloff of Serra - 49.65 - 2nd in CCS.
* 1600 relay - Serra - 3:27 - 2nd in CCS.
* Long Jump - Wong of Mitty - 23' 6.75" - tops in CCS.
*Triple Jump - Wong of Mitty - 45' 9.75" - tops in CCS.
* Shot Put - Beering of Serra - 58-11 - tops in CCS.
* Pole Vault - Toney of SF - 14'11.5" - tops in CCS.

* Best performance/mark so far would appear to be the 58'11" mark in shot put by Beering of Serra - among top marks in NorCal

Re: Fastest in WCAL this Year?

Just for fun looked up fastest sprint records for WCAL to compare with above & then took it a step further:

WCAL Records:

200M - 21.6 Tony Miller of Riordan 1987
400M - 48.35 Angelo Fobbs-Valentino of Serra 2003
400 Relay - 42.28 Bellarmine 2012
1600 - 4:15 Scott Robinson - Bellarmine 1987
1600 Relay - 3:21 Bellarmine 2006
Long Jump - 23'8" Jim Fregosi - Serra 1959 [unofficial 24'10" Lynn Swann/Serra, CA State Meet 1rst place 1971
Triple Jump - 47'11" Mike Haynes of Riordan 1975

Looks like several WCAL records could be in jeopardy this season.

Re: Fastest in WCAL this Year?

And the FASTEST in the WCAL is.... Khalid Johnson, St. Francis.

Going into the CCS Top 8 Classic track meet Johnson already had the fastest time in WCAL & 2nd fastest in the CCS.
Johnson improved upon his 100 time of 10.86 to 10.80 and set a school record in the 200M at 21.46 - making it the 3rd fastest time in the state this year. Now that is one fast Lancer!

Re: Fastest in WCAL this Year?

The final results from the CA state high school track & field meet are in and as usual SoCal schools dominated in most events.

I'll cover some of the WCAL highlights from the preliminaries and where they ended up in the final heats and results.

Bellarmine's 4x100 team broke their school record for the 2nd time in 2 weeks in the prelims - which it set in last weeks CCS finals at 41.58. The team was hoping to improve yet again in the state meet in order to compete and possibly place in the top 3.
Bellarmine's team consisted of Taylor Njaka, Aaron Chapman, Nikolai Makarov & dual sport star Joey Sanfilippo.

Speaking of Sanfilippo the fastest sprinter in the WCAL, he also qualified for the finals in the 100 meters with a blazing time of 10.66 which is among the state's faster times and fastest the WCAL has seen in a number of years.

Bell's Jaylen Wright also advanced in the 110 High Hurdles with a time of 14.12.

Serra's Jon Beering who broke a long standing school record in the shot put advanced with a throw of 57'9".

St, Francis Marc Toney was one of 12 pole vaulters to advance with all 12 clearing 15'.5.75".

First of all to even make the state preliminaries from the CCS you have to be an outstanding athlete with exceptional marks.
Most of the CCS athletes do not make it to the state meet and the majority of those who do qualify are quickly eliminated.
Here are some great local performers who did not advance with the state's elite in their events:

St. Francis 400-relay [42.70], Lampkin of SHC in 400 Meters [49.10], Sanfilippo of Bellarmine in 200 meters [22.13],
Wong of Mitty in Long Jump [22'6"], Khalil Johnson of St. Francis in Long Jump 21'6"], Stofer of Bellarmine in Pole Vault at 14'6", Wong of Mitty in triple jump at 41'6".

State Finals Results in next post Monday 6/3/13.

Re: Fastest in WCAL this Year?

CALIFORNIA State Finals Results for HS Track & Field - WCAL Athletes final standings:

[WCAL records are ONLY those times/marks set in WCAL track & field meets - so any marks besting the WCAL records set in the state meet are not recognized as actual WCAL records [even though they are representing their school and league].

4x100 Relay - Bellarmine 6th Place - 41.56 [beats WCAL record of 42.08 set this season by same members]
Shot Put - Jonathan Beering - Junipero Serra - 8th Place - 58'3" [WCAL record is 59'11"]
100 - Joey Sanfilippo - Bellarmine 8th Place 10.85 [San Filippo previously ran a 10.6 in sectional finals, but WCAL record of 10.7 by Byron Marshall of Valley Christian in 2010 still stands].
110 HH - Jalen Wright - Bellarmine 5th Place 14.24 [WCAL record of 14.08 also by Wright earlier this season]
Pole Vault - Marc Toney - St. Francis 6th Place 15'10" [WCAL record of 16'1" by Toney earlier this season].

SO how do the WCAL records stack up against the winners of this year's state meet? Here you go to show you just how tough these state finals are:

2013 CA State Tracks Finals Top Marks:

400 Relay 40.49 - WCAL Record 42.08
100M - 10.33 - WCAL Record 10.70
200M - 20.86 - WCAL Record 21.60
400M - 46.53 - WCAL Record 48.35
800M - 1:50.71 - WCAL Record 1:53.2
110 HH - 13.90 - WCAL Record 14.08
1600M - 4:06.91 - WCAL Record 4:15.38
Long Jump - 24'11.75 - WCAL Record 23'.8"
Triple Jump - 50'11.75" - WCAL Record 47'11"
Shot Put - 66'2.50" - WCAL Record 59'11"

Re: Fastest in WCAL this Year? Sanfilippo of Bellarmine

To clarify the fastest sprinter in WCAL this season & possibly in the history of the WCAL league is Joey Sanfilippo of Bellarmine who made it al the way to state finals in the 100M [as well as 4x100 relay].

Sanfillipo's 10.66 in regional finals is faster than the WCAL record of 10.70, but is not counted as did not take place in a WCAL scheduled meet between league schools.

Doesn't matter though as we know Sanfilippo is clearly the fastest person in WCAL this year and possibly all time [and one reason why Bells repeated as WCAL champs in football].

Remember the name as we most certainly may hear more about this athlete in the future.

Re: Fastest in WCAL this Year? Sanfilippo of Bellarmine

Best CCS sprinters in recent years was North Salinas Ronnie Drummond and he also played football in college 2004 at 10.55. and Rubin Williams Valley Christion had a blazing 10.37 wind aided and broke the CCS 28 year record for 200 at 20.84.

Re: Fastest in WCAL this Year? Sanfilippo of Bellarmine

Sanfillipo is right up there as the fastest person in WCAL of all time. Remember that Tony Miller (Riordan '88) ran a 10.41 in the 100 meters, and a 21.08 in the 200 meters, both in the 1987 CCS Finals. Those times, too, do not count toward the WCAL records.

He also made it to the State Finals, but ran against the legendary Quincy Watts. Miller went on to a great track career at UCLA.
