WCAL Football 2018 - San Jose Merc All Bay Area Team

WCAL Football 2018 - Projection for this week's games..

SHC over SHP by a score. OK before anyone starts laughing I BELIEVE in the Irish! This team almost beat Palma & took down Bells & S.I. While SHP Gators are 9-1 and took down S.I. SHC will come out prepared & motivated. SHC Irish could, would & should be able to overcome the powerful & wealthy Gator's from priveledged Menlo Park's campus that rivals that of the local JC's. SHC's battle tested schedule has me confidant while SHP lost to the only really good team they played in Menlo-Atherton. Oh Wait - that's the same team that lost to Palma who the same Irish team took down to the wire. This could be "The Year of the Irish" once again, IF you Believe... SHC 21-20 over SHP

Games and competition gets tougher with each round and the Irish are missing a huge difference maker in Geoffrey Hester. SHP has a stout run defense as evidenced against SI. There may not be any holes for Heard to go through with Hester out. SH is going to have to rely on their D once again and hope the gunslinger Dowling can make some plays to Watkins and Mateo.

Sacred Heart Prep football is relatively new. Formerly an all-girls' convent school founded in 1898, SHP, with the addition of boys (total student body is about 600 now), determined that football would be a wise investment right around the turn of the century. The Gators, playing in the Bay Counties League early on, were decent right off the bat. The hiring of Pete Lavorato upped the ante considerably and SHP, blessed with a cadre of outstanding individual athletes (much to the dismay of people at Serra, St. Francis, etc.) became a small-school NorCal power as a member of the PAL. Which brings up a point. You can make a fair argument that the rise of SHP (in spite of tuition/fees that approach $50,000) and the arrival of Patrick Walsh at Serra in 2001 have been two key factors in diluting some PAL public school rosters of key public middle school athletes. The Polynesian aspect has been especially noticeable at Serra. The SHP tree-lined campus is an Atherton treasure. It includes a swimming complex, baseball field, tennis courts, gymnasiums, a football field and a variety of amenities (including the renovated original convent school building, a retirement home for Sacred Heart nuns and a graveyard). The place is worth a visit with or without an athletic contest in mind. With its considerable acreage and range of physical additions and improvements, SHP is unlike the SHC campus which is cramped and hemmed in within the tight confines of the San Francisco urban core, just blocks from the Tenderloin. Parking is available on the SHP campus. The SHP football food service is more than adequate as well.

Another difference. SHC parent's re-finance their homes for tuition; SHP parent's use it as a tax-right off. Yes, SHP campus rivals many toney east coast prep schools. SHC kids walk over the homeless on way to school.

That last comment is over-the-top and patently unfair without some sort of actual proof of such alleged egregious behavior.

For those who've not viewed the SHP campus in Atherton colhenry's depiction is accurate in that it is a jewel of a HS & rated as one of the top Catholic HS's in CA. The 64-acre campus for the relative small student body of 615 +/- resembles that of a small JC rather than a HS most of us are used to seeing. As to its tuition there are actually a number of bay area privates that have higher tuitions than SHP. Makes me glad my own kids are grown...

The SHP website lists its enrollment at 605. Is that incorrect?

That would be Atherton, Rmbr. Lol! Sacred Heart Schools incl SHP) are made up of pre-K-12th grade. My daughters are currently enrolled in the grammar school. The grammar schools have their OWN athletic fields and even have a small farm with animals that the kids tend. Surprisingly, there are a lot of members of the dad's club that are from the City and went to one of the Holy Trinity High Schools.. We kind of kid each other saying this is exactly how are schools were for us growing up. Lol! Seriously, if you ever do get a chance, take stroll through the campus. Interestingly, the men's Water Polo and Lacrosse teams are in thew WCAL and hold more titles than SHC's total WCAL titles combined. Currently, there are capital projects underway to expand the campusI. Many say it's a mini Stanford campus.
Irish fans, parking can be found either off Valparaiso or Emilie gates. Campus map can be found on the SHS Athletics site. https://shschools.myschoolapp.com/ftpimages/783/download/download_1699629.pdf

Have you seen what kids walk through off the 47 Van Ness? Willow Alley or Margaret Hayward Park?
All up and down Van Ness. It's disgraceful. It's also patently unfair to conflate a problem brought on by politics with a school or the Archdiocese.
SHC is NOT in, or near any "tenderloin". It is in the Cathedral Hill district, WEST of Van Ness and it is safe. Is there no end to this jealousy?

I'll gladly trade football, basketball and baseball titles to lacrosse, water polo, swimming, golf and tennis any day. Oh, and boat racing too. The AAA had regattas during the late 30's. They also had rifle teams.

And, nearly right next door, is Menlo School, another ultra-pricey private outfit and a rival of SHP in all sports. Menlo, once an all-male prep school, has been admitting girls for about 30 years.

So Menlo School is just down from SHP and is actually in Atherton as well & not Menlo Park. It is a 6-12 school with approx. 230 in grades 6-8 and then 570 in grades 9-12. Tuition shown as $44,865 annually. At one time Menlo seemed to be producing some good FB teams such as SHP, but its been quite awhile since they fielded a really good team in the PAL. Perhaps the campus and SHP's success on the FB field including going to a state bowl game a few years ago has attracted any upcoming FB talent to SHP over Menlo School.

Menlo School and SHP are literally across the street (Emilie) from each other. Menlo's campus is quite large as the college is also located on the campus. The annual rivalry game is affectionately known as the BMW Bowl, but should be renamed the Tesla Bowl. Lol!
SHP has a promising soph qb, Price, that leads the team and a bruising RB in jr. Moimoi Coach Grieb has done a great job taking over from legendary coach, Pete Lavorato.

Ah, yes, SHP, Menlo and The King's Academy. They are football members of the PAL, much to the remorse of the league's public schools who would dearly love to see all three banished to the outer darkness, or at least a B Division of the WCAL or some other non-public arrangement. But, for now, that does not appear to be in the cards. The private/parochial threesome, by all rights, should be mandated to compete in the PAL Bay Division year in and year out. At least that's the view of more than a few public mentors who strongly believe that the trio has no place in the PAL in the first place.

Hmm, SHP, Menlo School & King's Academy in the mid-peninsula and S.I., SHC & Riordan in SF north. Perhaps like the PAL the strongest of these teams could be upgraded to the WCAL each season and the weakest teams demoted to one of the PAL divisions: Bay, Lake, Ocean. I would certainly be in favor of that arrangement with a team such as SHP and Riordan switching leagues for a season with a review at the end of each season. It would be an easy private for private switch though Gator parents likely would be opposed to their team facing SF, VC, Serra or a regular basis.

Well, add Palma or Marin Catholic for football only and you would have a 12-school WCAL with two divisions. MC, though, is not a member of CCS. Palma is.

Streaming Recap (in light of some of the scams on the internet):

Most schools avoid streaming CCS playoff games because the section charges a fairly high price for the rights.

KLIV 1590 AM carries one game a week during the CCS playoffs.

VC streams on the VCS Livestream but not any playoff games.
SHC uses SHCTV on Youtube but I have not seen any CCS playoff games there either.
SF uses NFHS Network and often does stream playoff games played at SF
Serra uses BAOSN.tv and does not stream CCS playoff games.
SI uses SI Sports Network on Youtube but no playoff games. (Eliminated)
Bellarmine occasionally streams regular season games on BCPTV on Youtube (has not qualified for playoff home games lately)
Mitty streams some games on AMHS Live on Youtube but not football playoff games.
Riordan does not stream on the internet but occasionally runs a radio broadcast.

The CCS will often stream games on the CCS NFHS Network Channel but those games can be snoozers (it seems like CCS doesn't look at the matchups). Note that all Finals are streamed on this channel. (PAID)

NorCal Bowl Games largely depend on who buys the rights from Spectrum.

State Finals (from Cerritos) are carried on NBC Sports Bay Area and NBC Sports California. Home site state finals are not.

The WCAL schools have been pushing SHP to join as a full member for years, but the Gators will not budge. They are only interested in playing WCAL teams in the sports they are dominant in.

WCAL Football 2018 - Upcoming CCS Semi-Final Games Review

Is there any game to get excited about this week after the blow-outs that took place last week? SF & VC are heavy favorites & I'm going with SHC Irish from SF in an upset over the SHP Gators Athertonians who are a TD favorite.
A few posters have expressed SF should still be cautious heading into the rematch with the Serra Padres, while I've stated previous Serra does not seem to match up position-wise with either SF or VC. Does anyone think Serra has a "sluggers chance" if the Padres can strike early? Perhaps a kick-off return, a long scoring pass play or SF turnover?
In the first meeting between the 2 teams Serra had poor early field position, turned the ball over and committed penalties falling behind early. In the 2nd 1/2 SF left no doubt as to the outcome with 2 long TD passes to Evan Williams which sent some Padre fans heading for the exit [Evan Williams had 3 TD receptions accounting for 1/2 of the Lancer's 42 points]. SF's replacement QB Daly performed superbly and SF has taken their offense up a notch with their 3 RB's and 3 good WR's & once again will be hard to stop. My prediction has SF by 3 TD's as I think this one will be a bit closer, but too much talent on both sides of the ball for SF. Are the MItty Monarch's doomed as well to repeat their first meeting loss of 27-0 against the VC Warrior's? Looking at the stats & scores SF is the most well balanced team of the WCAL and reason why they won the league title outright. Looking at offense & defense separately VC is the top defensive team of the league over the Lancers stout D. While both teams recorded a number of blow-out wins VC easily led the WCAL teams with 36 QB sacks over #2 SF with 21. Whichever Mitty QB who starts Bey or Murphy they'll need to somehow avoid the pressure VC is sure to bring and along with that possible turnovers.

With SHC vs SHP it will be the Irish D vs a potent Gator offense. While the 2 teams each feature a big play RB in Heard for SHC & Moimoi for SHP their rushing stats are about equal and under 100 yards per game. SHP holds the big advantage in scoring & passing yards with 44 TD's to 19 TD's. SHC has Levar Watkins as their go-to WR and GAtor's featured big play WR is Dante Cacchione. The SHC soph QB Dowling is completing 53% while SHP's Price is completing 60%. SHC will need to come out of the gates early on this SHP team and field position will be critical early on. If SHC can;t limit their 3 & out's of offense it will spell trouble for the Irish as they must keep the ball away from the Gator offense.

Palo Alto vs Menlo-Atherton should be a good game with M-A a slight favorite. Could M-A be the "sleeper" in the Div I Playoffs or could it be an early exit as in past years' for the M-A Bears? Wilcox at 11-0 is the #2 ranked team in CCS behind SF and has already beaten VC early on. The question is just how good is this Wilcox team and some say it is the best team Wilcox has produced in recent memory. Salinas has wins over both Palma & Aptos so this should be a good test for Wilcox. Palma vs Aptos is rated as a close contest with Aptos as a 1-point favorite however some fans seem to think Palma has the edge. Gonzales 11-0 vs Carmel 11-0 is always interesting to see 2 teams both unbeaten in the playoffs. In this game Carmel is a heavy favorite due to the incredibly weak schedule of Gonzales. Having said that, any time a team such as Gonzales is unbeaten they have to have something going for them. So it is "David" in Gonzales vs "Goliath" in Carmel, close contest or runaway?

Been to many football and basketball games at both SHP and Menlo and agree both are incredible campuses.

WCAL Football 2018 - CCS Playoff Games Streamed this Week

Not too many of these games available as the day/times/locations changing due to air quality/smoke.
I was however surprised that 2 games are being streamed by NFHSnetwork upcoming:

Serra vs St. Francis Friday 7:00 PM
Palo Alto vs Menlo-Atherton Saturday 1:00 PM

WCAL Football 2018 - Serra vs St. Francis Tonite Friday Nite Lites 7:00 PM @SF

So will the cold & wet weather play any significant factor in this evening's game? Usually the worse the weather the bigger the advantage to the defense and the team with the better run game. In both instances SF has both of these advantages already over the Padres. SF's stout D along with their 2 power RB's and shifty RB Bishop as well will be tough to stop behind SF's big OL in the muck. Throw in a slight home field advantage with an expected large Lancer crowd hoping for more of the same from the last game & Serra has its work cut out for this Padre team. With bad weather field position becomes critical and the all important kicking game will play a large role in this game IMO. Hopefully Serra's kicker Lewis has recovered from whatever injury recently hampered him as he'l be needed tonite. If SF wins tonite to make it 2 in a row over Serra it will be a bit of pay-back for 4 in a row by the Padres over the previous 2 seasons.
Here are the 3 games on at 7:00 PM on NFHSnetwork.com

SF 10-1 vs Serra 7-4 [SF ranked 33rd in state & Serra 81]

Inderkum 11-0 vs Central Catholic 10-1 [Inderkum ranked 25th in state & CC 36]

St. Mary's-Stockton 7-4 vs Folsom 10-1 St. Mary's ranked 71 in state & Folsom 7th]

After the Monach punt, Isaiah McElvane takes the first Warrior play 60 yards on the ground for a TD. PAT is good. VC 7 AM 0, 9:34 left in 1st Q.

Serra could not have had a worse start. Lancers march 60 yards after a good kickoff return and Serra could do nothing to stop them. Then after being stuffed & a 3 & out on 4th and 5 the Serra punter on a fake passes and misses a wide open Serra WR to turn the ball over to SF at Serra 35. Coach Walsh of Serra has proven to be a gambler in the past & take chances & we all know how that can turn off if you guess wrong. SF's Maurice Wilmar just caught a pass inside Serra red zone and no defender within 10 feet of him. While typing this post SF scored on next play. Game could get out of hand as Sera's D being exposed as swiss cheese. SF is def not Leland Serra..

Serra's kicker/DB Lewis had an emergency appendectomy yesterday. He is out of the hospital, but, obviously, isn't playing tonight.

[QUOTE="SacCoachA, post: 217415, member: 1854"]Serra's kicker/DB Lewis had an emergency appendectomy yesterday. He is out of the hospital, but, obviously, isn't playing tonight.[/QUOTE]

Thanks for update & too bad Serra coulda used him as kicker & DB. Serra finally gets a break & field position & needs to take advantage of it. Whatever happened to Serra's hybrid double-wing to mix things up? Do they just have the one RB Sanchez and that's it?

I could not see fully what happened but apparently Bottari fumbled at the goal line & SF recovered.

One thing is abundantly clear. The Serra D-Coordinator has the Padres jumping all over the place prior to snap to realign, but it is def not working. There are 5-6 Padre defenders trying to realign to counter SF's anticipated plays and no one seems set when the snap occurs. The SF RB's are running through gaping holes you could drive a truck through.
Another score by SF and another WR wide open on a post route.

Serra needs a big play and quick!

Game got ugly in 2nd 1/2 with turnovers by Serra & SF taking full advantage. Loss of Serra's O & D coordinator's a much bigger deal than originally thought. Serra's all time passing leader Bottari had a dreadful night fumbling on goal lime for one 14-point swing & throwing into heavy coverage for several INT's of which at least one led to a score. As I just check back into game Serra rolls the ball back to the punter getting him tackled 10-yards behind LOS for a big loss & SF takes over again deep in Serra territory. This is much how the entire game went.
"A great team makes a good team look bad and a bad team makes a better team look great" and I think that pretty much sums up this game. With weeks to prepare & game ends' much like the first as predicted. Memories of "The Curse" will almost certainly haunt me tonite along with other Serra alumni ..

Rather unusual event in Serra St Francis game. The parent of a player stuck his head into the press box DURING THE GAME where the coaches were also sitting and told a coach to play his son more. The senior player never touched the ball again. Career over. This isn't a rumor. It was confirmed by people in the press box.

You missed the "other Liberty" (Bakersfield). They fall between St. Francis and Central Catholic.

Although, I understand if you don't consider Bakersfield to be "NorCal", even though all of CS D-I, D-II, and D-III are considered NorCal by the CIF (at least this year).

The "revolving door" continues. No matter who the new coach & assistants are the same results will continue unless the administration backs them 100% and is committed to a winning program. In other speak - the administration has to adapt a "winning attitude" instead of a "who cares about football anyway" attitude...

I agree there is talent there under the right coaching along & administration - please see SHP for role model in this category..

SHP spends tons of money on its football program, from facilities and equipment to coaching salaries and benefits. It's not a model that Riordan can duplicate. Riordan simply doesn't have the oodles of cash SHP can throw at an athletic endeavor.

WCAL Football 2018 - CCS Div Championship Games being streamed tonite & Saturday

I've looked but not finding anything available as of yet for the SF-VC rematch tomorrow nite at 7:00 PM at Independence High in San Jose. A highly anticipated rematch with the first meeting ending in a 7-3 SF win.
Too far for most to drive to so you'd think they could at least stream for the majority of fans who cannot make the game live [does that make any sense?].

The other "really good game" unless everyone is wrong will be 1-2 Menlo-Atherton vs 13-0 undefeated Wilcox.
Game is being steamed at 7:00 PM on NFHSnetwork.com https://www.nfhsnetwork.com/explore/upcoming

We know Wilcox defeated VC early on by 10-6 so tonite we find out how good M-A is with their #1 QB back & healthy.
VC's 2 losses on the season to Wilcox & SF were by 10-6 and 7-3 or a combined 8 points. So will the VC-SF game be another defensive struggle of bend, but don't break of will one team come out and strike quickly to gain the first advantage? SF's using their "other" #2 QB who took over mid-season and will be the X-Factor in this game. SF's offense seems to be playing their best ball of the season and may surprise VC this time around. VC the #1 D in WCAL did not allow SF offense to score last game other than the gift of an INT deep in the VC red zone. Will VC's D prove they're the best by shutting down the Lancers tomorrow nite?
