CCS public school rankings

Aptos lost to St. Ignatius by 21, plays Mitty tonight and Presentation next Friday. I would think a win over Presentation would be a necessity, and probably a good showing against Mitty.

So far in CCS, it does not appear to be a banner season for the publics. Only Aptos and maybe Los Altos show some signs of being above the public crowd. The issue is the Open Division bracket in March. We know that at least six private/parochials will be slotted in the Open. That's a given. So who will fill out the bracket? Every year, at least one public becomes a sacrificial lamb in the Open.

It could be Sacramento, though calling that magnet school a "public school" is a bit of a stretch. If Heritage beats Carondelet in NCS D1, or Miramonte beats Bishop O'Dowd in NCS D2, either or both could wind up in the Open.

Folsom is another possibility, along with McClatchy. Oakland and San Ramon Valley have an outside shot as well.

Sorry. We are talking about the CCS Open Division only, not NorCals. A CCS public in NorCals is a huge stretch for sure. Almost certainly will not happen.

Ranking the top ten CCS public schools this week is very hard because too many have not updated their records. But, regardless of the hideous loss to Mitty, Aptos remains No.1. After that, we'll to wait for some win-loss marks to be updated.

That 58-point Aptos loss to Mitty puts the stark difference between CCS publics and private/parochials in grim capital letters. The yawning deficit between the two top teams in their categories is so wide you have to wonder if placing a public school (or two) in the CCS Open Division tourney makes much sense at all in 2019.

I'm sure there are plenty that would love to be in the open div. Its an auto-bid to norcals where they "should" be placed according to strength. Ask aragon if they would have liked to make the open last year? Making the open, both the CCS and/or the Norcal open, should be accomplishment in itself and people are losing sight of that

CCS Public School - Love me some Tigers in Pacifica! Sequoia is my public school sleeper they play at nice controlled pace you can even get to the snack bar and back before they shoot! Years of coaching on that bench (Burlingame) the only public to ever win was coached by coach Steve!

Dec. 18

Let's give it another try with more teams providing results.

1. Aptos 6-2
2. Los Altos 7-1
3. Palo Alto 4-2
4. Aragon 4-4
5. Seaside 6-1
6. Soquel 5-3
7. Sequoia 6-2
8. Mills 6-2
9. Wilcox 7-1
10. Salinas 6-2

Others considered: North Salinas, Leland, Carlmont, Piedmont Hills

Feel free to chime in.

Piedmont hills beat los altos which just shows how much parity there is here among these schools. Really hard to rank them. Trying to get my CCS knowledge up this year.

Yes. Los Altos beat both Palo Alto and Aragon as well. But lots of parity among CCS publics. Only Aptos, despite that 58-point thrashing by Mitty, appears to be a pretty clear No.1 right now. And, in truth, the SOS factor varies enormously among these teams. Some have not played a strong private/parochial. Others have not played even a strong public.

There is a school of thought out there in the CCS wilderness that goes something like this: The top private/parochials are so dominant, so unbeatable by the publics, that it makes little or no sense for the publics to even schedule them at all. Better, runs the logic, to play only publics if at all possible and let the kids have some success, or failure, on a level playing field. It's that bad in this section. The Aptos vs. Mitty result would seem to put an exclamation point on that view. The better publics aren't horrible. But they are utterly eclipsed by the private/parochials in every way imaginable on a depressingly regular basis.

Wilcox problem: Mills beat them rather easily. And Sequoia did the same to Mills and Soquel handled Sequoia. Hence the Wilcox slippage in our pseudo-rankings.

Sequoia 39-10 over Menlo-Atherton after three periods tonight in Atherton. Bears scored four points over a 21-minute span vs. Sequoia matchup zone.

Add Leland to the public school rankings with close losses to St. Francis, Cal High, Wilcox in OT, and Valley Christian and all without their best player who will be eligible some time in January. They have definitely challenged themselves and played a tough schedule for a public in CCS.

Who would you drop out of the top ten? Many schools have transfers coming on line in January, not just Leland by the way.

Drop N. Salinas, independence, soquel
Soquel lucky win vs sequioa doesn't put them in. Aptos is way better than soquel. Lynbrook and Los Gatos are better than soquel and independence and possibly Saratoga is too. N. Salinas and every other team in that league is weak until they come beat a top team from scval or bval or pal

Thanks for your thoughts. Regarding Soquel, they beat Sequoia fair and square. They led throughout on a neutral floor. The final score is what it is. We can't disregard it on a purely subjective basis. One thing seems clear at this point: Aptos remains the best public school outfit in CCS, regardless of record. As for the rest, well, it's something of a crapshoot. Mills just handled Aragon on the latter's floor, as an example. One more thing: Not all schools have provided updated records and scores. That doesn't help.

North Salinas and Independence are not ranked.

If there was a public school open division. Give me 1 thru 8. I think that would be an exciting tournament.

CCS - should have a private open division and a public open. It would make for competitive balance

Thanks for doing this ...

Aptos had originally signed up for the Jamboree but opted not to come -- it would have given them a good chance to play against teams outside CCS.

The WCJ is a laudable undertaking that is both wide in scope and equitable in competition. Thanks again for all of the work that's required to put on this annual event. And Merry Christmas.

I would put 2. Mills, 3. Wilcox, 4. Leland 5. Sequioa 6. Los Altos 7. Seaside 8. Palo Alto 9. Aragon 10. S. San Fran 11.Carlmont 12. Saratoga 13. Lynbrook 14 Soquel 15. Sobrato

Yes, It's Christmas Bonus Time

How about a CCS private/parochial top ten to satisfy your yen for holiday hoops? Here it is (think of it as an early CCS Open Division ranking as well):

1. Pinewood
2. Mitty
3. Sacred Heart Cathedral
4. St. Ignatius
5. Menlo School
6. St. Francis
7. Woodside Priory
8. Sacred Heart Prep

Discuss. Talk among yourselves. Have a great holiday season. Behave.

I believe Notre Dame Belmont beat Woodside Priory on Saturday.
