CCS Proposed changes

This first round of proposals and changes have been presented by the Football Sports Committee. As expected, the committee looked at the CCS PowerPoints more closely. They added some proposed recommendations to help the PowerPoints to be more fairly generated. The committee also more carefully defined the at-large qualifiers.

Proposals #1, 2,and 3 will be presented for discussion as a first read item at the CCS Board of Managers meeting January 26, 2022. Second reading and action is expected by the CCS Board Of Managers Meeting on March 30, 2022.

II. RECOMMENDATIONS
1. Thank you to Sequoia High School and Westmont High School for hosting the CCS Football Finals.
2. CCS Staff work and find larger facilities to hold events that will have a foreseeable crowd.
3. The Committee provided suggestion regarding sites for future CCS finals and would like to entertain the idea of having a list of potential venues that have increased capacity.
4. Create a small ad hoc committee to examine the current Power Point structure.

IV. REPORT ON PROPOSED MAJOR FORMAT CHANGES
PROPOSAL #1
: When calculating points (CCS Power Points) for playing an opponent, a team may only count “League Champion” points once in a case where a team plays an opponent more than once in any season.
Rationale: The current CCS Power Point structure allows for a team that plays the same team more than once, the opportunity to accumulate playing a league champion multiple times. In 2021, two teams earned 2 points for a playing the same league champion (one point for each game), while the league champion only earned 1.5 points for being the league champion.

PROPOSAL #2: Amend the current language in the CCS bylaws to read, “Maximum Number of Qualifiers: No more than six (6) teams from each league division can be considered nominated for the tournament.”
Rationale: The current process for the selection of at large qualifiers allows a league to submit more that their allowed number of entrants. This re-wording of the bylaw would allow for clarity on which teams may be on the board.

PROPOSAL #3: Alter the CCS Power Points as follows:
• Award 2.0 1.5 points for playing a team ranked in the Calpreps.com top 100 teams in California** (as listed one hour at 8am prior to the on the day of the seeding meeting
• Award 1.0 point for playing a team ranked in the Calpreps.com top 101-150 teams in California** (as listed one hour at 8am prior to the on the day of the seeding meeting)
• Award 1.5 points for being a team ranked in the Calpreps.com top 100 teams in California** (as listed at 8am on the day of the seeding meeting)
• Award 1.0 points for being a team ranked in the Calpreps.com top 100 teams in California** (as listed at 8am on the day of the seeding meeting)

Rationale: The football committee recommends that the point structure be slightly altered in the awarding of points for playing a team in the Cal Preps top 100, as well as adding points to teams that have reached that level. Currently, a team that is ranked in the Cal Preps top 100 receives no additional points, but their opponents do.

Northern CA in NFL Draft

For the first time since 2013 there were no Northern/Central California High School players selected in the first round of the NFL draft (I counted five from Southern CA). Looking at various prospect lists it looks like only one former NorCal prep player might be selected in day 2 (Carson Strong from Wood-Vacaville/Nevada).

Maxpreps published a great list of where all the the NFL draft picks over the last 10 years went to high school. Some tidbits I found interesting:

Over the last decade California ranked fourth in the number of first round picks with 26 players (Florida-44, Texas -38, and Georgia -30 were ranked higher than California). Of the 26 first round California picks from 2012-2021, 16 were from Northern/Central CA (counting everything north of the Grapevine) and 10 from Southern CA. Interestingly enough none of these first round picks came from perennial powers Mater Dei, Centennial or De La Salle and one came from from St John Bosco.

California ranked third in overall draft picks from 2012-2021 with 257 behind Texas with 284 and Florida with 326. Of the 257 from California 161 were from Southern CA and 96 from Northern/Central CA.

For reference CA has a population of 39.5 million (24 million in Southern CA and 15.5 million in Central/Northern CA) Texas has 29 million people. Florida has 21.5 million, and Georgia has 11 million.

The Way Back Machine

When the 49ers selected a relatively unknown offensive lineman from Fordham late in the NFL draft this weekend, it stirred a reflection on some ancient NorCal college football history. Fordham hasn't been a big-time gridiron standout for many decades. But there was a time when the Rams were a stellar attraction on the East Coast. And one Bay Area school, St. Mary's, made it a point to challenge the Rams on their own turf in the Big Apple during the Depression. Under the wildly innovative tutelage of coach/promoter/ring master Slip Madigan, the Gaels became a powerhouse in the 1930s. Their annual raucous, boozy week-long rail trip to New York City for their confrontation with Fordham became the stuff of legend. Madigan and his Gaels didn't disappoint. They were successful more often than not. Both schools were great examples of small-enrollment Catholic colleges who could compete on the big stage during that era before the rise of the NFL, TV, Twitter and Instagram. All of that was pretty much over early in the 1950s. The financial landscape had changed. Schools like Fordham, St. Mary's and others (Santa Clara, USF, Gonzaga, Loyola, Marquette, etc.) all ended their big-time football efforts in one way or another. Their budgets could not compete with larger schools. Packed crowds at old Kezar Stadium for Sunday afternoon contests involving Bay Area Catholic schools disappeared as the 49ers took over that weekend venue. It was a much different time. The last great team from that genre was USF's unbeaten, untied and uninvited 1951 outfit. The Dons dropped the sport after that campaign. It was the final nail in the Catholic football coffin.

Folsom (King of NorCal) Schedule

Knew the headline would get cha! :)

Folsom comes into 2022 with a strong non-league schedule in Serra, Pitt, and DLS. Wins against all three Bay Area teams would put them in the drivers seat for another title run this year.

The 2022 squad is likely better than the 2021 squad. We've seen a lot of Folsom/DLS in the past and probably know what it looks like at this point. I am very intrigued to see the match up against Serra in the 1st game this year on the famous blue turf in beautiful Folsom.

Who's ready!?

BTW- Just re-watched the Folsom win over DLS playoff game from last year. Still proud of the Bulldogs for dominating both sides of the ball in a game AT DLS. I think it was the turning point in the program.

SJS Notes from May 2

St. Mary's beat Lincoln-Stockton 8-4: Ryan Guidi got the win and Caleb Velo had a home run and three RBI.

Folsom beat Rocklin 8-1: Adam Cafarella had a home run and Matthew Gallant threw a complete game.

Granite Bay beat Del Oro 7-2: Jacob Garcia had three RBI and Kevin MacIntosh had two RBI for the Grizzlies.

Whitney beat Oak Ridge 2-1: Tyler Allen went 3-for-4 with a double and Jace Gillmore threw a complete game, five-hitter. Brent Jones gave up two unearned runs over 6.1 innings for the Trojans.

Advice/Venting - Section 7

So we have been trying to get into the Section 7 the last 2 years. Most importantly this summer. I cant get a return call/email from director King. I know its about who you know but i see teams going and I know that we are better than some teams that will be there. I have at least 3 kids that are getting recruited but I cannot get a invite. I would like to think that the Section 7 was made for NON- National HS teams that have HS players get seen but if we keep getting overlooked by the schools with the "BIG" name how do teams/programs like us get into the scene to compete and be seen?

Sincerely,

A Frustrated Coach (LOL)
