JV team needed Feb. 1 and 8

We need one more JV team to participate in our end-of-season, two-game tournament, Feb. 1 and 8.

We have 11 teams now, and the goal is to have three four-team brackets that will play Feb. 1 and 8 at Carondelet. The 12 teams will be seeded by the participating coaches into the three brackets, with the top four teams in one bracket, and so on.

If you can only play one of the dates, we might make that work.

Suggestions for Modifying CCS Play-off rules

CCS play-off projections with four weeks to go

Here are the CCS Play-off projections with four weeks left in the season. Barring an upset where one of these teams’ losses to someone other than those in the Open/D1 division, this field looks set although seedings could change. Dropped from D4 to D5 as all C league teams must be in D5.

WCAL

Top four automatic qualifiers will go to St. Ignatius, St. Francis and Valley Christian. Riordan and Sacred Heart Cathedral will likely get two at -large bids. Winner of round robin between league’s 3 3-0 teams Si, VC and St. Francis will get at least a share of the title. Big game this coming week is SI vs St. Francis.

PAL-Bay

Los Gatos is a prohibitive favorite to win this league outright already having defeated Menlo-Atherton. This league gets five automatic berths and Menlo-Atherton, Wilcox, Menlo School, and Palo Alto based on their win this week over Sacred Heart Prep figure to get the other spots. Sacred Heart Prep is currently projected to get the final at-large berth even if it losses its remaining games.

Gabilan

Soquel will be favored to win the league championship when they face-off with Salinas on the road on 11-01. A remarkable ascent for a team that played in a C league in 2018 and a B league in 2022. They are projected to end up as the #2 public school in the CCS. Salinas, Hollister and Monterey are in line to win the other three automatic berths and Palma and Aptos will likely get at-large berths.

Mount Hamilton

Christopher has already beaten the next two highest ranked league opponents Santa Teresa and Branham and should cruise to a league championship. Santa Teresa, Branham and Live Oak should get the last three automatic spots. Lincoln and Leigh are unlikely to get an at-large berth.

PAL-Deanza

This A league gets three automatic berths. Burlingame is favored to win this league with Capuchino and Hillsdale projected to get the other two berths. Kings Academy is projected as fourth and will not get an at-larger spot.

PAL Ocean

Half Moon Bay is a strong favorite to win the league outright and finish the season 10-0 with A league wins over Burlingame, Hillsdale and Sacred Heart Prep. Half Moon Bays power point projections would place them in the middle of D2 but the new CCS rules will drop them to D3 for the play-offs. San Mateo is projected for second ahead of Carlmont and Milpitas (they have beaten both teams). Carlmontis on the bubble for an at-large berth and is currently projected to get edged out by Sacred Heart Prep.

Mission South

Carmel is a prohibitive favorite win this league and finish 10-0 with wins over A league teams Christopher and Monterey. Despite being currently ranked the 9th in the CCS and having the 9th most points the new CCS play-off rules will place them in D3. North Salinas is a strong favorite to get the second spot from this league already having beaten Pacific Grove which is projected for third. Due to their weak schedule Pacific Grove is unlikely to get an at-large spot.

Mission North

With their win over Alisal this week, North Monterey County is a strong favorite to win this league. Alisal and St. Francis figure to contend for the second automatic berth. No one from this league will be strong enough to get an at-large berth.

Valley

With their win over Sobrato this week, Willow Glen should finish 10-0 and win the league outright. Sobrato is a heavy favorite over Leland to capture the second play-off spot.

Foothill

Piedmont Hills is projected as a strong favorite to win this league over Pioneer and Overfelt. Pioneer is projected to get the second automatic berth over Overfelt.

El Camino

The championship should be decided in this weeks game between Woodside at South San Francisco with the loser likely to get the second play-off spot from this league.

Santa Lucia

San Lorenzo Valley is a strong favorite to finish 10-0 and get this C league’s only play-off berth. Stevenson is projected as the second place team from this league.

Lake

This will be an extremely competitive league between Gunn, Jefferson and Saratoga. The winner of the round robin will likely win the league and if they all end up 1-1 the winner will likely be whoever wins the Jefferson vs Gunn game as Saratoga has a tie in league against Monta Vista. Gunn is a slight favorite to end 10-0 and has only given up one touchdown through 6 games.

West Valley

This week’s game between Gunderson and Evergreen Valley will likely determine the league championship and who will be the league’s paly-off representative.

The Spartans are the No. 1 seed in the Open Division and will host San Marin in the first round.

2. Folsom (9-1)

Coming off a first round bye in the SJS Division I playoffs, Folsom will host Downey in a matchup of two of the most productive quarterbacks in the section with Folsom’s Ryder Lyons and Downey’s Carson Lamb.

3. Pittsburg (9-1)

11 different players got a carry and seven different players had a catch in Pittsburg’s 57-16 win over Antioch. 5. St. Mary’s-Stockton (8-2)

The Rams are moving into the Top 20 following last week’s loss by St. Francis to Riordan and the fact St. Mary’s has a win over Marin Catholic and played De La Salle tougher than anyone else thus far. This week, they start the SJS Division II playoffs against Vacaville.

6. St. Francis-Mountain View (8-2)

Despite the 34-24 loss to Riordan, St. Francis enters the CCS playoffs as our top rated team in the section with a share of the WCAL title and the only WCAL program to beat a fellow WCAL ranked program on the road. In last week’s loss to the Crusaders, Kingston Keanaaina returned a kickoff for a score and quarterback Aaron Knapp threw for a touchdown and ran for another. The Lancers are the No. 2 seed in the CCS Open Division playoffs and host Valley Christian this week.

7. St. Ignatius (8-2)

St. Ignatius will take a three game winning streak into the CCS Open Division playoffs after beating Mitty 24-19. The Wildcats, who are the No. 1 seed, will host Salinas. In the regular season, St. Ignatius was 5-0 in one possession games.

8. Grant (7-3)

As the No. 3 seed in the SJS Division II playoffs, Grant will take on Jesuit in the quarterfinals in a matchup of two of the most storied programs in the Sac-Joaquin Section.

9. Oak Ridge (6-4)

The Trojans had an off week after their win over Rocklin to end the regular season. They return to the field on Friday when they host Monterey Trail in the SJS Division I quarterfinals.

10. Rocklin (8-2)

Rocklin is the top seed in the SJS Division II playoffs and will host Elk Grove on Friday. The Thunder have only allowed more than 21 points twice this year (Turlock and Folsom).

11. Riordan (6-4)

Mike Mitchell Jr. threw for 178 yards and three touchdowns and added a go ahead rushing score in the fourth quarter en route to a 34-24 win over St. Francis. Chris Lawson added a touchdown catch and an interception. Riordan is the No. 3 seed in the CCS Division I playoffs and will take on Soquel this week.

12. Los Gatos (8-2)

Grayson Doslak rushed for 137 yards and three touchdowns and Scotty Brennan found Owen Patu for a touchdown as Los Gatos beat Palo Alto 44-6. The win was spurred by a 30 point second quarter. Los Gatos will travel to Serra this week in a 4-5 matchup in the CCS Division I playoffs.

13. Soquel (8-2)

Soquel has won eight in a row after shutting out Aptos 45-0. Tyreis Lundy and Keyandre Bailey each rushed for more than 100 yards and Sam Whelan tossed three touchdowns. The Knights are giving up less than 10 points per game this season heading into the CCS Division I opener against Riordan.

14. Marin Catholic (8-2)

Jarred Geisberger scored the game winning touchdown in the fourth quarter as the Wildcats beat Windsor 24-21 to secure an outright league title. Marin Catholic, which went 6-0 on the road in the regular season, will be at home to start the NCS Division I playoffs on Saturday against Cardinal Newman.

15. Manteca (9-1)

Manteca, which only has a one point loss to Marin Catholic on its loss ledger, will host undefeated Rodriguez in the SJS Division II playoffs.

16. Serra (5-5)

Nano Latu had a touchdown run and a touchdown catch and the Padres’ defense held Valley Christian in check throughout the night with a 29-3 win. Serra gets a home game to start the CCS Division I playoffs against Los Gatos on Saturday.

17. Cardinal Newman (9-1)

Cardinal Newman held Vintage to 154 yards in a 33-0 shutout win. It is the third time this year that the Cardinals have held an opponent to three points or less. They will get a rematch against the only team to beat them, Marin Catholic, in the NCS Division I playoffs.

18. Salinas (8-2)

Bouncing back from its loss to Soquel, Salinas ended the regular season with a 31-14 win over Hollister. Rico Maturino threw for 286 yards and three touchdowns as head coach Steve Zenk earned career win No. 100. Next up is the CCS Open Division opener against top seed St. Ignatius.

19. Valley Christian (5-5)

Dealing with injuries to its running backs, Valley Christian’s failed to score an offensive touchdown in a 29-3 loss at Serra. The Warriors have lost three straight heading into the postseason, where they will face St. Francis-Mountain View.

20. Wilcox (8-2)

Wilcox got 105 yards and four touchdowns in a 30-21 win over Menlo-Atherton to get the outright league title. The game was tied at 21 entering the fourth quarter. Wilcox is the top seed in the CCS Division II playoffs and will face Santa Teresa.

97th Little Big Game

San Mateo dominated Burlingame, 35-10, Saturday in the 97th Little Big Game. The 25-point margin was San Mateo's largest since 1985. The Bearcats, 8-2, used a physical rushing attack to wear down the Panthers, 6-4, on the losers' field. The visitors attempted one pass; it was incomplete. Burlingame still leads in the ancient series between Peninsula Athletic League neighbors, 59-34-4.Both teams are projected to be participants in the upcoming Central Coast Section playoffs.

What happen to “selection show” for football brackets

We have enough media to do this and cover it. I think it was prior to COVID but for sure NCS did it. Kids could have team watch parties

My NCS solution… take 4 top teams in Open.. winner is open, runner up D1, play out 3rd place game winner is D2. Other 40 spots D3-D7 go to next ranked teams in order, only guaranteed qualifier is league champ. This would allow best 3 teams in section to represent and have stronger teams representing other divisions

Serra looks to build momentum heading into the playoffs

Serra once again relied on the playmaking of Nano Latu (touchdown run and touchdown catch) as they scored on their first three possessions to beat Valley Christian 29-3 and end the regular season at 5-5. The Padres, which have a win over Folsom and one possession losses at St. Ignatius, St. Francis and Riordan, look to control the ball with its ground game and a defense that can play fast and physical at times.

Valley Christian on the other hand dealt with injuries to their top two runners in the regular season finale, according to the San Jose Mercury News, which really limited their offense. After a slow start on defense, they played better as the night wore on. However, the Warriors will enter the CCS playoffs on a three game losing streak.

Matchups will determine a lot in a parity filled CCS, but after Friday night, it looks like Serra's arrow is pointing up and Valley Christian's is pointing down.
