UConn vs. USC

Oh, my. Huskies were ripe for the picking. Trojans were favored with a bigger, deeper roster, primed to advance. Instead, zippo. Still unsure what SC was trying to do on offense. Disjointed. Confused. Unforced turnovers. Bad shot selection. Failure to pound the post. Poorly prepared for a half-court grinder. Score one for Geno and his gritty bunch. Last call for the old Pac-12. Not good.

Ending a CCS public school streak

It's been 36 years since a CCS public school girls' basketball won (or even played for) a CIF state title in any division, equity-based, enrollment-based, whatever. Is this the year that drought ends? The indications are not encouraging. The best of the 2024 bunch, Los Gatos, has been slotted into NorCal Division I. The competition from the private/parochials there will be fierce. Same goes for several other public contenders like Everygreen Valley and Branham in divisions just below I. But Lynbrook of San Jose has been shunted all the way down to Division 5. Now we're talking. Lynbrook could do some damage down there in the depths of the bottom (worst) bracket. They are 18-9 playing in a strong CCS public school league where they finished 7-5. They are an at-large NorCal selection. They might be the best hope to end that depressing CCS public bagel that began during the Reagan Administration. Fingers crossed.

Specialization vs. Multiple Sports Athlete

I was conversing with someone today about kids who specialize early vs. those who are multi-sports athletes. The conversation started because, in the chronicle today, there's a 14- to 15-year-old kid from the Bay Area kid named McKenna Whitham who signed a professional contract with Gotham FC (NWSL team). In the article, she said she had been playing since she was 4 years old and "training" since she was 6. We all know (or should know) what the studies say about specialization and how it can lead to burnout/injuries if they start at young ages, but yet we see the trend more and more in sports like basketball and soccer. Can you name the last multi-sport athlete who attended a power-5 conference out of high school? Should athletes specialize to get the ultimate prize of a scholarship?

St. Marys vs. Grand Canyon

The St. Mary's vs. Grand Canyon 1st Round NCAA tourney game should be a fun one. Both teams have Kids with Bay Area ties. Obviously Aidan Mahaney for the Gaels and Jovan Blacksher Jr. PG of GCU is originally from Oakland. I've watched both kids since they were 10yrs old. Blacksher is a former WAC Tourney MVP with NCAA Tourney experience. The Gaels better be careful!!
