CalPreps Predictions points to CCS Playoff parity - Maybe?

This morning as I surveyed the major collapse in the WCAL playoff team success, I also noticed a number of upsets in other divisions in the CCS playoff field. This led me to explore all the sections and their upset factor, if you will, according to Calpreps predictions. What i can see suggests to a strong CCS parity and also a very weak NS section parity. The alternative option of thinking is that certain sections had strange anomalies from other sections.

The supposition I am using is that the more parity a section uses in its seeding teams and divisions for playoffs, the more likely one will see upset games. I am calling an upset where Calpreps predicted a win and the opposing team won instead. Here what I see so far, starting with the SJS section first since they started their playoff rounds last week.

SJS had 28 games in their first round with 4 games going opposite to CP prediction - 14% upset factor.
SJS had 25 games in their second round with 3 games going opposite to CP prediction - 12% upset factor.

NS had 12 games in their first round with 0 games going opposite to CP prediction - 0% upset factor.

NCS had 22 games in their first round with 3 games going opposite to CP prediction - 14% upset factor. One more game is scheduled for today.

CCS had 18 games in their first round with 9 games going opposite to CP prediction - 50% upset factor.

This likely suggests a very strong parity for the CCS seeding process and an extremely non-parity seeding for the NS section.

The NS section moved away from a Calpreps seeding model to a strict enrollment criteria for divisions and a win'loss quotient for seeding. This process created the least parity among teams.

The CCS section is the far end of the spectrum from the seeding process used in NS section.

The SJS and the NCS sections are somewhere in the middle leaning toward the very predictable NS section model. We know both of these sections use enrollment as a major criteria for division placement along with varying criteria for strength factors. So I wonder if we want very predictable playoffs or playoffs where the winner is in question.

Or maybe CCS is simply an anomaly this year?

Oklahoma State lands Serra QB

Serra 2024 quarterback Maealiuaki Smith (6-foot-4, 205 pounds) is one of the top senior recruits in the region and has helped lead the Padres to an 11-0 mark and a spot in the CCS Open Division title game.

On Sunday, he committed to Oklahoma State in giving the Cowboys one of the top signal callers on the West Coast.

Smith has good footwork and mobility within the pocket to shift away from pressure. He has a quick release and has shown accuracy to all levels.

Smith should be in the mix for some playing time in the first year or two in Stillwater.

PCAL Playoffs and Season recap

PCAL PLAYOFFS

As a whole the PCAL did not fair well in their playoff seedings. Instead of playing in Divisions II-V, all PCAL teams were placed in DI-DIV. And most did not get favorable seeds. As only 3 of the 11 qualifying teams earned a home game. And 2 of those are hosting other PCAL teams. But as noted in other Posts the CCS playoff system can sometimes be just weird. Carmel in DII while Palma and Hollister in DIII? Best chances at a CCS title…nobody. A PCAL team will not be favored in any division. I would give Salinas a fighting chance if they drew the #7 seed or above in DI/Open. Soquel-Carmel winner will have to get by Mitty in DII. DIII, Alisal and the Palma/Hollister winner has Menlo Atherton hanging around. And in DIV Palo Alto will be the favorite. I am not saying that upsets won’t happen, just saying I do not see any PCAL teams being a favorite an any of the divisions. As afar as next year, if they keep the same format look for Carmel to move up to the Gabilan, Alvarez to move down to Mission North, Santa Cruz to move down to the Santa Lucia and Greenfield to move up into the Mission South.

Gabilan

Final standings

  • Salinas
  • Soquel
  • Monterey
  • Palma
  • Hollister
  • Aptos
  • Alvarez
My Predictions

  • Salinas (CA)
  • Palma (Salinas, CA)
  • Aptos (CA)
  • Hollister (CA)
  • Monterey (CA)
  • Soquel (CA)
  • Alvarez (CA)
Gabilan was much closer top to bottom this year than in previous years. Not necessarily better. Yes, Salinas still went through undefeated but game were closer, and for all that effort it was awarded a #8 seed in DI vs CCS bully Serra. Soquel had a great year, and I did pick them to be out of the race, but in my defense, I was not aware that all the Santa Cruz team had transferred there. Palma had the 3 forfeits losses, but they still managed to regroup and beat the teams they had to in order to secure their 38 year playoff streak. This streak started when only 2 teams went to the playoffs from each league, it is pretty amazing. Monterey showed they belonged with their athleticism, but they were beat up a few times as well. Aptos was probably the biggest disappointment; it will be interesting to see how this program fairs with Blankenship retiring. Alvarez had a great victory over Hollister, but I see them getting put down to the B leagues next year.

Playoffs:

Fri 11/10 Palma (Salinas, CA) vs Hollister (CA) at Salinas Sports Complex (Salinas, CA), 7:00pm CCS DIII Playoffs- Part of a Friday night Double header at Rabobank stadium in Salinas. These 2 long time rivals meet again after their thrilling 31-30 battle in week 6. Palma won on 2 pt conversion, look for this game to go down to the wire as well. Hollister get their revenge. Hollister 35-34

Fri 11/10 Carmel (CA) at Soquel (CA), 7:00pm CCS DII Playoffs –
For long time south CCS fans, it makes no sense to have Soquel and Carmel in DII while Palma and Hollister are in DIII. But in todays bizzarro playoff world that’s where we are at. Soquel has a great defense and I has been bolstered by the Santa Cruz additions. Carmel has the top offense in the whole area. Soquel will do what they do best long, sustained drives and try to keep Carmel O off the field. Call me crazy, but I like the upset here, Carmel gets Soquel into a shootout. Carmel 45-42

Sat 11/11 Monterey (CA) at Sacred Heart Prep (Atherton, CA), 1:00pm CCS DII Playoffs
– Monterey likes to win games with speed and Athleticism. SHP look like they have some speed and athleticism of their own. I just don’t know if Monterey can play mistake free football. SHP 31-24

Sat 11/11 Salinas (CA) at Serra (San Mateo, CA), 1:00pm CCS Open Playoffs
– I would give Salinas a fighting chance vs anyone else in this bracket including St. Francis. But not vs Serra. Serra 49-7

Mission North

Final Standings

  • Scotts Valley (CA)
  • Seaside (CA)
  • Monte Vista Christian (Watsonville, CA)
  • Watsonville (CA)
  • North Monterey County (Castroville, CA)
  • St. Francis (Watsonville, CA
  • Santa Cruz (CA)

My Predictions

  • Scotts Valley (CA)
  • Seaside (CA)
  • St. Francis (Watsonville, CA)
  • Monte Vista Christian (Watsonville, CA)
  • Santa Cruz (CA)
  • Watsonville (CA)
  • North Monterey County (Castroville, CA)
Mission North played out more or less as predicted. Scott’s valley was the #1 team by long shot, with Seaside holding off North Monterey County. Santa Cruz was the biggest “miss”, as their program was gutted buy transfers. They only played 6 games and were forced to forfeit 4 other due to low numbers. They will probably be placed in the Santa Lucia next year. NMC was the biggest “surprise” as they were able to be very competitive and almost overtake Seaside for 2nd place. They did suffer an upset last week to Watsonville. I see this division remaining basically the same with the addition of Greenfield or Alvarez to replace Santa Cruz.

Fri 11/10 Scotts Valley (CA) at Aragon (San Mateo, CA), 7:00pm -CCS DIII Playoffs- I like this match up for Scott’s Valley. Aragon has a tough defense, so points will be at a premium. I think SV will be able to stop Aragon and score enough points to win. Scott’s Valley 14-7

Fri 11/10 Seaside (CA) at Palo Alto (CA), 7:00pm CCS DIV Playoffs-
I don’t really like this matchup for Seaside. This will be a rematch form last year’s D V championship. Congratulations to Palo Alto for playing in A league and being moved up to D IV for this years playoffs. Sarcasm aside, Seaside has some explosiveness on offense, but big physical team tend to wear them down due to lack of depth. Palo Alto 28-24

Mission South

Final Standings

  • Carmel
  • Alisal
  • North Salinas
  • Pacific Grove
  • King City
  • Soledad
  • Ranch San Juan
My Prediction

  • Carmel (CA)
  • Soledad (CA)
  • Alisal (Salinas, CA)
  • Rancho San Juan (Salinas, CA)
  • King City (CA)
  • North Salinas (Salinas, CA)
  • Pacific Grove (CA)
The Mission South held to form a little bit. Carmel and their high-powered offense finished 10-0, but they barely escaped Alisal. Whose ground and pound offense propelled them into second place. North Salinas was the biggest surprise, securing 3rd place and an at large playoff berth. PG, did not finish last, which was unfortunate. King City and Rancho both had young teams, look for some improvement next year for both programs. I have a feeling Carmel gets bumped up next year, Alisal could be considered as well.

Fri 11/10 Alisal (Salinas, CA) at Capuchino (San Bruno, CA), 7:00pm - CCS III Playoffs – I could go on about Alisal’s ground game and punishing front 7 but in my mind this pick is easy: Capuchino last to Sequoia, Alisal beat Sequoia. Alisal 28-14

Fri 11/10 North Salinas (Salinas, CA) vs Leigh (San Jose, CA) at Salinas Sports Complex (Salinas, CA), 4:00pm CCS D IV Playoffs. If North Salinas sticks to the basics and runs the ball, they should win. Sometimes NS gets a little too gimmicky, they have a great RB and need to keep feeding him. North Salinas 24-10

Santa Lucia

Final Standings

  • Greenfield
  • RLS
  • Gonzales
  • SLV
  • Harbor
  • Marina
  • Pajaro Valley
MY Picks

  • RLS (Pebble Beach, CA)
  • Greenfield (CA)
  • Gonzales (CA)
  • San Lorenzo Valley (Felton, CA)
  • Marina (CA)
  • Harbor (Santa Cruz, CA)
  • Pajaro Valley (Watsonville, CA)
Most of you know I always pick RLS. I kind of knew that Greenfield was just a little better this year. So really no big surprises in this division. The good news is every program won at least 1 game. I think that is really important when trying to start and maintain a winning culture. I see Greenfield getting moved up to a B league while Santa Cruz, begins its rebuilding in the Santa Lucia. And yes RLS will be the pre-season favorite.

Fri 11/10 Greenfield (CA) at Branham (San Jose, CA), 7:00pm CCS D IV Playoffs – Branham won a B league title (not a strong one), they also man handled Soledad a team Greenfield barely beat. I am rooting for Greenfield, but Branham might be too much. Branham 35-20

James Harden: The System

The NBA's James Harden was one of California's best point guards at Artesia High School during his teen years in SoCal. His individual talent (on offense) was, and is, undeniable _ when motivated to perform at a high pro level. As he forced his way out of another franchise recently, he reflected on a key reason why he demanded another trade. He claimed that his then team, the 76ers, had put him on a leash. He described his predicament as the following: "I'm not a system player...I am the system." There you have it in a nutshell. Harden has become a solo act, a one-man operation, basically an offense (and a coach) unto himself. Defense is rarely mentioned; it's irrelevant in the Harden context. Harden has taken the me-me-me approach to fresh heights. We wish his new team, the Clippers, all the best. Good luck.

Bryson Davis leads Manteca into the SJS Division II Semifinals

The second meeting between Manteca and Granite Bay played out much like the first featuring two programs that rely on good running games and strong defenses. And like the first meeting, the Buffaloes were victorious 21-14 (they won 15-0 in the regular season).

Granite Bay led 7-0 at the half with the only score coming on a 25 yard connection from Dominic Cattolico to Carson Perry-Smith.

The second half turned into the Bryson Davis show as the senior was the main source of offense in scoring all three of Manteca’s touchdowns. The last of which came with 4:01 left However, the two biggest plays on the game winning drive involved quarterback Garrison Reis keeping the ball. On a fourth and three, Manteca ran a play action pass play and Reis found Josiah Sagapolu for a first down. Later on third and goal from the eight, Reis ran around the left edge off play action down to the two to set up Davis’ final score.

Granite Bay sophomore running back Isaiah Ene had the Grizzlies' other touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 14.

Manteca will face St. Mary’s-Stockton in the SJS Division II semifinals. St. Mary’s won the regular season meeting 44-7.

Bryson Davis 6-foot-1, 205 pounds RB Manteca (2024): Davis has been one of the top backs in NorCal this year. A big back, Davis found a lot of success on pitch plays and getting outside with his speed but also physically finishing off runs.

Frank Cusano 6-foot-2, 210 pounds LB Granite Bay (2024): The Washington State bound backer was constantly around the ball. He read action quickly, didn’t get caught up on blocks and made numerous tough plays to limit Davis and other runners at the line of scrimmage.

SJS Round 2: Closest Ratings Match-Ups

There are several 2nd round playoff match-ups that feature teams that are closely rated by calpresp.com. Any one of them should be really interesting to watch. In a couple of them, the visiting team may be favored by the algorithm (rating difference in parentheses):

D1
Inderkum (+2.2)
@ Monterey Trail

D2
Granite Bay (+3.2)
@ Manteca

Del Oro
@ Jesuit (+2.5)

D3
Merced
@Oakdale (+1.5)

Impact transfers

So I've heard a lot, but what's confirmed? NCS has an eligibility committee meeting Nov. 15, which presumably will decide the fate of Cardinal Newman's Taissa Quieroz. SJS doesn't show an eligibility committee, but there is an executive committee meeting Nov. 16. Nothing is clear on transfer rulings in CCS, nor really in NCS. SJS posts its rulings.

In any event, Pinewood has transfers, but who are they? And have they been cleared?

St. Mary's is supposed to have a lot of transfers, but they don't appear to have been cleared by SJS -- and the season is pretty much now.

Salesian has some transfers who sat out last year but I don't know their names.

The Priory transfers came from the East Bay, I think, but who are they? And are they eligible?

And I'm sure there are others ...

Mills forfeits finale

Citing a lack of available players, Mills announced Wednesday it would not be able to play local rival Capuchino Friday night in San Bruno. The traditional game between these two San Mateo Union High School District entities has been played since 1959. Mills ends its 2023 season with a 5-5 record (5-2 in the PAL's C Division). Capuchino, by dint of the forfeit, winds up 9-1 (5-1 in a PAL B Division). The 9-1 record is the best record in the school's history, according to available records. Coach Jay Oca's Mustangs will proceed to the Central Coast Section playoffs beginning Nov. 10.

Did CCS get some of the seedings wrong?

CCS Play-off Projections after Week 6

With four weeks to go there is enough of a pattern to provide a reasonable projection for the play-offs. 35 of the play-off spots will be from automatic qualifiers based on league standings. The final five spots will be at-large positions. Two of these will go to the 5th and 6th place finishers in the WCAL leaving three at-large spots for the rest of the section. Currently these project to Mountain View, Alisal and Aptos, but Alisal, Aptos, Hollister, Kings Academy, and Milpitas are all separated by about 1.5 point for the final two at-large berths.

Division I

8. Mitty 5-5 63 at Serra 10-0 88.5

7. Wilcox 7-3 64 at St. Francis 7-3 78.5

6. Valley Christian 6-4 68.5 at 3. Los Gatos 8-2 74

5. Riordan 7-3 72 at 4. St. Ignatius 6-4 73

Serra will likely be the #1 seed. Seeds 2-7 will be determined between St. Francis, Riordan, Saint Ignatius, Los Gatos and Wilcox and the winner of Valley Christian and Mitty in week 10. The final spot should come down to the winner of the #6 team from the WCAL (likely loser of Mitty and Valley Christian) winner of the Gabilan (likely Salinas), or the winner of the Deanza (Menlo or Hillsdale).

Division II

8. Monterey 7-3 49 at 1. Salinas 7-3 62.5

5. Soquel 7-2 55.9 at 4. Hillsdale 9-1 57.5

6. Sacred Heart Prep 5-5 54 at Live Oak 9-0 58.33

7. Capuchino 10-0 49.5 at 2. Menlo 10-0 61

Division III

8. Fremont 9-1 39.5 at 1. Carmel 10-0 48

5. Palma 3-7 43 at 4. Scotts Valley 9-1 43.5

6. Aptos 3-7 40.5 at 3. Menlo Atherton 4-6 46

7. Aragon 7-3 40 at 2. Christopher 9-1 46.5

Division IV

8. Burlingame 4-6 30.5 at 1. Palo Alto 5-5 39

5. Alisal 8-2 36 at 4. Leigh 8-2 36.5

6. Seaside 7-3 33.5 at Mountain View 4-6 38.5

7. Willow Glen 7-2 32.1 at 2. North Salinas 8-2 39

Division V

8. Pioneer 6-4 20 at 1. Branham 8-2 29.5

5. South San Francisco 9-1 24.5 at 4. Woodside 6-4 26

6. Lincoln 5-5 23 at 3. Greenfield 9-1 26.5

7. Prospect 9-1 20.5 at 2. Santa Teresa 5-5 28.5

WCAL – Only one CCS team last year was able to come within two touchdowns of Serra and this year doesn’t figure to be any different. Second place will likely be determined in the week 9 game between Riordan and St. Francis. Saint Ignatius should get the fourth AQ spot and the two at-large spots for the fifth and sixth place finishers will likely be Mitty and Valley Christian.

PAL Bay – Los Gatos and Wilcox are the two top public schools in the section and will likely square off for the league championship in their week 9 game. Both have played some tough non-league opponents with Los Gatos playing Pittsburg, Grant and Liberty while Wilcox challenged themselves with Edison (Huntington Beach) and Valley Christian. The other three automatic spots will go to Sacred Heart Prep, Menlo-Atherton and Burlingame. Mountain View should get at -large berth.

Gabilan - This league is highly competitive without a truly dominant team. Salinas is the favorite after losing three difficult non-league contests. They still have to overcome Monterey and Palma after defeating Aptos and Soquel. Second through fifth figures to be a dog fight between pretty evenly matched teams in Aptos, Monterey, Soquel and Palma. The fifth place team will be on the bubble for an at-large berth. Currently Aptos is slated to be in 5th place and receive the last at-large berth. Hollister still has a good chance to make the play-offs if they can gain another upset win down the stretch.

Deanza – Menlo and Hillsdale square off in a battle of undefeated teams with the winner likely to win the league and the loser will get one of the league’s three automatic spots. The third spot should go. To the week 10 winner between Kings Academy and Palo Alto with the loser being on the bubble for an at-large spot.

Mt Hamilton – An exceptionally weak A league. Christopher and Live Oak should both go into their week 10 game undefeated. Santa Teresa is likely to come in 3rd and the final automatic spot should go to the week 10 contest between Lincoln and Leland. The last two automatic qualifiers are ranked so low in the section they will likely go to Division V for the play-offs.

PAL Ocean – This is the top-rated B league and gets two automatic spots. This league is competitive top to bottom but the top two spots should be between Capuchino, Aragon and Milpitas with the third place team being on the bubble for an at-large spot.

Mission South – the second highest rated B league. It looks like Carmel will win the league having already defeated the two highest rated opponents in the league. The winner of the week 9 game between North Salinas and Alisal should get the second spot with the loser being on the bubble for an at-large spot. Pacific Grove is still lurking at 6-0 but play their four most difficult opponents over the next four weeks and they will be an underdog in three of them.

El Camino – Fremont is the favorite with Woodside, Santa Clara and Los Altos competing for the second spot. Santa Clara holds a win over Woodside.

Mission North – Scotts Valley and Seaside are heavy favorites to take the top two spots. They play each other in week 8.

Santa Teresa Foothill - Branham is a favorite to win the league. Second place should be a close battle between silver Creek, Piedmont Hills, Independence and Pioneer with Pioneer currently projected for this spot. Whoever prevails for this final slot will likely be in DV for the playoffs.

Santa Teresa Valley – Leigh and Willow Glen are the two favorites over Sobrato, Westmont and Overfelt for the two automatic spots. This should also be a competitive league.

PAL Lake – South San Francisco is the favorite to gain the leagues only play-off spot. Cupertino is still undefeated in league play as well.

Santa Lucia – Greenfield is the favorite over Stevenson and Gonzales for the league’s only play-off spot.

West Valley - Prospect is a close favorite over Del Mar for the section’s weakest league.

The Genesis Of #KingsOfKezar

I was reminded this week(yesterday actually) that the Crown of KingsOfKezar came from player #21 on the SHC 2006 team,…IN today’s world he would have been D1 multiple offers.

This player’s (& classmates ) Goal was to “Run this City” and the Bruce was NOT enough,…thus the Genesis #KingsOfZKezar.

I don’t believe SHC was back IN the WCAL at this Time, after this time period SHC had some success,…& They Returned? But NOW the Question IS how far have they Fallen and can We Expect another Hiatus with FB as before with SHC?

Notable changes from last week:

North - San Marin's win over Marin Catholic caused some shuffling around D-2A and 3-AA. Calpreps rating changes adjusted D-5 and D-6. The discovery of D-7 in the NCS eliminates a need for a bye.

South - One #1 seed went down in the SS playoffs (San Gabriel, SS D-13), so the #2 seed is now listed above. SS playoffs with full brackets made a large impact in Calpreps rating movements (and therefore divisional placements) vs. the sections whose teams mostly had first-round byes.

One interesting thing to note overall is that the top seeds are no longer always the highest-rated team on Calpreps. For the purpose of this list, however, the highest remaining seeds will continue to be utilized. As the playoffs progress, we'll see the teams in the stronger brackets likely make big jumps over other teams.
