Notable changes from last week:

North - San Marin's win over Marin Catholic caused some shuffling around D-2A and 3-AA. Calpreps rating changes adjusted D-5 and D-6. The discovery of D-7 in the NCS eliminates a need for a bye.

South - One #1 seed went down in the SS playoffs (San Gabriel, SS D-13), so the #2 seed is now listed above. SS playoffs with full brackets made a large impact in Calpreps rating movements (and therefore divisional placements) vs. the sections whose teams mostly had first-round byes.

One interesting thing to note overall is that the top seeds are no longer always the highest-rated team on Calpreps. For the purpose of this list, however, the highest remaining seeds will continue to be utilized. As the playoffs progress, we'll see the teams in the stronger brackets likely make big jumps over other teams.

Serra earns No. 1 seed in CCS football playoffs; 10 county teams qualify

The Central Coast Section football brackets were released Sunday and there were no major surprises.

Ten San Mateo County teams qualified, led by Serra, which garnered the No. 1 seed in the new hybrid Open/Division I bracket. Utilizing a system employed in both the North Coast and the Southern sections, the top eight teams in the CCS will battle for the Open and Division I titles in one bracket, with the idea being having the top two teams in the section representing CCS at the regional and state levels.

In this scenario the No. 1 and No. 8 seeds, along with No. 2 and No. 7, play in the top half of the bracket and will play for a spot in the Open championship game. In the bottom half of the bracket, the Nos. 3-6 and Nos. 4-5 games will play for a spot in the Division I final.

Serra (10-0) will face No. 8 Salinas (7-3) at 1 p.m. Saturday, while No. 2 St. Francis (7-3) and No. 7 Wilcox (7-3) will play in Mountain View at 7 p.m. Friday. The winner of those games will face off in the Open Division final Nov. 17 or 18.

Montgomery Tournament Nov. 30-Dec. 2

Coaches:

I have a unique situation regarding our Boys Varsity Tournament here at Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa. I have not had a drop, but a team let me know they would be OK being replaced. Coming from out of the area and facing some challenges.

Again, they are not dropping and will come, but if there is a team out there looking for something that weekend (11/30-12/2) we could discuss. Quality tournament and very good field.

If there is any interest out there, please give me a call.

A Nightmare in Santa Cruz

Having a bad day, pal? Well, take a moment and think about the Santa Cruz football program. They were 0-9, with three forfeits. Their other six losses were shutouts. SC gave up 308 points in those six running-clock debacles, a ghastly 51 points per outing. They didn't tally a single digit in 2023. And you thought you had it tough. Just shoot me.

Huge games in North Bay

To no surprise this weekend will decide league champ in NBL and MCAL.

Windsor 7-1-1
At Newman 9-0

Will Newman avenge last years controversial loss at Windsor? Newman comes into this one much better than last year and has huge advantages on the front 7. Not sure newman will see anybody as good in d3 or d2 in terms of line play as what they have. However, newman will likely not see as athletic and talented players at the skill position as Windsor. Both receivers have offers to big time power 5 schools and will be matchup issues. Both teams come into this one with a lot of momentum.

I’m going with line play and physicality in this one. I think newman controls game and homann grinds out yards.
27-24 newman wins a thriller.

San Marin at
Marin Catholic

Good ole sat afternoon football. Gosh that has to be annoying @MC415 !

San Marin has the best non offered QB I can recall. No idea how this kid isn’t getting offers. He’s 6”4 and ticks all boxes. Anyway, I think Marin Catholic at home will get tested but I still think they win in a shootout. 42-28.

All 4 teams should make deep playoff runs and I wouldn’t be surprised a norcal game or 2.

Longtime girls’ basketball coach at Mills High School Dave Matsu

Dave Matsu, the longtime girls’ basketball coach at Mills High School, has died. He was 54.

Matsu succumbed to stroke-related injuries Saturday afternoon at Kaiser Permanente Redwood City Medical Center. He suffered a stroke the previous weekend and had been hospitalized for seven days. He is survived by his wife Donna, and five children, Holly, Alex, Justin, Taylor and Kayleigh.

The longest tenured girls’ basketball head coach in San Mateo County, Matsu took over the strong Mills program in 2007-08. The Vikings reached the postseason in each of his 17 years as the official head coach. Bestowed with the 2022-23 Central Coast Section Honor Coach Award for girls’ basketball last season, his career culminated last season in Mills’ first CCS championship since 1985, with his son Justin serving as co-head coach alongside him.

“I just think he was the perfect guy at the perfect school where he had the support,” said Paul Carion, who coached against Matsu with three different Peninsula Athletic League girls’ basketball teams. “He was very engrained in the community. All the girls knew going in that they were going to go in and play with him. He just built a place where players and parents … were comfortable they were going in to play for a very good high school basketball program, which I don’t think a lot of players and parents feel these days.”

Matsu was known for his passionate coaching style. Stern but fair, emotional but endearing, he was intent on bringing a family environment to Mills’ sports community. He took over the Vikings just three years after the death of another legendary Mills girls’ basketball coach, Kelly Shea-Gallo, who succumbed to cancer in 2004.

Matsu introduced the mantra “ohana,” the Hawaiian word for “family,” as an enduring legacy through his years with the girls’ basketball program.

“Ohana” came full circle in 2021-22 when his son, Justin, joined his coaching staff. While Matsu was listed as the Vikings’ head coach for the past two years, he entrusted Justin with running the team on the court. Justin had grown up with the Mills program, accompanying his father to practices since he was a young boy.

“Being a mentor, that’s what it’s all about,” Dave Matsu said in a February 2023 interview. “Being able to give back and wanting the best for your kids. And being able to provide Justin with this opportunity, it means the world to me.”

Matsu was born in December 1968. He grew up in Burlingame, where he attended Franklin Elementary School. He graduated in 1987 from Mills, where he played basketball for coach Bob Thompson. He went on to coach at Mercy-Burlingame, where he worked on staff for San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame coach Mike Ciardella.

It was as a fourth grader at Franklin Elementary where Matsu first played against great area basketball coach Steve Picchi, when Picchi coached against the Franklin team. In the years to come, the two would form a lifelong friendship.

“Just a class act, a great coach,” Picchi said. “There’s no words I can say that can express how sad I am about this because it’s just too soon for him to go. … My heart goes out to his whole family.”

In Matsu’s years with Mills, Picchi’s daughter Christine became an integral part of the “ohana” community. She is known for her regular pregame performances in singing the national anthem for Mills’ home games. With Mills playing as the home team in last season’s CCS Division III championship game at Santa Clara High School, she was asked by Matsu to sing the anthem. Because of the neutral site, there was some disagreement as the national anthem protocol, but Matsu fought for Christine to perform, Picchi said.

“What a kind man Dave was,” Picchi said. “He treated everybody so well and with tremendous kindness. In particular, the way he treated my daughter so well and invited her to sing the national anthem … I just can’t express how much that means to me.”

For the past three years, Matsu coached with the San Jose Ninjas 12th grade club basketball team. He coached his last game for them within recent weeks. One of the players on his Ninjas team, Jake Nakamura, is the son of longtime Presentation girls’ basketball coach Wade Nakamura, who coached against Matsu several times in the CCS playoffs.

Wade Nakamura is affiliated with the Positive Coaching Alliance, a pilot program that now runs nationwide, but originated at Stanford University. Nakamura said Matsu befriended him much in part to his curiosity about the 13-week courses of the PCA. It was something Matsu pursued in an effort to evolve from his old-school approach, and it made quite an impact on his coaching style, Nakamura said.

“Definite difference,” Nakamura said. “I think Dave would admit he was more … old school, he was a yeller, he was more about being an intimidating presence on the sideline. And I think he didn’t like that. … He immediately gave me feedback that: ‘Man, this is working,’ and he really liked it, and he really liked the change in him.”

A graduate of Mills, Matsu met longtime friend Ron Ozorio when they were students there. Ozorio, now the head coach of the Carlmont boys’ basketball team, coached with Matsu at Mercy-Burlingame and with the Burlingame Parks & Recreation Department.

“The main thing is what everyone always knows,” Ozorio said, “how much his family — Mills is big on that ‘ohana’ family — so the happiness of his family and his friends was his whole life.”

San Mateo ends long streak

San Mateo ended a 13-season Little Big Game losing streak by defeating Burlingame, 17-14, Saturday in front of 3,000 fans on the Bearcats' field. The Bearcats gobbled up four Burlingame turnovers, including three pass interceptions, to preserve the victory. Burlingame leads the series that began in 1927, 59-33-4. San Mateo ended its season 6-4. Burlingame is 3-7. The Panthers, by dint of their A league status, are projected to be a low seed in the upcoming Central Coast Section playoffs.

PCAL Week 2

Week 2

After week 1 we have learned that the Gabilan is probably not as strong statewide as in previous years. Salinas and Aptos both took home losses to good out of section schools. Both teams will be fine and will compete for the Gabilan title, but I don’t see a dominate team out of the Gabilan this year. Palma, maybe the best, but they don’t play anybody until the league starts.

Not sure what’s happening with Santa Cruz. They lost 40-0 to Harbor, in a game that was called at half. All due respect to Harbor but this is the equivalent of a DII team beating a power 5 school. Here is a link (paywall?) to the game that had some ugliness to it as well, as some Harbor coaches were ejected. It will be interesting to follow both these teams future this year. Santa Cruz is 2 years removed from an undefeated regular season.

This week has some WCAL schools on the schedule as Aptos plays Mitty, and Salinas hosts Valley Christian. And RLS starts the season as they look to stop a 5 game losing streak to St. Francis (CC)

Last week: 12-5 Season 12-5

Gabilan

Thu 08/31 Wilcox (Santa Clara, CA) at Hollister (CA), 7:30pm -
Hollister beat up an outmanned Oak Grove team last week, Wilcox will be much tougher. Wilcox 21-20

Thu 08/31 Palma (Salinas, CA) at King City (CA), 7:30pm-
Palma your non-league schedule is shameful. Did you call Marina to see if they had an opening? King City has not beaten Palma since 1982. After losing badly to Greenfield, that does not change this year. Palma 35-7

Fri 09/01 Oak Grove (San Jose, CA) at Alvarez (Salinas, CA), 7:30pm-
Alvarez may of played itself out of the Gabilan for 2024 with its loss to Alisal last week. Oak Grove makes it second trip down to the PCAL. This one will be much closer. Oak Grove 21-14

Fri 09/01 Monterey (CA) at Aragon (San Mateo, CA), 7:00pm-
Monterey looked great in its 35-0 blow out of St Francis, the game was not even that close. Aragon had a big win last week as well. I am “bullish” (you know because they are Toreadors) on this Monterey team. Monterey 28-14

Fri 09/01 Mitty (San Jose, CA) vs Aptos (CA) at Foothill College (Los Altos Hills, CA), 7:00pm-
Mitty started the season wit a nice road win @ Logan. Aptos had a close loss to Oakdale. Taking Aptos in a close one. Aptos 28-27

Fri 09/01 Valley Christian (San Jose, CA) at Salinas (CA), 7:00pm-
Salinas defense looks solid and kept them in the game last week vs CVC. But they need to figure things out on offense. Too many dropped passes and mental mistakes. Salinas 17-14

Fri 09/01 Burlingame (CA) at Soquel (CA), 7:30pm Gabilan-
Palma should look at Soquel’s schedule to see who to play in preseason. Too bad this is not one of Soquel’s better teams. But they should have enough this week. Soquel 21-17

Mission North

Thu 08/31 Scotts Valley (CA) at Willow Glen (San Jose, CA), 7:00pm -
With the way their schedule plays out Scott’s Valley may not give up a point to week 4. Scott’s Valley 24-0

Fri 09/01 North Monterey County (Castroville, CA) at Alisal (Salinas, CA), 7:30pm -
NMC played a good Christopher Team close for 3 qtrs., Alisal had a big win over their crosstown rival. Alisal grinds tis one out as well. Alisal 26-14

Fri 09/01 Santa Clara (CA) at Monte Vista Christian (Watsonville, CA), 7:30pm -
MVC had a great comeback forcing OT on the last play and then winning the game. Expect another close one this week. Santa Clara 35-34

Fri 09/01 Santa Cruz (CA) at Saratoga (CA), 7:00pm
- Santa Cruz has some issue with a low turnout. Going down 40-0 at half to Harbor is not good. Saratoga 35-7

Fri 09/01 Marina (CA) at Seaside (CA), 7:30pm -
Marina disappointed me with their effort vs PG. Seaside is way better than PG. Seaside 45-14

Sat 09/02 Pajaro Valley (Watsonville, CA) at Watsonville (CA), 7:30pm- Pajaro Valley traveled to Ripon last week to get blown out. Watsonville only had to go to Carmel to do the same thing. Watsonville 24-7

Mission South

Thu 08/31 Greenfield (CA) at Soledad (CA), 7:00pm-
Greenfield had a fairly easy win over King City. Let’s see how Soledad bounces back after the loss at Palma. Soledad 21-20

Fri 09/01 Pacific Grove (CA) at Gonzales (CA), 7:30pm-
Gonzales will be looking to just score its first points this year. PG was way too much for Marina. PG (its killing me) 24-14

Fri 09/01 North Salinas (Salinas, CA) at Jefferson (Daly City, CA), 7:00pm
I think North Salinas has a chance to start a win streak this year. North Salinas 23-14

Fri 09/01 Los Altos (CA) at Rancho San Juan (Salinas, CA), 7:00pm
Los Altos was 10 seconds away from knocking off MVC last week. Rancho Hung around with Seaside. Rancho 35-21

Sat 09/02 Gilroy (CA) at Carmel (CA), 2:00pm –
Carmel my have found a QB. Neither Watsonville or Gilroy is that good this year, but if the QB can gain confidence that will only help Carmel in league games. Carmel 45-17

Santa Lucia

Sat 09/02 Yerba Buena (San Jose, CA) at Harbor (Santa Cruz, CA), 6:00pm –
So is Harbor that good, or is Santa Cruz that bad? Let’s give Harbor the benefit of the doubt here. Harbor 32-14

Sat 09/02 Gunderson (San Jose, CA) at San Lorenzo Valley (Felton, CA), 1:00pm
– It looks like it might be another long year up in the Santa Cruz mountains for the once proud SLV program. Gunderson 33-7

Sat 09/02 St. Francis (Watsonville, CA) at Stevenson (Pebble Beach, CA), 12:30pm
– Save the best game of the weekend for last. SF was blown out by a good Monterey team last week and will look to rebound against its old division rival. Defending Champions RLS, looks to make history this year and become the first back-to-back football champions in school history (last year was their 3rd title ever). Truth is ST. Francis is probably the better team, as RLS is young and inexperienced this year. But that has never stopped me before. RLS 24-23

PCAL Week 11

PCAL Week 11 – Final week of regular season

Last week 10-2 Overall 98-32

Gabilan-

This is what we know: Salinas is in, Soquel is in, Monterey is in. Either Palma, Hollister or Alvarez will make the playoffs as the 4th seed. Aptos needs to win and some help outside the division to get an at large berth. So my gut tells me that Palma continues the streak and gets the 4th seed and guarantee playoff spot. Hollister appears to be on an inside track to at large bid, (according to PALBooster), but they are on the cusp. That early season loss to Alvarez has really bit them in the butt. I could not even explain what division each team is in or where they may end up. But looks like most will land in II or III.

Fri 11/03 Palma (Salinas, CA) at Alvarez (Salinas, CA), 7:30pm -It would be awesome if Alvarez won, chaos for the playoffs. But Palma needs to win to keep the streak alive. Palma 35-7

Fri 11/03 Soquel (CA) at Aptos (CA), 7:30pm
- Wow Aptos not making the playoffs, even with a win, they would need some help. Sad way to see Blankenship retire (at least from Aptos). Soquel 31-24

Fri 11/03 Monterey (CA) vs Seaside (CA) at Monterey Peninsula College (Monterey, CA), 7:30pm- Battle of the bay, one of the better local rivalries. This year both teams already secured a playoff spot. The weird thing is either team probably benefit with a loss. CCS playoffs are unusual. Monterey 35-34

Fri 11/03 Hollister (CA) at Salinas (CA), 7:00pm
- A win will not guarantee a playoff spot for Hollister, but it would really help them in the at large pool. But this team lost to Alvarez. Nice win over Monterey and Aptos, but you got to beat Alvarez to make the playoffs in the Gabilan. Salinas 35-14

Mission North

I am going to refer this as the forgotten division. Because it does not get a lot of attention. Scott’s Valley rolled beating team by 28.5 points. Seaside won a close game with North Monterey County to lock up 2nd place. Meanwhile Santa Cruz will only play 7 games due to low numbers/transfers. They have yet to score this season. At 9-1 Scott’s Valley should be very competitive in the DIII bracket as their only loss was to a pretty good Soquel team 21-7.

Fri 11/03 North Monterey County (Castroville, CA) at Watsonville (CA), 7:30pm- when the season started I thought that NMC should have been put in the Santa Lucia, I thought this program was going in the wrong direction. I was wrong. They gave SV the toughest league test, and probably beat Seaside if they played today. Great turn around year for this program. NMC 32-14

Sat 11/04 Santa Cruz (CA) at Scotts Valley (CA), 2:00pm-(IT IS BEING REPORTED SANTA CRUZ FORFIETED THIS GAME) I can see SV coach Walters “encouraging” Santa Cruz to score this game. He will make them earn it vs his backups, but I can see a scenario in the 4th qtr where Santa Cruz scores. SV 45-7

Sat 11/04 Monte Vista Christian (Watsonville, CA) at St. Francis (Watsonville, CA),-
The battle for the “Holly cup” of Watsonville. It will be fun to watch these programs over the next 5 years as both try to become a regional football power. Like a Palma for Santa Cruz County. MVC 24-7

Mission South

Carmel, what to do with Carmel? Too dominate for the B division, too small to compete in the Gabilan. They will finish the season 10-0. But if projections hold true, they will earn the #8 seed in DII and play Salinas? That would actually be a really fun game, Carmel’s offense vs Salinas D. Alisal would love to get a rematch with Carmel, but looks like they will be in DIII, and I am really hoping North Salinas holds onto an at large bid.

Fri 11/03 Rancho San Juan (Salinas, CA) at Alisal (Salinas, CA), 7:30pm- Rancho is wrapping up a “disappointing” season but I still like what I see as far as building up a football program. The School has only been around for 5 years. Alisal 42-14

Fri 11/03 King City (CA) at Soledad (CA), 7:30pm- Not sure what happened in Soledad this year. They have really struggled to stay competitive; I will be curios to see if they bounce back. I thought KC would be a little better, but this division just had too many good teams. KC 21-20

Sat 11/04 Carmel (CA) at Pacific Grove (CA), 7:30pm -
Carmel will not lose the Shoe game on “purpose” to drop down a division in the playoffs. PG will be amped as they finally have a semi-competitive team this year and Carmel needs to avoid a let down. Unfortunately for PG, this is a really good Carmel team, not like their past 2 years. 2014 was the last year PG won the “Shoe”. The streak continues. Carmel 54-14

Santa Lucia

So if Gonzales beats Greenfield, can we (RLS) hang a banner for tri-championship? I know we lose the tiebreaker for playoffs, but a banner is a banner. The only way Greenfield does not make the playoffs is a loss to Gonzales and RLS loss to Harbor. I don’t think either of those things are going to happen. But if they do Gonzales would go to the Playoffs. Greenfield has been the best team all year with a 31-point margin of victory in league. I hope they can stay in the DV playoffs.

Fri 11/03 Greenfield (CA) at Gonzales (CA), 7:30pm – It would be great if Gonzales wins, you know so RLS can hang a banner, but I see Greenfield taking care of business. Greenfield 28-14

Sat 11/04 Marina (CA) at Pajaro Valley (Watsonville, CA), 2:00pm – This will be one of the closer games in the area between 2 pretty evenly matched teams. Pajaro comes in losing 4 straight, Marina 6 straight losses. Make it 7 for Marina. PV 34-33

Sat 11/04 Harbor (Santa Cruz, CA) at Stevenson (Pebble Beach, CA)
, 2:00pm- We will know if this game means anything before kickoff. Even if it does not the defending Santa Lucia champions should still handle Harbor. RLS 28-6

Ancient rivalry on tap in San Mateo

The Little Big Game between neighbors San Mateo and Burlingame is set for Saturday at 11 a.m. on the former's field. San Mateo, which plays in a PAL B Division, is 5-4. Burlingame, a PAL A Division program, is 3-6. The LBG, one of the oldest public school traditional contests in the Bay Area, was first played in 1927, one year after San Mateo had captured the CIF state championship. This weekend's contest will be the 96th in the long series. Burlingame leads the series, 59-32, with four ties. The Panthers have won the last 13 meetings. That's the longest winning streak in the rivalry's history.
