Game of the Week Poll - https://norcalpreps.forums.rivals.com/threads/week-5-game-of-the-week-poll.29063/

Week 4 scores - 09/14 - 09/16

Getting the thread started early this time.

Which game are you attending, or which game will you be streaming/following tonight?

I'll be out at Newman Field in Orangevale for Del Oro (4-0) versus Casa Roble (3-0).

DO has Pinnick and Poe. CR has Blevins and Owens and a sizeable offensive line.

Looking forward to a great game featuring two undefeated teams.

PCAL Week 4

PCAL Week 4 -The GOOD, The BAD and The UGLY

This week is crossover week in the PCAL where all the teams play another team from a different league. This was done so AD’s only had to find 3 non-league games.

The Good- Harbor, Greenfield, Alisal and North Salinas all being 3-0. There are some other 3-0 teams left in the PCAL but these are the biggest surprises. Harbor has been just plain bad for a lot of years, so it is great to see them wining and winning by a lot. They will challenge RLS and Greenfield in the Sana Lucia this year. Greenfield has played a decent schedule and has beaten its south county neighbor and rival, King City, and 2 playoff teams from last year. They are now the team to beat in the Santa Lucia. North Salinas went winless last year, I still think Carmel and Alisal are better, but they may challenge in the Mission North. Alisal, by Cal Preps rankings, has the best win for all of the PCAL this year with their road victory over Sequoia. For some clarification Sequoia is ranked as a -19.1, not necessarily a great victory which leads us to:

The Bad- The Gabilan division is a bit of a disappointment this year. Not one signature win by it’s top 6 teams. Monterey is undefeated at 2-0 but both those wins were expected. Salinas and Aptos are a combined 0-6. Hollister and Alvarez have each beaten Oak Grove, and Soquel has an “ok” victory over a down Burlingame program. Meanwhile Palma beat up on King City and Soledad (Greenfield beat both as well) then got punched in the mouth by Yuma Catholic. It is safe to say that none of these Gabilan teams will threaten the top of the CCS this year. (Yes, I realize nobody is beating Serra, but I meant Riordan, St. Francis etc…

The Ugly – The Santa Cruz program is in trouble this year. Apparently, a bunch of kids left the program and went down the road to Soquel (Same District). It is so bad that they forfeited their game last week vs Soquel and have already forfeited/cancelled their game this week with Hollister due to small numbers and not enough healthy players. I really hope they can get a semi-competitive team for the remainder of the Mission North season. It raises the question about the bottom of the Gabilan. Carmel, Seaside, North Salinas, and MVC are all examples of “smaller” schools/programs that have been put into the Gabilan and then seen their programs decline for 2-3 years after getting beaten up. I do not have a perfect solution, but Santa Cruz joins a long list of programs trying to recover after a stint in the Gabilan.

Last Week 13-6 Overall 41-17

Thu 09/14 Scotts Valley (CA) at Soquel (CA), 7:30pm –
Scott’s Valley is undefeated at 3-0, but Soquel is the better team this year. Soquel 28-14

Fri 09/15 Palma (Salinas, CA) at Alisal (Salinas, CA), 7:30pm-
This is a crossover game so I can’t blame Palma for scheduling it. But Alisal is better than expected and may give Palma some trouble up front. In the end Palma probably has too many athletes. Palma 24-7

Fri 09/15 Carmel (CA) at Alvarez (Salinas, CA), 7:30pm
Carmel will take its high scoring offense out for a night game for the first time this year. It may take them a qtr. to get acclimated to playing under the lights, but they will be too fast for Alvarez. Carmel 48-21

Fri 09/15 Monterey (CA) vs Monte Vista Christian (Watsonville, CA) at Monterey Peninsula College (Monterey, CA), 7:30pm
-Battle of unbeatens. Monterey just has too much speed for MVC. Monterey 35-21

Fri 09/15 Aptos (CA) vs North Salinas (Salinas, CA) at Salinas Sports Complex (Salinas, CA), 7:30pm
-Great start by North Salinas, but Aptos will get their firs victory of the year. Aptos35-14

Fri 09/15 Salinas (CA) at Seaside (CA), 7:30pm
– This is not the crossover team you want to play if you are Salinas. Cal preps gives Seaside only a 19% chance to win. I give them about 50%. Let’s see if Salinas can score some point to help the defense. Salinas 21-20

Sat 09/16 Hollister (CA) at Santa Cruz (CA), 6:00pm –
It is my understanding this game has been cancelled, which is probably best for Santa Cruz. NO Pick

Mission North

Fri 09/15 Harbor (Santa Cruz, CA) at North Monterey County (Castroville, CA), 7:30pm
-This game should be close. NMC has yet to win but they have been in every game so far. Harbor has outscored it 3 opponents by 41 points. NMC has played a tougher schedule. Taking the upset here. Harbor 35-30

Fri 09/15 San Lorenzo Valley (Felton, CA) at Watsonville (CA), 7:30pm
– Another pretty evenly matched game here between 2 struggling programs. Taking the home team Catz. Watsonville 17-14

Sat 09/16 Pajaro Valley (Watsonville, CA) at St. Francis (Watsonville, CA), 12:30pm
-Pajaro seem to be struggling offensively as they have yet to score this season. It probably won’t get better this game. St Francis 35-0

Mission South

Thu 09/14 Pacific Grove (CA) at Greenfield (CA), 7:30pm
- For safety reasons Thursday games should be played with teams that did not play on the Saturday before. Both these teams played last Saturday so no advantage, but both are banged up and this game should be pushed to Friday. (just my 2 cents.) Greenfield keeps the magic going. Greenfield 24-22

Fri 09/15 Marina (CA) at Rancho San Juan (Salinas, CA), 7:30pm
– I though Rancho would of given MVC a better game last week, Marina had a great performance vs an overmatched Lick squad. This game may be closer than expected. Rancho 28-24

Sat 09/16 Soledad (CA) at Gonzales (CA), 7:30pm
– The battle for the best Swiss Sausage sandwich. Gonzales uses Roy’s, and they are fantastic, the sausage not the football team this year. But Soledad is probably a bit better on the football field. Soledad 21-17

Sat 09/16 King City (CA) at Stevenson (Pebble Beach, CA), 2:00pm
– Both these teams seem to be learning on the fly. KC got a 2-point victory over Gonzales last week, while RLS remembered why they hate playing Carmel. KC is going to try and establish it’s physicality and keep the ball away from RLS’s young but talented QB. If I was betting, (which I stopped doing) I would take King City. But… RLS 20-17

Santa Lucia

Game of the Week

Week 5 Football Scoreboard

#4 De La Salle beat #2 St. Mary’s-Stockton 24-10

The Spartans leaned on a strong ground game for nearly 300 yards, led by another 100+ yard showing from junior Dominic Kelley. They also got a big kickoff return from senior Jonathan Guerrero to set up an early short field.

#9 San Ramon Valley beat #16 McClymonds 35-7

In a matchup highlighted by the San Ramon Valley offense vs. the McClymonds defense, it was the Wolves’ defense that helped set the tone. The Warriors only score came on a kick return. San Ramon Valley senior John Pau Mendoza had three rushing touchdowns.

#12 Del Oro beat Casa Roble 31-13

Caden Pinnick threw for more than 300 yards, Tommy Poe had more than 100 receiving yards and the Golden Eagles got good production in the running game from junior Marcel Urquhart. Casa Roble is primed to be a section/NorCal contender as the season progresses.

#15 Granite Bay beat Vacaville 34-13

Junior Carter Jackson added three more rushing touchdowns as Granite Bay jumped out to an early lead. Vacaville has dropped two straight games since a 2-0 start. They will end the non-league at undefeated El Cerrito next week.

Amador Valley beat Monte Vista 41-34

After trailing 21-7 in the first half, Amador Valley came back to hand Monte Vista its first loss in an EBAL crossover game. Amador Valley senior Jake Goldsworthy ran for 227 yards and three touchdowns.

Chico beat Whitey 27-17

Chico was down 10-0 at the half, but scored the next 27 points to improve to 4-0 (all against SJS teams). Chico senior running back Dion Coleman had three rushing touchdowns. Chico finishes the non-league against West Park next week.

Orland beat Shasta 47-14

Orland led 33-7 at the half in picking up a key Northern Section win. The Torjans had eight different runners get carries in finishing with 262 yards.

Escalon beat Oakdale 41-21

Escalon turned to the air against Oakdale with senior Donovan Rozevink throwing for 285 yards and five touchdowns. Junior Sam Jimenez was the top target with 144 yards and three scores.

Fremont-Sunnyvale beat Terra Nova 15-12

Fremont got the game winning score from junior quarterback Henry Buenrostro with less than two minutes to play to notch its third straight win.

2023 WCAL Football

WIth scrimmages out of the way and school starting, I thought I'd post a 2023 WCAL Football Outlook. All the WCAL teams look to have very strong non-league schedules. Some even scheduling teams from SoCal like Helix-San Diego (SF), Cathedral Catholic-SD (SI) St. Bonaventure-Ventura (Riordan) Who do you got and why? Will @Rmbr26 make his long awaited return with his astute assessments?
  1. Serra - returns arguably its best senior class in the program's history. Serra returns the WCAL QB of the year (Smith); OLB of the Year (Alapati), TE of the year (Harrison); DB of the year (Bey); Utility of the year (Green) and Jr of the Year (Mann). Tough preseason slate that kicks off with Folsom, DLS and Central Catholic also prepare the Padres for the WCAL Gauntlet, WCAL Playoffs (err CCS Open) and NorCal /State Open Run.
  2. Riordan - Coach Ravipati enters his 2nd year and this is now his team. With an already solid returning core, the Crusaders bring in a host of highly recruited 3 and 4 star transfers. The program looks promising for the future as it welcomes one its strongest freshmen class since 2016. 3 freshmen already have D1 offers! The teams strengths look to be its offensive line, QB (Mitchell Jr) and WR/DBs (Jackson, Wedeymuller, Jones). Depth also appears very much improved as Riordan was decimated from injuries to its top players last year. On paper, Riordan possesses size, speed and talent and should have a break out year. The Crusader Coaching Staff seems up to the task to bring this team together.
  3. St. Francis - Tough call to make as I almost took the Lancers @ 2nd ahead of Riordan. SF appears to reload every year like Serra. Great story with SF's QB Knapp and his recovery. The Lancers found another power rb in jr Keanaaina last season as he lit it up the second half of the season. Team defense, a power I offense and depth remain hallmarks of the Lancers.
  4. Bellarmine - new coach Diaz-Infante takes over for Beauchman. Bells lose their power rb and top DE and LB but return its qb Threatt, WR, TE and leading tackler from last season.
  5. St. Ignatius - the other Jesuit school also has a new coach in Vandermade replacing longtime coach Regalia. SI brings back its qb (Hummel) who started as a soph last year. He teams up with their leading receiver (St. Gemme) from last year and will be protected by a very good OL led by Mills (several D1 offers) and overall strong junior class that includes hard hitting LB Hunkin.
  6. Valley Christian - The Warriors look to bounce back from last years 0-WCAL record. They bring back a bunch of returners led by its hulk OL (Taulealea) and fireplug RB (Eke). VC lost its Qb to transfer, but gain a promising WR that comes over from Serra and has dubbed himself Megatron.
  7. SHC- The Irish lose a majority of both its offensive firepower and defensive prowess and speed in losing Mixon, Sanders and Miller to graduation. They bring back 4year varsity player McGrath and is protected by a huge OL led by Young and Hatch. Some key returners include Salgado and Irons at WR/DB.
  8. Mitty - The Monarchs also lose their top weapons in QB and WRs, but return its starting Rb (Cenzel). Coach Sullivan will have his squad ready to compete and perhaps surprise the league again with a strong campaign.

Football Player Spotlight: Riordan 2025 WR Chris Lawson

Riordan 2025 wide receiver Chris Lawson (6-foot-1,180 pounds) has only bolstered his case as one of the top receivers in Northern California in his first season with the Crusaders. He transferred in from Foothill-Pleasanton.

Lawson is a real run after the catch threat with multiple touchdowns this year on short routes taken for long scores. He has also gotten behind the defense and does a good job of adjusting his routes when the quarterback is on the move.

In their toughest game to date, Lawson went for 13 catches and 134 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s loss to St. Bonaventure.

Week 5 Game Previews

#2 St. Mary’s-Stockton (3-0) at #4 De La Salle (1-2)

De La Salle will look to avenge a loss in Stockton last year and are coming off its first win of the season behind a good rushing effort from junior Dominic Kelley. The Rams are averaging 400 yards per game with balanced production in the run and pass games.

#16 McClymonds (2-0) at #9 San Ramon Valley (3-0)

San Ramon Valley senior Luke Baker has been outstanding in completing 70 percent of his passes for 932 yards and 10 touchdowns with just one interception. In comes a McClymonds defense that has posted back-to-back shutouts against Bellarmine and Bishop O’Dowd.

#12 Del Oro (4-0) at Casa Roble (3-0)

Casa Roble has leaned on its running attack through three games with 233 yards per game led by junior Braylen Blevins. The story for the Golden Eagles starts with dynamic senior quarterback Caden Pinnick, but the defense has played well in recent weeks. After giving up 34 points in week 1 against Inderkum, they have given up 36 total points in the past three games.

#15 Granite Bay (2-2) at Vacaville (2-1)

Vacaville is coming off a bye following its 27-7 loss at Cardinal Newman. After throwing for 321 yards in the opening win over Davis, Vacaville has thrown for 93 total yards against Sheldon and the Cardinals. Junior Carter Jackson has just shy of half the carries for Granite Bay with 355 yards and six touchdowns.

Monte Vista (3-0) at Amador Valley (2-1)

Monte Vista has scored at least 40 points in each game with junior running back Julian Mcmahan averaging more than 100 yards per game. Junior quarterback Brayden Turner has thrown nine total touchdowns to six different receivers. Amador Valley hasn’t given up more than 14 points with all three games being decided by one possession.

Whitney (2-2) at Chico (3-0)

Dai’Torian Brown-Law has caught four of the six touchdowns from quarterback Logan Sindelar. Whitney’s losses have come to undefeated Woodcreek and one loss Clovis. Chico senior running back Dion Coleman has averaged 168 yards per game during his career while battling injuries. This year, he is at 528 yards and eight touchdowns.

Orland (1-1) at Shasta (3-0)

Shasta senior Ryder May has run for 304 yards and five touchdowns and the Wolves’ defense is giving up 13 points per game. Orland has a pair of runners at more than 100 yards per game, including quarterback Diego Rico. Orland’s loss came to Enterprise (39-35) in the opening game.

Escalon (3-1) at Oakdale (3-0)

This is a great example of non-league area powers meeting up and creating fun early season matchups. After posting one possession wins over Sonora and Aptos, Oakdale beat Sheldon 41-6 last week. No one has really stopped the Escalon ground attack, which has 265 yards per game. Joshua Graham is the Cougars’ top rusher.

Menlo-Atherton (1-2) at Menlo (3-0)

Menlo-Atherton junior quarterback Xander Eschelman is a player to watch with 608 yards and five touchdowns on a 71 percent completion percentage. Menlo is giving up nine points per game. This figures to be one of the Knights’ toughest games of the regular season.

Terra Nova (3-0) at Fremont-Sunnyvale (2-1)

Mateo Corona is off to a terrific start with 467 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. The Tigers are averaging 350 rushing yards per game. Fremont has won two straight games since losing the opener to Palo Alto 28-10. The Firebirds have given up eight combined points in the past two weeks.

49th Annual Fr. Barry Classic at Jesuit High School - Dec 7-9, 2023

Introducing the field for the 49th annual Fr. Barry Classic at Jesuit High School on December 7-9, 2023.

Archbishop Mitty - San Jose, CA
Bellarmine Prep - San Jose, CA
Brophy Prep - Phoenix, AZ
Cathedral Catholic - San Diego, CA
Jesuit - Sacramento, CA
Loyola - Los Angeles, CA
St. Mary's - Stockton, CA
Strake - Houston, TX

Should be a great 3 days of competitive hoop at Jesuit!

Football Player Spotlight: Campolindo 2026 TE/DE Crosby Kelly

Campolindo 2026 TE/DE Crosby Kelly is a sophomore to watch with a good showing on both sides of the ball.

Defensively, he has good strength with the technique to win against tackles and reach the quarterback. He also has the motor to stick with a play and still have an impact. He has 1.5 sacks through three games.

At tight end, his biggest impact is as a blocker. He kicks defenders outside to open a running lane and rarely gets knocked back once he is engaged.

Expect Kelly to be the next Division I prospect out of Moraga.

Football Player Spotlight: Serra 2024 LB Jabari Mann

Serra 2024 linebacker Jabari Mann (6-foot-0, 200 pounds) was the WCAL Junior of the Year last season and has been one of the region’s best defenders during the first month of the season.

Mann is a presence in the middle of the field. He is quick off the snap, reads plays quickly and works around blockers. Once he reaches the ball, Mann is a big hitter.

Mann had seven tackles and a sack against Folsom and 10 tackles against De La Salle. He has also seen spot duty as a runner.

He is ranked No. 17 overall in the NCP Top 50 and No. 3 among linebackers.

Recruiting: Mann committed to San Jose State in February and the Spartans have done a good job of bringing in talented local prospects. However, Oregon State offered Mann this week.

NCP Football Section Rankings: League Races Take Shape

Sac-Joaquin Section

1. Folsom (3-1)
2. St. Mary’s-Stockton (3-0)
3. Oak Ridge (4-0)
4. Central Catholic (2-2)
5. Grant (3-1)
6. Rocklin (4-0)
7. Del Oro (4-0)
8. Manteca (2-2)
9. Granite Bay (1-2)
10. Casa Roble (4-0)
11. Downey (4-0)
12. Escalon (3-1)
13. Vista del Lago (3-1)
14. Vacaville (2-1)
15. Woodcreek (3-0)

Thought Bubble: Five of the Top nine teams in the section are from the Sierra Foothill League with Del Oro improving to 4-0 last week. In the southern half of the section, the race for the No. 2 team looks wide open with Manteca, Escalon, Downey, Oakdale, Patterson and Turlock among the teams to watch.

North Coast Section

1. De La Salle (1-2)
2. Pittsburg (3-0)
3. San Ramon Valley (3-0)
4. Clayton Valley Charter (1-2)
5. California (2-1)
6. Marin Catholic (3-0)
7. San Marin (3-0)
8. El Cerrito (2-0)
9. Cardinal Newman (3-0)
10. Amador Valley (2-1)
11. Liberty (2-1)
12. Monte Vista (3-0)
13. Windsor (0-1-1)
14. Campolindo (1-1-1)
15. Acalanes (0-3)

Thought Bubble: The top three looks solid in the North Coast Section, but there are a handful of teams that could make an argument for No. 4 on down. The team that emerges will be a storyline to watch over the next month.

Central Coast Section

1. Serra (3-0)
2. St. Francis-Mountain View (1-2)
3. Los Gatos (2-1)
4. Riordan (2-1)
5. St. Ignatius (2-1)
6. Mitty (3-0)
7. Valley Christian-San Jose (3-0)
8. Palma (2-1)
9. Wilcox (2-1)
10. Sacred Heart Prep (2-1)
11. Salinas (0-3)
12. Bellarmine (1-2)
13. Aptos (0-3)
14. Christopher (3-0)
15. Menlo-Atherton (1-2)

Thought Bubble: The top seven teams have five total losses with three losses to Top 10 teams and two losses to quality Southern California opponents. The WCAL is off this week before league play.

Northern Section

1. Pleasant Valley (2-0)
2. Foothill-Palo Cedro (1-2)
3. Enterprise (3-0)
4. Chico (3-0)
5. Orland (1-1)

Thought Bubble: We have a ranked matchup in the Northern Section this week as Orland travels to Shasta. Orland, the lone non-EAL team in the Top 5, lost to Enterprise 39-35 in the opener.

Oakland

1. McClymonds (2-0)
2. Oakland Tech (1-1)
3. Castlemont (1-1)

Thought Bubble: It was a 4-0 week for the OAL with McClymonds moving into the Top 20 after beating Bishop O’Dowd. The Dragons play three OAL teams this month with a win over Skyline and the loss to McClymonds. They play Castlemont on Friday.

San Francisco

1. Lincoln-San Francisco (1-2)
2. Balboa (0-2)
3. Lowell (1-0)

Thought Bubble: Balboa is 0-2 but both losses have come to 3-0 teams (Wakulla-Flordia and St. Vincent). They face potentially their toughest game of the year on Friday at Casa Grande.
