Cif transfer rules

Specifically 207.b(3). Any thoughts or insight on this . Sounds like if you went to Prep school and try to come back you have to play JV or sit out 1yr. How will this affect those like Vyctorius Miller at Crean Lutheran , Zion Sensley Riordan . I hear Phillips was told he would be denied coming back to Modesto Christian . How many others does this rule ?

NCP Football Top 20: Four Teams from WCAL are in the Rankings

1. Serra (5-0)

With each passing week, the gap between Serra and the rest of Northern California seems to get wider. In a 45-17 win over St. Francis, the Padres led 31-3 at the half and got more than 300 passing yards from senior Maealiuaki Smith. Serra has given up 10 points in the first half this season.

2. De La Salle (4-2)

The Spartans rushed for more than 200 yards and the defense pitched a shutout in a 21-0 win over McClymonds. The defense had 8.5 tackles for loss led by three from Chris Biller. De La Salle is off this week before an October 13 meeting with San Ramon Valley.

3. St. Mary’s-Stockton (5-1)

Freshman Osani Gayles had touchdown runs of 63 and 57 yards and the Rams led 42-0 at the half en route to a 55-0 win over Lodi. Three of their final four games are on the road starting with West on Friday.

4. Folsom (4-2)

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 14-0 lead and then exploded for 28 fourth quarter points to move past Oak Ridge 42-21. Ryder Lyons threw for more than 300 yards and connected with Brian Ray III on three touchdowns.

5. Oak Ridge (5-1)

Oak Ridge was tied with Folsom at 14 going into the fourth quarter, but fell to the Bulldogs 42-21 for a 20th straight loss in this series. Erick Orme Jr. rushed for 85 yards and three touchdowns. Next up is a trip to Del Oro.

6. San Ramon Valley (5-0)

The Wolves were off last week after completing their non-league and will play at Clayton Valley Charter on Friday. Through the first half of the year, they have scored at least 35 points in each game and only have given up more than 14 points once.

7. Pittsburg (5-0)

Pittsburg finished the non-league undefeated as Marley Alcantara had 117 yards and a touchdown to Noah Quesada in a 37-27 win over Los Gatos. The Pirates also grabbed three interceptions with Jadyn Hudson returning his pick for a score.

8. Central Catholic (4-2)

The Raiders ran for more than 300 yards (at 12 yards per carry) and Tyler Wentworth had four touchdown passes in a 47-7 win over East Union. Trace Hernandez and Brooklyn Cheek each had two touchdown catches while the defense grabbed three interceptions.

9. Grant (5-1)

Two league games and two 48-0 wins for the Pacers after they beat McClatchy this past Thursday. In their two toughest games this year, Grant beat Los Gatos 22-21 and lost to Oak Ridge 21-18.

10. Rocklin (6-0)

Junior Derek Keeley had five rushing touchdowns and the defense held Whitney to less than 150 total yards in a 42-3 win. Senior John Correa had four tackles for loss. This week, Rocklin hosts Folsom after beating the Bulldogs at home in 2021.

11. St. Francis (2-3)

St. Francis has alternated losses and wins this season with the defeats coming against undefeated Helix and Serra and NorCal’s No. 2 team De La Salle. This week provides a good measuring stick when it hosts St. Ignatius.

12. Riordan (4-1)

Riordan makes a big jump as one of two remaining undefeated teams in the WCAL after it beat Valley Christian 42-17. Michael Mitchell Jr. threw a league record six touchdown passes with five different receivers getting a score.

13. Manteca (4-2)

Bryson Davis was back in action and had 137 yards and a touchdown in a 42-7 win over Kimball. As a team, the Buffaloes rushed for 334 yards. They travel to Sierra on Friday to start a stretch of three road games over the next four weeks.

14. Granite Bay (4-2)

Junior Carter Jackson had 15 carries for 270 yards and four touchdowns and senior quarterback Lucas Gruia had two touchdown passes and two touchdown runs in a 53-28 win over Del Oro.

15. Del Oro (5-1)

Despite 278 passing yards and two touchdowns from Caden Pinnick, Del Oro took its first loss of the season to Granite Bay 53-28. Tommy Poe had seven catches for 155 yards.

16. McClymonds (2-2)

Strong red zone defense helped McClymonds play into the fourth quarter at De La Salle before losing 21-0. The Warriors now turn their attention to the OAL and will host Castlemont on October 13.

17. California (4-2)

California won an EBAL crossover game with a 41-17 win over Granada. The Grizzlies have now scored at least 40 points three times. Their two losses have come against undefeated San Juan Hills and Pittsburg.

18. Los Gatos (3-2)

In a 37-27 loss to Pittsburg, AJ Minyard threw for 262 yards and two touchdowns and got more than 100 rushing yards from Boxer Kopcsak-Yeung. Both of the Wildcats’ losses have been to Top 10 teams.

19. Marin Catholic (5-0)

The Wildcats gave up four points per game during the non-league. They host Tamalpais on Saturday with a regular season finale against San Marin looming on November 4.

20. St. Ignatius (3-2)

Soren Hummel threw two touchdown passes to Pierce St. Geme as the Wildcats beat Bellarmine 31-30. However, it was a touchdown run from Cameron Jones with less than a minute left that proved to be the difference. On Friday, St. Ignatius will travel to St. Francis.

PCAL WEEK 6

PCAL Week 6

Last week 8-4 Overall 58-25

Gabilan

As I predicted Palma would be 0-5 at the halfway point of the season and Alvarez in first place. (JK) If you did not hear Palma had to forfeit its first4 games for using an ineligible player. After last week’s loss to Monterey, they now sit at 0-5. This is being discussed on a different thread. With the Gabilan being down “competitive” this year Palma still has a chance for 4th place or even 5th and enough points to make the playoffs. Monterey had by far one of their best victories in recent memory. Congratulations to Alvarez for its victory of Hollister, welcome back to the Gabilan in 2024.

Fri 09/29 Alvarez (Salinas, CA) at Aptos (CA), 7:30pm – Monterey beating Palma was a surprise, but Alvarez beating Hollister? Wow!!! Don’t think they can repeat the magic. Aptos 34-14

Fri 09/29 Palma (Salinas, CA) at Hollister (CA), 7:30pm
– If Palma wants to keep it +35 year playoff streak alive, this becomes a must win situation. Hollister will be looking to get its mojo back after a stunning loss last week. Palma 31-7

Fri 09/29 Monterey (CA) at Soquel (CA), 7:30pm
- Monterey needs to stay focused to avoid a letdown vs a good Soquel squad. Soquel got is first taste of Gabilan football with a shut out loss to Salinas. Monterey 28-7

Mission North

The good news is that Santa Cruz fielded a team last week vs Watsonville. The bad news is they lost big again and have yet to score this season. And now they have forfeited this weekend’s game vs. Seaside. I hate seeing programs not be able to play. NMC had a very impressive win last week and will look to challenge Scott’s Valley and Seaside for the division title.

Fri 09/29 Monte Vista Christian (Watsonville, CA) at North Monterey County (Castroville, CA), MVC licking their wounds after their loss to Seaside, NMC looked good in shutting out St. Francis. I think NMC defense can slowdown MVC QB1 enough. NMC 24-10

Sat 09/30 St. Francis (Watsonville, CA) at Scotts Valley (CA), 2:00pm
- If St Francis can’t score vs NMC, probably going to have it’s hands full vs Scott’s Valley. This is not Scott’s Valley’s best defense ever, but it is still very good. Scott’s Valley 21-0

Mission South

Carmel had an incredible comeback last week after being down 12 with 2:24 left in the game to beat Alisal. This week they take on a good North Salinas, a win and they are in the driver’s seat for the title. Pacific Grove is still undefeated? Their schedule has been easy, and they should go to 6-0 before it gets considerably tougher (it is freaking killing me). But they have a good win’s vs Greenfield and Rancho San Juan.

Thu 09/28 Soledad (CA) at Alisal (Salinas, CA), 7:30pm- The CCS needs to step in and stop Thursday games from being played, especially after a Saturday Game. Alisal (and Carmel) are at a dis-advantage. Any ways despite picking up their first win (via game 1 forfeit) Soledad is just not executing well this year. Alisal 28-10

Thu 09/28 Carmel (CA) vs North Salinas (Salinas, CA) at Salinas Sports Complex (Salinas, CA), 7:00pm-
North Salinas has a chance because of Carmel’s very short week of practice. They also have a chance because they are one of the better stories in the PCAL this year with improvements on both sides of the ball. They are going to slow the game down and keep the ball away from Carmel. But Carmel’s offense is that good. Carmel 38-35

Fri 09/29 Rancho San Juan (Salinas, CA) at King City (CA)
, 7:30pm- Both teams have been a bit of a disappointment. King City a little bit larger. Rancho 17-10

Santa Lucia-

Man, chaos reigns in the Santa Lucia. Right when I thought SLV was turning a corner, they lay an egg vs Pajaro. Great to see Pajaro get a victory!! Harbor was averaging 38 points per game only pit up 14 Vs Gonzales? This still looks like a showdown between Greenfield and RLS for the title. Nobody else seems to be consistent enough.

Fri 09/29 Marina (CA) at Gonzales (CA), 7:30pm- Good news is Mariana should have their own stadium/Field next year. Bad news is the football team is still losing its best players to Monterey and Seaside. Gonzales 34-7

Fri 09/29 Harbor (Santa Cruz, CA) at Greenfield (CA), 7:00pm
- Harbor has been disappointing after such a promising start. Greenfield has been good this year. Greenfield 45-20

Sat 09/30 San Lorenzo Valley (Felton, CA) at Stevenson (Pebble Beach, CA),
2:00pm – RLS took care of business last week vs Marina, SLV not so much Vs Pajaro. This does feel like a little bit of a trap game, but RLS should be fine. RLS 28-7

Week 7 Football Recap

De La Salle beat McClymonds 21-0: Junior Dominic Kelley had two touchdown runs in support of a shutout effort by the Spartans’ defense. McClymonds’ ability to halt potential scoring drives in the red zone allowed them to remain competitive into the fourth quarter.

Folsom beat Oak Ridge 42-21: Army bound receiver Brain Ray had his best game of the season with three touchdown catches from sophomore Ryder Lyons, who also played his best game of the year, as the Bulldogs got an opening SFL win. Oak Ridge’s Erick Orme had three rushing touchdowns.

Escalon beat Hughson 21-14: In a game that at times matched teams that are mirror images of each other, Escalon was able to sustain drives and win the key TVL game. Donovan Rozevink had a quarterback dive for a score and a fourth quarter touchdown pass.

Granite Bay beat Del Oro 53-28: Carter Jackson had four rushing touchdowns and the Grizzlies turned in their best performance of the year with a season high 53 points. This marked the first loss of the season for Del Oro.

Rocklin beat Whitney 42-3: Heading into next week’s game against Folsom, Rocklin won its rivalry game against Whitney behind five rushing touchdowns from Derek Keeley.

Jesuit beat Clayton Valley Charter 26-0: In scoring a win for the SJS over the NCS, the Marauders pitched a shoutout and got two touchdown runs from quarterback CJ Lee.

Pittsburg beat Los Gatos 37-27: The Pirates led by two at halftime and again by two in the third quarter after both teams traded touchdowns, but 14 straight points allowed them to gain control.

Salesian beat St. Patrick-St. Vincent 47-19: Salesian led 20-19 at the half before outsourcing the Bruins 27-0 over the final 24 minutes. It marks the first loss of the season for St. Patrick-St. Vincent.

St. Vincent beat Fortuna 22-15: The Mustangs got a fourth quarter touchdown for its best win of the season.

Merced beat Patterson 45-17: Patterson got within six points (23-17) in the second half before Merced scored the final 22 points. Merced’s losses have come against one loss Downey and Top 10 ranked Central Catholic.

NCP Football Player Notebook: Standout Linemen to Watch

Drew Cunningham 6-foot-4, 225 pounds LB De La Salle (2024)

Cunningham had a season high 11 tackles while playing both ways for the Spartans in a win at Folsom. He can line up at outside linebacker or defensive end, but in either spot, he has proven to be one of the biggest hitters in the region. He has offers from Army, San Diego, Columbia, Penn and Yale.

Rayne Mayo 6-foot-2, 285 pounds OL Valley Christian-San Jose (2024)

Mayo has the strength and agility to be an impact player in the run game. He is very good at getting outside to pick up blocks, but is also good at straight ahead blocks. A solid run game has helped Valley Christian get out to a 4-0 start.

Ivan De Silva 6-foot-6, 250 pounds DE Placer (2025)

De Silva is the latest lineman to know of from Placer. He has very good size and has good strength at the point of attack. He sets the edge well and has 16 tackles and two sacks this season.

Julian McMahan 6-foot-2, 185 pounds RB Monte Vista (2025)

McMahan has been one of the stars of the first half of the season with 601 yards and eight touchdowns through five games. Last week against Campolindo, he had 19 carries for 133 yards. McMahan has really good size, has good change of direction ability and is tough to bring down once he reaches the second level.

Michael Mitchell Jr. 5-foot-10, 175 pounds QB Riordan (2026)

Mitchell has been at the forefront of Riordan’s attack with 1,262 yards and nine touchdowns while completing 68 percent of his passes. He has good footwork and can push the ball down the field with accuracy. Mitchell threw for a season high 359 yards this past week against St. Ignatius.

My day at Riordan

Delightful. How else to describe a visit to Riordan's tidy, compact campus off the former Phelan Avenue Saturday afternoon? It was our first in five years. The weather was stunning, the views out toward the old, abandoned reservoir land terrific. The football game that pitted San Francisco neighbor St. Ignatius against the home team became almost secondary. Almost.

Riordan authorities have done a splendid job of renovating and jamming as many athletic amenities onto a very limited site as possible (the lack of a turfed practice field cannot be helpful, especially with the new coed component). With no bleachers on the visitors' side of the multi-purpose field, seating capacity is inadequate for an important game like Saturday's. Well over 2,000 fans attended the affair and too many of them had to stand. It didn't seem to matter much, however.

With no actual restrooms available, a row of portable loos (not good at all for the handicapped) stood like blue sentinels near the excellent tri-tip grilling operation. Since a baseball diamond intrudes partially onto the football field (all on artificial turf), we wound up sitting on ancient, well-preserved Candlestick Park seats along the first base line at one point. Very nice. But viewing there was less than wonderful.

Parking, of course, is problematic but that's always the case in a city like SF. The public address system is poor but that may be a product of rules limiting sound volume at a field that tightly abuts residential properties on two sides. There were no cheer squads for either school. Perhaps the most attractive aspect of the Riordan football experience is the school's nattily-attired marching band, without doubt the finest and most melodious in that urban community. High marks for them.

As for the ballgame itself, a 41-34 Riordan victory, it did not lack action, good, bad and, sometimes, ugly. Far too many glitches, gaffes and goofs by both units. The referees were busy. But Riordan was clearly the stronger outfit, bigger, faster, deeper. On balance, the Riordan football experience is worth a try. It's different, unique in many ways, nothing like that found to the south in the WCAL's more spacious and accommodating suburban venues.

One more thing. We found nothing but friendly, helpful individuals at the entrance gates and at the field itself. High marks for one and all when it comes to people skills and organization. Nice work. We'll be back, seating availability or not. Those tri-tips beckon.

Bryan Woo, finishing up solid rookie season with Mariners

Bryan Woo out of Alameda HS/2018, finishing up his rookie season with Mariners. His 1st MLB start was in early June again the Rangers.
got tossed after the 2nd inning with 6 earned runs.. settled down for much of the season.... but faced the Rangers again this past Sunday and got lit up again..
should get one more start to finish season... currently at 4 and 5 with 4.39 era..

1. Pleasant Valley (2-2)
2. Chico (4-1)
3. Foothill-Palo Cedro (2-2)
4. Enterprise (4-1)
5. Orland (3-1)

Thought Bubble: It was a tough out of section week for the Northern Section with Chico falling to West Park, Pleasant Valley losing at Central Catholic and Enterprise taking a loss at undefeated Redwood. Foothill did shutout Fortuna 42-0 in giving them their first loss.

Oakland

1. McClymonds (2-1)
2. Oakland Tech (1-2)
3. Castlemont (1-3)

Thought Bubble: Castlemont’s three losses have come by a combined 21 points to undefeated St. Patrick-St. Vincent, 2-3 Bishop O’Dowd and one loss Mt. Diablo. Undefeated Oakland faces its toughest test to date against undefeated Atascadero.

San Francisco

1. Lincoln-San Francisco (1-3)
2. Balboa (1-3)
3. Lowell (1-2)

Thought Bubble: The AAA starts this week as Lincoln travels to Lowell in a matchup of the top contenders for the league title. Galileo and Washington, which play on Saturday, have both lost to Oakland.

WCAL Season Finale - Mitty and Riordan Co-champions!

An interesting non-league to say the least, that appears to have leveled the playing field…Recent news of King Wilhite’s surprise mid-season departure, transfers now coming off their sit-out periods and some key injuries are in play as league play kicks off. Who you got?
Projected 2023 Finish
  1. Mitty and Riordan - Tie
  2. Serra
  3. St. Ignatius
  4. St. Francis
  5. SHC
  6. Bellarmine
  7. Valley Christian
Week 1 Games
  • Mitty @ Bellarmine
  • Riordan @ St. Ignatius
  • SHC @ Serra
  • Valley Christian @ St. Francis

Mitty and Riordan appear to be the favorites. Mitty gets a 6-3 transfer eligible. Riordan gets transfers in 6-3 jr. Kaia Berridge, 6-5 jr. Nate Tshamala and jr 6-8 Lolo Ta’aga. Serra appears to getting 2 transfers eligible. St. Francis loses 6-8 Dallas Washington to transfer. Don’t know about the remaining teams, but there are quite amount of freshman expected to make major contributions to their teams. SI has 3 freshman that could start in Labagh, Whitley and Hutcherson. Riordan has 2freshman in Hilman with an offer already from UCSB. Kuminga, kid brother of the Dubs’, Jonathan, expected to make his debut on Wednesday. Mitty dealing with injuries to Derek Sangster and Paran. Not sure their status for return, but it seems it has not hurt the Monarch’s play. Here’s to a great 2023 season!

NCP Football Top 20: Teams Gear Up for League Play

1. Serra (4-0)

Serra led 35-0 en route to a 61-0 league opening win over Sacred Heart Cathedral. The Padres have given up 21 points through four games heading into next week’s home game against St. Francis.

2. De La Salle (3-2)

The shuffle for No. 2 takes another turn this week with De La Salle back atop tier two. The Spartans have now won three in a row after rushing for more than 300 yards and controlling time of possession in a 14-7 win at Folsom. Next up is McClymonds.

3. St. Mary’s-Stockton (4-1)

The Rams get the slight edge this week in part due to their overall body of work and wins over Central Catholic, Clovis West, Manteca and Bishop Amat. The latest was a 41-31 win in Southern California. Christopher Maghoney had 10 carries for 123 yards and two scores.

4. Folsom (3-2)

The Bulldogs played Serra and Folsom this year to one score games, but couldn’t capture a victory in either marquee matchup. The schedule doesn’t get much easier with the Sierra Foothill League opening against Oak Ridge and Rocklin the next two weeks.

5. Oak Ridge (5-0)

Coming off a bye week, Oak Ridge will travel to Folsom after playing a close section final against the Bulldogs a year ago. The Trojans are giving up 11 points per game.

6. San Ramon Valley (5-0)

The Wolves scored 42 first quarter points in a 66-12 win over Liberty as senior Luke Baker threw for 364 yards and five scores. San Ramon Valley hits the road this week against Clayton Valley Charter before a home date with De La Salle on October 13.

7. Pittsburg (4-0)

Pittsburg was off this week following a high scoring, back and forth win over California. The Pirates return to action this Friday at Top 20 ranked Los Gatos. They have scored at least 38 points three times this season.

8. St. Francis-Mountain View (2-2)

St. Francis got 167 rushing yards and four touchdowns from Kingston Keanaaina to help pace a 42-20 win over Mitty. The Lancers got out to a 21-0 lead in scoring a season high in points. Next up is a trip to No. 1 Serra.
