Some Irish history

This evening in San Francisco, Serra, the No.1 prep football team in Northern California (and in the midst of its best three-season run in school history), will visit Kezar Stadium for a WCAL contest with Sacred Heart Cathedral. The Irish are currently winless. They have a very difficult assignment tonight. That's not unusual for them. SHC is not blessed with a gaudy resume' of football excellence. In its long history, the inner-city school, located not far from the Tenderloin, has won a grand total of one regular-season league title (in the AAA in 1957 when it did so and then lost in the league's playoffs). The Irish, which have very limited on-campus football facilities, have never threatened to grab a WCAL crown after leaving the AAA late in the 1960s, following (rather reluctantly, by the way) St. Ignatius into the re-formed, re-energized and re-named CAL. The Irish, who have had some notable success outside the WCAL in the equity-based CIF playoff format in recent years, deserve some real credit for hanging in there in a league regarded as one of NorCal's most competitive. It hasn't been easy for them. But they persist. Good for them.

EBAL Girls Flag Football

My Son is Coaching girls Flag Football, so I decided I would go out and watch. I had very low expectations on what I would witness, and to be honest the first couple of games of the season weren't real clean in terms of playing. However over the past few weeks, the girls are figuring it out! What I am witnessing out there is athleticism, aggression, accuracy, great play calling and good route running from the top teams. Some of these girls are ball hawks! This game will continue to grow in popularity no doubt! Kudos to the young women out there being the pioneers of a new sport. If you are around the area should go check out a game. Tuesday nights (when no other football is on until MACtion starts!) It is 7 on 7 flag format with some different rules but very entertaining! I have no doubt in a few years Colleges will be coming by to see these girls accel at football, because it will show intangibles that will help them be noticed for their sport of choice.

The curious case of a former “5-Star” Northern California QB

I will start off by saying I would never throw a juvenile athlete under the bus. Everyday there’s seemingly more and more things I personally dislike about prep sports but I also understand that my time has come and gone. I am simply a fan and a parent at this point like most of us all.

Anywho, I was on Facebook earlier this week when I received a request from a new sports academy in Florida that goes by the name “Specially Fit Academy” (SFA). I followed a few links only to find it to be more of what I perceived to be a Bishop Sycamore type of academy than an actual High School. I go through a few photos and recognize a familiar “face” if you will (I won’t say kid…………). That face turned out to be none other than former Edison-Stockton QB Safdar McCrary!

As most people, I was pleased to see that Safdar is still getting after it! Which also lead me down the rabbit hole in an attempt to figure his path to SFA.

With the help of Google, MaxPreps, HUDL and Amazon Prime Video of all things, I was able to string together McCrary’s career timeline up to this point.

2018-2019: Castlemont HS (Oakland, CA)
2019-2020: Edison HS (Stockton, CA)
2020-2021: Alcoa HS (Alcoa, TN)
2020-2021: Sandy Creek HS (Tyrone, GA)
2021-2022: American Collegiate Academy (Clearwater, FL)
2022-2023: Speights Academy (St. Petersburg, FL)
2023-2024: Specially Fit Academy (Dover, FL)

Upon doing a quick google search of both Speights Academy and SFA I was able to determine that Speights Academy is ran by former Warriors F Mareesse Speights and serves as a Prep School which allows former High School athletes a gap year to compile additional film needed to get to the next level. No harm, no foul.

However, SFA brands themselves as a High School who have this year played Sebastian River HS (Sebastian, FL), TRU Prep Academy (Miami, FL) who claim to be a K-12 academy via the school’s official website and have games scheduled against Joshua Christian Academy (Jacksonville, FL), Seffner Christian High School (Seffner, FL), Tampa Catholic High School (Tampa, FL) and a number of other games against other high schools.

I reiterate that I would never throw a juvenile athlete under the bus. They’re kids! But this guy right here…….i would like to have a few words with him….over a few beers perhaps.

PCAL Week 5

PCAL Week 5- Start of league play.

Last week 9-4 Overall 50-21

Gabilan

Last week the Gabilan went 6-1 in the crossover games (Including Hollister forfeit win over Santa Cruz). The only team to lose was Alvarez, as they lost to one of the top “B” programs; Carmel. I still stand by my statement that the Gabilan is down this year, but they are still the #1 league is this area. But this year the difference between 1-6 maybe a lot less than in years past. Which should give us some great matchups every week. Still Like Salinas to finish up top, but Palma and Monterey could be there as well. I would be surprised if any team went through the schedule without a loss.

Fri 09/22 Alvarez (Salinas, CA) at Hollister (CA), 7:30pm- Both teams have beaten Oak Grove for their only on field victory. Alvarez won by 8 Hollister by 37. Hollister 45-16

Fri 09/22 Monterey (CA) vs Palma (Salinas, CA) at Salinas Sports Complex (Salinas, CA), 7:30pm-
Best game of the week locally. Will Monterey speed be able to shut/slow down Palma WR1? Yes. Will Palma size and depth wear down Monterey upfront? Yes. Not to mention Monterey HC was old OC at Palma. Both coaches know each other. This is a great matchup. Taking the home team Chieftains. Palma 24-23

Fri 09/22 Salinas (CA) at Soquel (CA), 7:00pm-
Salinas finally found some offense this past week in an impressive victory over Seaside. Soquel had a slug fest with Scott’s Valley. Soquel is a team that like to pound the ball and control tempo, I don’t think Salina’s defense will allow that. Salinas 24-14

Mission North

Scott’s Valley played Soquel tough and despite their big loss to Salinas, I still think Seaside will be tough to beat in this league. However, they have an big match up with MVC this week, winner will probably be in drivers seat for 2nd place and a chance at playoffs. Scott’s Valley s (bye this week) is still the favorite.

Fri 09/22 Seaside (CA) at Monte Vista Christian (Watsonville, CA), 7:30pm- This game intrigues me. Both teams had big losses last week vs. Upper Gabilan Division teams. Both teams also have a victory over Ranch San Juan. Who bounces back? I like Seaside here. Seaside 28-27

Fri 09/22 St. Francis (Watsonville, CA) at North Monterey County (Castroville, CA), 7:30pm-
Another very close match up. NMC had an easier than expected victory over Harbor, while St. Francis closer than expected victory over Pajaro. Taking the home team NMC 17-10

Fri 09/22 Watsonville (CA) at Santa Cruz (CA),
7:30pm- I Hope this game is played as it is one of the longest rivalries in the West Coast. If played Watsonville should prevail easily. Watsonville 35-7

Mission South

Carmel has not played that tough of a schedule, but they di beat up an “A” league oppent in Alvarez and they are scoring a lot of points this year. They are the clear front runner in this division. Alisal and North Salinas should battle it out for second place. PG is 4-0, but they have played a weak schedule. It would be cool if both PG and Carmel were undefeated at the Shoe game this year. But I just don’t see it.

Fri 09/22 North Salinas (Salinas, CA) at Soledad (CA), 7:30pm- North Salinas has been one of the better PCAL stories this year. Soledad, a bit of a disappointment. North Salinas 24-0

Sat 09/23 Alisal (Salinas, CA) at Carmel (CA), 2:00pm-
Top 2 teams in the Mission North (in my opinion). Contrasting styles of Play. Carmel will try to outscore you, while Alisal is ground and pound. I just don’t know if Alisal can stop the big play. If Carmel gets up by 2 scores its over. Carmel 45-21

Sat 09/23 Pacific Grove (CA) at Rancho San Juan (Salinas, CA), 2:00pm-
PG is 4-0 (I just threw up a little in my mouth). Their schedule has been pretty soft, but they did beat a solid Greenfield team last week. Rancho has played a little tougher schedule and may have a little more depth. Rancho 21-14

Santa Lucia

Greenfield almost came back to knock off PG, while the defending Champions RLS Pirates took down King City. These 2 teams should battle for the division crown. SLV had a great win over Watsonville last week, while Harbor had a reality check courtesy of North Monterey County.

Fri 09/22 Stevenson (Pebble Beach, CA) vs Marina (CA) at Monterey Peninsula College (Monterey, CA), 7:30pm- RLS is just simply better than Marina this year. RLS 28-7

Sat 09/23 Gonzales (CA) at Harbor (Santa Cruz, CA), 6:00pm –
This should be a close matchup. Going to take Gonzales after their big win last week. Gonzales 28-27

Sat 09/23 Pajaro Valley (Watsonville, CA) at San Lorenzo Valley (Felton, CA), 12:30pm-
SLV is starting to get things turned around. Don’t think they can challenge Greenfield and RLS, but things seem to be going in the right direction again. SLV 34-14

Week 6 Game Previews

FRIDAY

#3 De La Salle (2-2) at #2 Folsom (3-1)

These two teams have met seven times in the past five seasons with all the meetings coming with the teams in the Top 5 of the NCP Rankings. Folsom, coming off a bye, have been stellar on defense this season and have a dynamic quarterback in sophomore Ryder Lyons. De La Salle has seen its run game pick up the past two weeks led by junior Dominic Kelley.

St. Mary’s (3-1) at Bishop Amat (1-3)

St. Mary’s dropped its first game of the season this past week at De La Salle and now will travel to Southern California. Three of Bishop Amat’s games have been decided by one possession with the largest defeat being 11 points. All three of its losses have come against quality competition.

Vacaville (2-2) at El Cerrito (4-0)

El Cerrito’s top win this season came in the opener when it gave Amador Valley its only loss. The Gauchos are giving up seven points per game in the three on-field results this season. Vacaville comes in on a two game losing skid against Top 20 ranked Granite Bay and undefeated Cardinal Newman.

Rocklin (4-0) at Tracy (4-0)

Tracy is giving up just a shade under 14 points per game, including 13 last week against Downey. The Bulldogs are averaging 287 rushing yards per game. Six different Rocklin receivers have caught touchdowns from sophomore Reeve Slone. Defensively, the Thunder are giving up nine points per game.

Campolindo (1-1-1) at Monte Vista (3-1)

Monte Vista boasts one of the top offenses in the East Bay with players like quarterback Brayden Turner and running back Julian McMahan. All three of Campolindo’s games have been decided by one possession with an overtime win and a tie. Amador Valley has wins over both teams with a 6-0 win over Campolindo and a 41-34 victory against Monte Vista.

Monterey (3-0) vs. Palma (3-1)

Monterey has scored at least 35 points in each game and have averaged 254 rushing yards. Five different players are averaging at least 50 years. Palma will look to continue to find offense outside of senior Logan Saldate, who has 346 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

Inderkum (4-1) at Woodcreek (4-0)

These are the two best teams in the Capital Valley Conference with Inderkum winning four straight games since losing the opener to Del Oro. During the win streak, the Tigers have posted three shutouts. Woodcreek’s Hakeem Anderson has five rushing touchdowns and the defense is giving up seven points per game.

SATURDAY

St. Ignatius (2-1) at #19 Riordan (2-1)

The WCAL season starts with Riordan bringing in its potent passing attack with quarterback Michael Mitchell Jr. and wide receiver Chris Lawson. St. Ignatius has improved throughout the season with wins over Jesuit and Cathedral Catholic after losing to San Ramon Valley. The Wildcats won the fourth quarters in both of their wins.

Bellarmine (1-2) at Valley Christian (3-0)

Bellarmine senior quarterback Parker Threatt has proven to be one of the best playmakers in the Bay Area. The Bells’ losses have come to Top 20 ranked McClymonds and Monte Vista. The Warriors, who are having a bounce back year, are giving up less than nine points per game in beating CCS ranked teams Wilcox and Salinas.

Enterprise (4-0) at Redwood (3-0)

It starts for Enterprise with junior quarterback Jaylen Johnson, who has 880 passing yards and 403 rushing yards (team high). Redwood, which projects as the No. 3 team in the MCAL, played a mobile quarterback led Rancho Cotate squad and used a fourth quarter comeback to win 35-34.

Jeremiah Faumuina (Arroyo 2025) Signs with Overtime Elite!

Jeremiah Faumuina (2025) Arroyo High has signed with OTE after having a stellar summer with Evolve Performance AAU. Jeremiah and Evolve turned heads in the Adidas Circuit beating some monsters at the 3SSB Championship in Rock Hill, SC.
