Central Catholic Player Notes

Couple of players stood out for Central Catholic besides Justin Rice.

Hunter Petlansky QB (2016) 6-foot-3, 225 pounds: Strongly built QB, average thrower, but creates well with his legs and has the knack for big plays you look for at the position. He was huge in the second half for the Raiders. He has a chance to push for playing time at Columbia.

Austin Escobar LB (2016) 6-foot-1, 220 pounds: Was a disruptive force against Oakdale. Reads plays well, shoots the gaps to get into the backfield. Question if he has the right physical traits to stay at linebacker (tweener), but should be playing somewhere next year.

CCS Girls Volleyball in 4 of 5 state divisions... (waiting for Football)

OK - got to do something while I'm waiting the the NorCal football games to start.

Four of the 5 state girls volleyball divisions has CCS teams playing for state title tomorrow. And three of those teams are from the WCAL league - crazy strong!!!! Also amazing, all the NorCal teams, including NCS' Branson, are from the immediate SF Bay Area.

DI - Menlo-Atherton vs Redondo Beach
DII - Mitty vs Village Christian (Mitty
DIII - Valley Christian vs Olympian
DIV - Norte Dame vs Laguna Blanca
DV - Branson vs Upland Christian Academy

Norcal Small Schools Open Division

Getting bored at first round playoff games so thought I'd look ahead to regionals small school open division.
The rules are simple enough. Teams must win a section title and have enrollment of 1200 or less.

Seems Central Catholic is the obvious first choice should they win SJS D3 section. They will have to get through Oakdale again (assuming both make it thru intermediate rounds), which could go either way based on their previous matchup.

Their opponent choice is not as clear. If Palma of Salinas comes out as Champion of one of the CCS Open divisions, they have a good argument. But the winner of NCS D4 has an equal, if not slightly better claim, as the two favorites, Marin Catholic and Cardinal Newman are headed for a presumable showdown in the Finals.

I'm not familiar with other smaller schools in the SJS, so you SJS guys/gals please fill us in.

McClymonds will most likely win OAK and have a hat in the ring, and so might Sacred heart Prep (CCS) depending if they can win a section Championship.

If CC wins SJS D3 they're in, which would leave a choice between a Palma and NCS D4 Champion as their opponent. Could be a 50/50 toss up. If Oakdale wins SJS D3, then it would seem likely a Palma vs. NCS D4 Champion. If CC and Palma both lose the section Final, then NCS D4 is in, and their choice of opponent really opens up, but could end up being McClymonds. I don't mean to slight the northern Section teams. I'm just ignorant of who's up there and meets the criteria, so Northern fans please chime in. And are there any teams in Central Section who could qualify?

St. Francis vs. Oak Grove

This weekend's matchup between St. Francis and Oak Grove is highly intriguing. St. Francis defeated Oak Grove earlier this year and has been steadily improving its running and passing game as the season has progressed. The Lancer defense has remained stout and it's first-team defense continues to be stingy on the opponents running game.

Oak Grove has had some recent statement wins over Mitty and Valley Christian and looks poised and capable of making it three wins over WCAL opponents in a row. I myself will be rooting for the Lancers, but I can see Oak Grove getting very hyped and able to win this CCS D-2 Open matchup. How do other folks see it? This is a clash between two foes who know each other well and I am just so excite about this matchup.

I like WoodCreek to be top NorCal team-Who you got and why.

They have the centerpiece in 6'10 Jordan Brown (Tim Duncan 2.0), top 5 sophomore in the nation. They have 6'6 and 6'4 x-fer's from Australia and China who can both ball. Also another back court x-fer. They have a few solid back court players returning as well who could surprise some people this yr. If the coaching staff does their job this team should represent the north in the state title game.
