Hannah Huffman

I wondered if Hannah Huffman had made the right choice by going to Notre Dame, because she risked sitting on the bench for her whole career in a program like that -- and isn't it more fun to play a lot?

Well, Hannah and her family clearly made the right choice, because even though she doesn't get big minutes, she was the one on the floor, guarding SEC Player of the Year and WNBA first-round pick Tiffany Mitchell, with Notre Dame up one and 15 seconds left (or whatever).

I think Notre Dame might have been in a box-and-one (I haven't tried to look), but Huffman, not noted for her defense at Carondelet, made Mitchell have to use a screen, and then tipped away a pass when she double-teamed her, sending Notre Dame to the championship game.

Congrats to Hannah and the Irish ... I don't know if you can ask for more than making a huge play on national TV that gives your team a shot at a national title.

Hitting

I'm really wondering about pro ball but players have to learn somewhere. Whats going on with hitting at the MLB level? Kids are playing more baseball than ever in the US at an earlier age but the hitting at the highest level seems to be getting worse. I know that philosophy and execution of relief pitching plays a major part in it but still. Runs are way down and strikeouts are way up. I picked a random year of 86 and there were like 4 teams that had north of 1000 k's. Look at 14 and just 1 team (Kansas City) under 1000 k's.

My question is what's being taught at the younger levels. I know that advance metrics has placed more emphasis on power but to hit the ball hard you have to first hit the ball. Just about every guy in pro ball has a power hitting approach at the plate. Is this the same on the lower levels? Is everyone being taught nowadays to load up and rake? Like you got a kid in high school 5'8 155 is he being taught to drive the ball as hard as possible or to hit it where the defense isnt? I know on the pro level you hardly see any slap hitters. The only one I can think of is Ichiro. Today there are a handful of true contact hitters when in the 80's I could name allot of guys who were just trying to put the ball in play, find a hole, and move the line. Now, everybody wants to go deep when they may only have warning track power.

My question is are there things being taught at the younger levels that effecting hitting at the pro level?

One thing I will say is that allot of hitters have become too mechanical in their swing and never come out of it. Bonds is a example of a player who had an approach and swing and refused to come out of it. You could shift the whole team down the right field line and lob the ball underhand on the outside part of the plate and Bonds would still pull it. It wasn't until the the Giants made a run at the title around the last few weeks of the season that Bonds decided to basically stick the bat out there and lob the ball into left. Now with Bonds he hit so well for power you could live with it. With the new generation I'm not so sure you can live with that approach. Like a guy nowadays may have a swing built for middle in but the ball is on the outside edge and he still take the middle in swing. Back in the day you tried to do that to a guy like Gwynn he would go to the other side of the plate however and get the ball where he needed to.

My question is are hitters over coached? Are they losing the instincts needed to hit at the highest level and becoming robots?

#1 SMS vs #2 MD.........CA FINEST

Clash of the CA Titans: The two top coaches in CA square off:

Wow Finally! The Open Championship! CA top 16 teams now down to the two best!

The two legendary HS coaches face off for the CA golden crown. The MD coach is on the brink to be the first coach to win NIKE TOC and the Open title in the same year. Incredible! The SMS coach is trying to finish the season as the Open champion and possible mythical national champions. Awesome!

This is a very evenly match game. (MD)The #1 player in the country KLS with a tremendous senior PG and a UCLA bound junior center.(SMS) Will try to almost mimic LBP last year letting the young players speed bring home the title. Maybe the SMS talented freshman will be the best player on the court? Like last year LBP freshman was?

MD coach will try to impose his defensive strategy slowing the game down and taking away the 3's from SMS, forcing SMS to be patient on offense and run sets. On offense MD will look to get easy baskets beating the press, that will include not just lay ups but transition 3's for KLS as well. Lot's of screens will be set for KLS. "Run on offense and get back on defense guard the 3".

SMS will press to set a fast tempo looking for turnovers = easy baskets. Possibly going to BOX-1 in the 4th. SMS on offense will push to get baskets before MD can set up on defense, passing ahead to the freshman. SMS loves to drive and kick for the 3. If the 3's are falling, SMS could win by a surprising margin. "Run & Gun"

One coach will have played his cards right and for the first time be crowned the King of CA Open.

My ticket is purchased, very much looking forward to this epic game!

My prediction is SMS coach holding up the Open trophy in victoty. SMS wins.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS THOUGHTS....and beyond

The last few days have been REALLY fun I have to admit. Has there ever been a more entertaining boys/girls state
championship set of games? Multiple overtime games and it ended with a 6-6 tie with the north girls winning 4 and the south boys winning 4.

HAAS was perfect...standing room only and the crowd was loud and electric!! Lets hope they keep it there for many years to come.

Other than Sierra canyon...I thought all the teams were where they should have been (Division wise)....Honestly how was SierraC NOT in the south open...3 state championships in a row now? The exact opposite of Miramonte...who in my opinion has been the team in the entire state most hosed by the open format.

But overall.......What a great way to end the HS basketball season!!

Its been entertaining reading all the arguments and petty insults on this sight all year....haha

and every once in awhile we even had some good adult discussions :)

just kidding STREAK ONE......most of the time it was good discussion....

Now on to the AAU circuit.....cant wait!!!

Interesting Non-Conference game

I was looking at Cal High on MaxPreps and it appears they have a road game on Sept 4 at Bell Gardens in southern California. Last years Bell Gardens team was ranked #611 in state. They are always ranked over the 500 mark in state. Other than a long bus ride, what does Cal High have to gain from a game like this? HAS? Any other Grizzly parents or fans?

The Riddell Flex

Can anybody share a little insight here. I ordered a Flex for my kid 2 months ago, I just contacted the Rep and he says there are 8000 on back order!! I won't be seeing it till end of May.... Popular helmet....Riddell has quality stuff but seems like they are always behind on the production side.

I beleive you are associated with this message board, if not, I appologise. From the CCS, what's with only posting WCAL scores. Certainly there are other teams deserving of mention. In the past, the top teams from the SCVAL have competed well with the WCAL, as has San Benito and others.
