AAU: A Hoops Cancer

Refreshing to see someone at the highest level of U.S. basketball telling a truth that needs to be heard loud and clear. Warriors head coach and U.S. Olympic team mentor Steve Kerr has stated that youth club basketball (or what passes for basketball) is counter-productive. In other words, the sport is not being taught to teens in that permissive environment. He almost surely had gifted athletes like James Wiseman in mind when he said it.

North Bay /classic

Some north bay news.

Cardinal newman continues a strong start to season improving to 13-0 and will take on Christopher (Salinas) in Sonoma County Classic semis. This is newman best start since the 2014-15.
In the other semis , Piner and Ukiah both are also off to red hot starts at 11-1 and meet tnite. Should be some good games over at Piner HS.

Another team to watch is Windsor (10-4) who has all time great Steve Kramer back coaching. Windsor started off slow with some football kids coming over late but don’t count them out. They played a loaded Justin Siena team tough a few weeks back.

Montgomery , took some lumps the last few weeks but battled Folsom (lost 60-58) and will play in Marin Catholic consolation champ today against central Catholic. I never count out the Vikings in D2.

Been a bit of a drought north of golden gate last few years but looks like some better ball being played now.

Justin Siena is def the best team in the greater Napa/Sonoma county area.

CCS Open - Third Game Results

Pinewood 71 Sacred Heart 50. Rumors of Pinewood’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. The Panthers finish undefeated in pool play, and move on to the finals to take on Mitty for the umpteenth consecutive year.

Mitty 85 Los Gatos 27. Mitty won its three pool games by an average of 58 points. Haley Hernandez played ferocious defense, McKenna Woliczko ran the floor like a gazelle, and Morgan Cheli displayed her usual brilliance helping the Monarchs to a 60-12 halftime lead. Only Coach Phillips’ mercy and a running clock kept Mitty under 100. Doc may have to summon Pinewood’s ancestors to keep things close in the finals.

Palo Alto 47 St. Ignatius 33. To those who say publics don’t belong in CCS Open, I give you the Vikings who knocked off not one, but two WCAL teams to finish second in their pool.

Crystal Springs 52 Branham 37. Terrific showing for the Gryphons in their maiden open voyage. The WBAL Co-Champs with Pinewood were seeded #8, but notched convincing road wins against Los Gatos (#4) and Branham (#5). These guys deserve a home game in Norcals.

Finally, Dear NFHS – If you are going to demand exclusive streaming rights to CCS games, maybe make sure the video feeds are working properly. As far as I can tell, not one of tonight’s Open games was available. Grandparents all over the country are up in arms.

NCS D1/D3/D5 Semifinals Picks

NCS D1:

Clayton Valley over Pittsburg: Pitt has been a really good story thus far, but I like the trio Clayton Valley has this year

Moreau Catholic over Cal: Should be a pretty close game, but I'll go with Moreau which has kind of flown under the radar this season

NCS D3:

Branson over Piedmont: Branson will have to keep AJ Harris in check, but I think they will enough and their top 4 or 5 guys will be too much

Pinole Valley over St. Pats: Pinole Valley has shown itself well in their Salesian matchups this year and they hold serve at home. If I had to pick one upset tonight, it would be this one.

NCS D5:

Urban. over Cloverdale: Don't know much about these teams, but will go with Urban at home. Three of the four playoff games these teams have played this year have been blowouts.

Head-Royce over San Domenico: Standout players can really impact lower division games and Head-Royce has a good one in Marcel Pierre-Louis
