random thoughts on Modesto Christian vs Lincoln (Stockton) CIF SJS playoff 2/17/23

** On 2/17/23, in the second round of the CIF SJS playoffs, Modesto Christian beat Lincoln (Stockton) in overtime, 60-56.

** MC’s San Diego State commit senior # 10 B.J. Davis is legit. I know that’s not breaking news, but he is the best player I have seen live and in person this season. Expect him to have an impact at San Diego State.

** Lincoln’s most efficient offensive weapon looks to be junior # 23 Quentin Thompson. Against MC, Thompson led Lincoln with 20 points. He can shoot the three, shoot the midrange, is excellent at getting to the rim, and can finish with either hand. Expect Thompson to have an excellent upcoming AAU season with West Coast Elite.

** A strange occurrence happened in the game towards the end of regulation. With 2:12 left on the game clock and Lincoln winning 51-49, MC’s BJ Davis went down with a cramp. It happened on the baseline near the MC bench. Part of his body was in bounds and part was out of bounds. Normally, in this circumstance, the player is quickly carted off and the cramp is tended to on the bench. However, the MC staff worked on Davis for several minutes right there and the game just stopped. I know that, in the case of a serious injury, the game is often stopped for several minutes. But I’ve watched enough basketball to know that for cramps the player is brought to the bench quickly and worked on there.

Let’s put it this way, the game was stopped long enough that Cheeto may or may not have walked out of the gym, purchased three of those excellent freshly baked cookies that the lady makes at the table in the foyer, eaten all of them, taken a super fat dookie in the nice restrooms behind the snack bar, called Mrs. Cheeto for a quick chat, walked back into the gym, counted all of the MC championship basketball banners in the gym, returned to my seat, and the referees were still standing there twiddling their thumbs not doing their job to get the game going.

Davis, being the player that he is, ended up having a huge impact on the remainder of the game. But it is very possible, I would even say likely, that Lincoln would have won that game in regulation with Davis on the bench as he should have been.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not knocking Davis or the MC staff. They knew what they were doing by not moving him and I would have tried the same if I were them.

I am, however, questioning the referees. If the referees get that game going quickly like normal, Lincoln wins that game in regulation.

** On MC’s website, the description of their school states:

“Modesto Christian offers a safe and healthy environment to nurture and encourage students to pursue excellence and exploration in academics, athletics and the arts; and for forging lifelong relationships. All teachers, faculty, and administration are called to a Christ-centered lifestyle, as well as Christ-centered work and service.”

As a free service to them, Cheeto has made a few suggested edits to their school description. I believe it would be more appropriate to read like this:

“Modesto Christian offers a safe and healthy environment to nurture and encourage students to pursue excellence and exploration in academics, athletics and the arts; and for forging lifelong relationships. But let’s be honest, we’re mostly just here for the athletics. All teachers, faculty, and administration are called to a Christ-centered lifestyle, as well as Christ-centered work and service. Modesto Christian definitely has a heart for international students. However, it has been put upon our heart to especially show our Christ-centered lifestyle to international students that are at least 6-foot-8 (2.03 meters) and can dunk.

I don’t really know anyone who works there or anything, but could someone please relay this potential updated website description to MC? Cheeto would appreciate it.

Nor-Cal Open Candidates 2-6-2023

League playoffs and then sectional playoffs will finalize C.I.F. Northern California Open selections. We still have a few teams lingering in the mix as the season ends and a few teams that go down to Divisional Playoffs do too upsets.
So many of the top teams can defeat each other on any night makes it for a healthy post season. Clearly this will be an 8-team Nor-Cal Open with so many elite programs vying to be Top Dog of Nor-Cal!!

Central Coast Section: Unless upsets I see two teams being selected.

Archbishop Riordan Crusaders 17-4, WCAL, MP#22
Archbishop Mitty Monarchs 17-4, WCAL, MP#16

Central Section: One will go Northern California and One will be in *Southern California Open.

Clovis West Golden Eagles 25-2, Tri-River, MP#15
*Saint Joseph Knights 21-6, 12-0 Mountain, MP# 63

North Coast Section: Loaded with top-tier teams that will likely have three maybe four Open selections.
+if they win NCS Open they will go to Nor-Cal Open

De La Salle Spartans 20-6, 7-2 EBAL, MP#21
Dougherty Valley Wildcats 23-3 EBAL, MP# 12
Salesian Pride 19-7, 10-0 Tri-County Rock, MP#49

+EBAL teams that may be included.
Dublin Gaels 18-8, 7-2EBAL, MP#51
San Ramon Valley Wolves 5-4 EBAL, MP#20

Sac-Joaquin Section: Same as NCS that 3, if not 4 teams selected for Nor-Cal Open

Folsom Bulldogs 23-2, 8-0 SFL, MP#8
Inderkum Tigers 23-2, 11-0 CVC, MP#18
Jesuit Marauders, 20-4, 9-0 Delta, MP# 42
Modesto Christian Crusaders 21-6, 11-0 TCAL, MP#44

Again those sections who have an Open may have a team win whose not mentioned. If their is an upset in any Open section, I feel the teams listed have a strong regular season resume to warrant an Open invitation.

CCS Open Final

Cannot recall two teams playing for that title with combined (now) 23 losses. SHC, to their credit, defeated Serra Friday at SCU for the second time in three tries. Very nice work. Miller and Mixon, again, made the difference. A tough double-matchup. Now the question becomes: Will the winner be considered for a NorCal Open bracket? Maybe not.

CCS Open - Second Game Results

Mitty 78 Branham 24. It wasn't quite that close. Perhaps for the first time in her Mitty career, McKenna Woliczko matched up with a girl that was considerably taller than she in Branham's Quinn Godfrey. It was no contest. Woliczko scored from everywhere en route to an 18 point first half. Morgan Cheli is in midseason form with dazzling buckets and assists.

Crystal Springs 39 Los Gatos 25. Lots of defense from Crystal, not a lot of offense from Los Gatos who was still missing its top scorer. Crystal pitched a shutout in the 4th quarter. Nice bounce back for the Gryphons in what has to be their first ever open win. Crystal Jr. Maile Bateman led a balanced attack with 12.

Pinewood 54 Palo Alto 46. Four Panthers in double figures led by Ava Uhrich's 15 helped them overcome a four point Paly halftime lead. Kayla Peters led the Vikes with 16. Pinewood is through to the finals with a win against SHCP. But they're out with a loss. If I'm doing my math right, Paly can still advance to the finals with a win against SI, if Pinewood loses. First prize is a matchup with Mitty. Second prize may be a lower division in Norcal. Hmmmm.

SHCP 66 SI 52. They say it's tough to beat the same team three times in a season, and it was tougher for Sacred Heart tonight. Only a two point game at the end of the third, before they pulled away for the victory. Reza Po had at least 30. But they need a win against Pinewood and a Palo Alto loss to advance out of their pool.
