NorCal Playoff Appearances

Found myself seeing a bunch of NorCal guys in the NFL Playoffs this past week. Here is a rough list but pretty cool seeing so many locals makkng an impact

Tom Brady Bucs
Vita Vea Bucs
Jevon Holland Dolphins
Jonah Williams Bengals
Joe Mixon Bengals
Arik Armstead 49ers
Da'Ron Bland Cowboys
Isaiah Hodgins Giants
Taron Johnson Bills
DeAndre Carter Chargers

Crystal Springs 50, Pinewood 41

Talk about unprecedented. The recent Crystal Springs WBAL win over perennial private powerhouse Pinewood is one for the history books. It's never happened before, according to all available materials. The Gryphons are 13-2 overall (close losses to Riordan and Summit Shasta mar the record). All things considered, the Hillsborough unit (which has a thin girls' hoops resume by any definition) has to be considered a title contender in one of the better girls' leagues in the Bay Area. Despite the surprising loss, it would be foolish to dismiss Pinewood's WBAL prospects as well.

Win No. 300 for SHP hoops Coach Tony Martinelli

By Terry Bernal Daily Journal staff

When Tony Martinelli took over the Sacred Heart Prep boys’ basketball program, he didn’t exactly have any long-term designs on the gig. He only knew he wanted to coach varsity basketball.
Some 16 years later, Martinelli is a 300-game winner.
The Gators’ longtime coach earned his 300th varsity win in style, as SHP (3-0 WBAL Football, 9-4 overall) held on for a 61-59 victory at rival Menlo School with a fantastic finish. Junior center Erick Osterloh tallied the game-winning buzzer beater, pulling down an offensive rebound and hitting scoring the put-back.

“Pretty memorable one,” Martinelli said.

1/17/2023 Nor-Cal Open Candidates update

After last week's games some teams that were budding to be an Open destination have had the door closed.
I have selected/edited teams who I feel is Open worthy.

Central Section Candidates
Saint Joseph of Santa Maria tough loss for the Knights to #1 Nor-Cal power MC, however a very good team. Looking solid
Clovis North of Clovis another test at Monterey Trail will increase the Broncos chances or eliminate Open bid.
Clovis West of Clovis Golden Eagles need to win in league over Clovis North next week. Looking solid.

Central Coast Section Candidates
Archbishop Mitty of San Jose Big game between Crusaders and Monarchs tonight. Looking Solid.
Archbishop Riordan of San Francisco Could be wavering after losing to Jesuit. Crusaders have opportunity.
to improve. Looking solid.

North Coast Section
Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa loss to Windsor dents but not pushing out of contention. Cardinals need Help.
De La Salle of Concord huge win for the Spartans over West Linn at home. Looking solid.
Dougherty Valley of San Ramon wildcats face So-Cal Power Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks. Looking solid.
San Ramon Valley of San Ramon loss to Cal will make it harder for the Wolves to an at large bid to the open.
Salesian of Albany Pride nice win over a tough Capital Christian team, looking solid.
Branson of Ross Bulls taking care of business in Marin County. Looking solid.
Clayton Valley Charter of Clayton Ugly Eagles big win over Campolindo and Monte Vista, looking solid.
Dublin has big matchups this week with Cal and DLS. Gaels face uphill battle but still possible.
Campolindo of Moraga tough loss to CVC might be too much to overcome unless they win NCS Open, this might be Cougars last stand to get back to the Open.

Northern Section
Pleasant Valley of Chico Losing to Lincoln of Stockton will likely eliminate any at large bid.

Sac-Joaquin Section
Modesto Christian looking solid. Tough games with big showdowns at Quincy Shootout on Friday versus Saint Rita of Chicago, then Saturday vs. Vashon of Saint Louis.
Folsom Can show why they are a top team Saturday at Moreau Catholic. Bulldogs are bullying their opponents. Looking solid.
Jesuit of Carmichael big win over Riordan. If healthy the Marauders can beat anyone. Looking solid.
Inderkum of Sacramento Tigers should cruise through league play. Looking solid.
Vanden of Fairfield tough loses to Bishop Montgomery of Torrance and Saint John Bosco of Bellflower, another tough matchup for the Vikings on Saturday at Redondo Union of Redondo Beach. Another loss and they will be re-directed to Divisional playoffs.
Atwater if the Falcons remain undefeated, they might not want to be selected to the Open. The C.I.F. likes to place emerging teams in the mix. Needs Help

Busy Friday for Recruiting

Sacramento State is a program that is usually out in front of prospects for the next cycle. Four 2024 prospects who received offers from the Hornets were Whitney cornerback Phoenix Rose (5-foot-11, 160 pounds), Capital Christian athlete Kayo Patu (6-foot-1, 170 pounds), Davis TE/DL AJ Hasson (6-foot-5, 260 pounds) and Casa Roble athlete Cole Owens (6-foot-0, 185 pounds).

Arizona gave out offers to a pair of NorCal prospects in Palma 2024 wide receiver Logan Saldate (6-foot-0, 185 pounds) and San Ramon Valley 2025 linebacker Marco Jones (6-foot-4, 210 pounds). Also a baseball player, Jones was one of the most productive defenders in the region this past season regardless of class.

Sheldon 2026 offensive lineman Tommy Tofi (6-foot-6, 320 pounds) added an offer from Utah to go with his first offer from Nebraska. Tofi has the makings of the next high level lineman to come out of Northern California.

Also saw it noted on a basketball thread that Stanford HC Troy Taylor was in the region. Visited Folsom 2023 TE Walker Lyons and then checked out Oak Ridge-Del Oro game (potentially for Edwards and/or Pinnick)

Granada @ Cal Hi

As I mentioned last night, I was unable to get a ticket into DLS for the game I most wanted to see, so I am down in San Ramon…

Already, during the frosh game, I’ve witnessed a couple unusual things…. When the last time you saw a (somewhat lower, but still) LeBron-style chasedown SWAT in a freshman game?? I just did…

And, it’s not anywhere near Halloween, but they just played. “Monster Mash” during a time out…. That’s random…

Dublin v. Cal Hi

My orig. plan was DV at Granada, but I couldn’t land a ticket…

So, I am hanging out at Dublin, tripleheader v. Cal Hi. Right now, the frosh game has Dublin in front, 11-10 late in the first quarter…. Enogh about that for now, the varsity game is the one people care about…

Dublin varsity is 13-6, ranked #12 in the north coast section, and the Cal Hi varsity is 14-5, rakned #11 in said section.

Meanwhile, the Dublin frosh scored 10 points in under a minute to end the quarter with a flourish, 21-10.
