Look For This Show

There was a show I saw on Studios Fifty/ 50 shorts on ESPN 2. It was a half hour show, part of a series.
It’s about a basketball league for women over 85. That’s right, they are all over 85 years old.
Make no mistake, these are not old ladies, they are Basketball players. They go on the road playing in Tournaments.
A lot of the story’s are about the different peoples lives and what motivates them. The stories are poignant and also funny.
If you truly love hoops you will love this. Do yourself a favor and seek this out.

Here’s wishing you great hoops

Is it time to allow high school coaches to recruit?

Let’s be honest here. It happens behind the scenes. Coaches will never admit it but those within the inner circle know it goes on. And the privates, who do not have recruiting boundaries and are in many cases backed by the Archdiocese, are walking away with the vast majority of the talent by a large margin.

It begs the question whether it is time to start openly allowing all coaches to recruit (or market themselves and their programs) to some extent? I’m not suggesting turning this thing into the Wild West. But simply allow coaches to talk to parents and players, pitch their programs and familiarize themselves with one another within district boundaries.

The reality of the matter is that neither the sections nor the CIF is able to control what currently goes on. So perhaps level the playing field by easing some of the rules that many are getting away with breaking.

2023 Player Spotlight: Blake Nichelson RB/LB Manteca

Blake Nichelson (6-foot-2, 205 pounds) was a dominating player for Manteca this past season on offense and defense. He runs with vision and power with some breakway speed to outrun second and third level defenders. On defense, he comes off the edge with speed and can shake blockers to make the tackle in front of him. He also chases down plays well. His college future is at linebacker.

Nichelson has offers from around the country including nine of the 12 Pac-12 schools (Stanford, Oregon and Colorado are the ones who haven't offered). He is Manteca's biggest recruit in at least the last 20 years.
