ANOUNCING THE 69TH ANNUAL GRIDLEY INVITATIONAL

ANOUNCING THE 69th ANNUAL GRIDLEY INVITATIONAL December 7th 8th & 9th 2023

I think we have put together another competitive Tournament.

It’s been 34 years since Clayton Valley, last made an appearance at Gridley. Here’s a sidelight: The A.D. for Clayton Valley is none other than Eric Bamberger. He was the two time MVP, and the top scorer for the tournament. Playing for Ygnacio Valley in 1986 & 87 ( 87* Year 3 point rule started. )

We welcome back Clovis North. They return with almost a full roster.

Salesian returns yet again. They have the all time record for appearances, with seventeen.

Branson brings in a loaded young roster. Branson has become a Gridley fan favorite.

Archbishop Reardon: Has several nice pieces coming back.

Sheldon: Returns with a young, but talented group of players.

We welcome San Ramon Valley: Another long ago team who played in 1968. They have some young pieces, and should be competitive.

And Gridley: They could be down forty, but they play like it’s a two point game. Bless their heart.

Hope to see lot’s of friends next season.

Here’s wishing you great hoops.

2023 is a Down Year for Top NorCal Talent

While recruiting guides need to be taken with a grain a salt, they are still one of the better parameters for measuring elite emerging high school talent. Based on the rankings for the class of 2024 it loos like the level of elite talent this year will be down significantly from last year.

A quick look at 2024 shows no Northern California player in the top 20 from Rivals (compared to 5 last year) and only three players listed in the states top 50 (15 last year) and 13 players in the top 100 (23 last year).

247 sports is a little more generous to Northern California but they also have no Northern California player in the top 20 (compared to 8 last year), six in the top 50 (compared to 15 last year), and 18 in the top 100 (compared to 26 last year).

Also it looks like the trend to the two big Sourthn California mega schools continues to accelerate. This year both services list 8 of the top 50 CA players from Mater Dei and 6 from St John Bosco (compared to 2 from Meter Dei and 7 from SJB last year) and 13 from MD and 9 from SJB in the top 100 (compared to 3 for MD and 9 for SJB last year).

I can't remember a recent year where there is not one player from Folsom or De La Salle listed in the state top 100. Also the better leagues in Northern CA are not well stocked. Rivals lists one player from the SFL, one player from the WCAL (247 has three players from the WCAL all from Serra) and noone from the EBAL. The breakdown by section is Rivals 1 in the Oakland section (247 has 2), 2 in the NCS (247 has 1), 4 in the CCS (247 has 6) and 6 in the San Joaquin Section (247 has 9).

Equity move is working

At least on the female side of the ledger, the CIF's effort to create state tournament basketball playoffs based on perceived competitive equity, or talent-balance, seems to be working. This weekend, ten of the 12 finalists in six divisions are public schools. In the past under an enrollment-based arrangement, private and parochial schools tended to dominate. Over on the male side, the new system appears to be working less favorably. There, only seven of the 12 finalists are of the public persuasion. Not bad, but not at the level of the girls. One NorCal section that has yet to benefit from the equity setup is the Central Coast. No CCS girls' team has played for a CIF crown since the new system was instituted. The main reason: The two CCS private/parochial leagues, the WCAL and WBAL, gobble up most of the available talent and leave the publics with scraps. The last CCS public to play for a state title (in a losing effort) was Monta Vista of Cupertino in 1992.
