The Dougherty Valley head coach job is posted on the San Ramon Valley Unified School district website. It will continue to be a rough road there for a year or two, but there are kids in the pipeline now who could make DVHS pretty good after that. With the right coach, of course.

What changed for Dougherty Valley? Had a good amount of success when they first opened.

What changed for Dougherty Valley? Had a good amount of success when they first opened.

For its first few seasons, Dougherty had an improbably high level of talent, including some really good size. Rayven Brooks, Treyvonna Brooks, Jackie Taylor, Caroline Hughes, Natasha Morando, Jasmine Jenkins and several others.

The talent level dropped pretty severely after the 2011-12 season. Also the school was by that time developing a reputation for being intensely competitive on the academic side. Mix in a few toxic parents and suddenly you have a school many serious basketball players want to avoid.

And they have. Either transferring after freshman year or diverting to another school before they ever set foot on campus. I won't name names, but I can think of at least 7 strong players in that category over the last few years.

It doesn't help that California and San Ramon Valley have become viable options recently, after languishing themselves for a long time. You don't have to fork over the money for Carondelet to get a good girls' basketball experience anymore. And people don't seem to have much trouble getting their kids into whatever schools they want to these days.

Dougherty could rise again with the right coach. Someone like Doug Sakamoto at MSJ who can tune up smart, athletic kids without too much size and make them consistent contenders.
