The Aragon High School girls' athletic program completed an impressive Central Coast Section trifecta in 2018-19 when its softball team (head coach Roger Miller) won its first CCS Division 1 championship vs. top-seeded Watsonville, 6-1, on May 25 in San Jose. Female athletes from the San Mateo public school had previously captured the CCS Division 2 volleyball title (head coach Kelsey Stiles) in the fall; they followed up that achievement with a CCS Division 2 basketball championship (head coach Sam Manu) during the winter season. The combined overall record of the three title teams (all of them comprised of local, neighborhood student-athletes) was 69-25. The triple crown was the first for the Dons (the school is nearly 60-years-old). Additionally, research indicates that no other San Mateo Union High School District or Peninsula Athletic League girls' athletic program has ever achieved that feat (volleyball, basketball, softball) before. Aragon is one of six district schools; there are 17 full-time PAL public schools, along with several associated private/parochial schools in certain sports. On a side note, none of the three Aragon CCS title teams won a PAL championship during this academic year. All of them finished second in league action, indicating the relative strength on the female side of the PAL. The Aragon athletic director is Steve Sell, who is also the school's head football coach. Kudos to one and all.
