Cal Hi Rankings...line up to laugh

Common opponent is Our Lady of Good Counsel, at the Nike TOC.

Good Counsel beat both: Poly by six and Mater Dei by eight. That would lead me to think the teams are pretty close, but comparative scores are tricky. I don't think MD has any transfers now eligible -- does Poly?

And isn't it time for your HerbaLife rant about now?

So cal guys think they are this....

: 1. LB Poly (3)
: 2. Chaminade (4)
: 3. Mater Dei (3)
: 4. Brea Olinda (6)
: 5. Cajon (8)
: 6. Troy (1)
: 7. Oaks Christian (5)
: 8. Serra (7)
: 9. Harvard-Westlake (10)
: 10. Windward (11)

Poly would eat MD alive....Socal is laughing at Harold and his team!!!!
Poly would take Mitty by 10....athletes are solders....not politicians

Jazzpt55,

The ranking are almost always wrong. They had the best team in the country as Neumann-Goretti a Phili team who went undefeated playing no one at the end of last season. I thought it was a no brainer. St. Mary's of Stockton had only one early season loss to I think Blackmon in the TOC. Mater Dei ending up winning the TOC and then loss to St. Mary's of Stockton in the California open state championship. Strength of schedule, how you finish, and the challenges you over came truly separate who is the better teams IMO.

So once again St. Marys of Stockton (which is beatable) is the best team in the nation. Everyone else is playing to claim 2nd best at this point. And yes, I see a few giggles in the rankings, because I know any "good" team with a "good" coach can upset or even beat a "so call " better team. That's why they play the games. To let the games decide who's the team with the best coach and best players. Ultimately the games will decide and then you must use your own brains to decide the best team yourself, since rankings most of the times get it wrong.

Many years ago ( I believe it was around 2008 ) the major raters decided that they would not award a national championship to any team that did not leave their state and at least play some teams from out of state. I believe it was in reaction to some team in Chicago that continually ended up undefeated while playing no one.

Not meaning to sound like a homer but awarding Neumann - Goretti the top spot still was less of a head scratcher than placing Blackman at #2 above St Mary's at #3. At least NG ended up undefeated. The criteria for Blackman wasn't very logical, but rather a rationalization for a preconceived perspective. Using that same criteria it would have made more sense to put MD above Blackman since their won/ lost/ and head to head comparison to Blackman was the same as Blackmans was to St Mary's.

Lets look at the logic involved. Blackman had one less loss than the team "MD" that beat them at the NTOC. St Mary's had one less loss than the team that beat them at the TOC. Yet Blackman was elevated above that team "MD" while St Mary's was not. The rational given was head to head competition. It that is the criteria than MD should have been rated above Blackman as well.

Add to that that both St Mary's and MD losses were to highly rated teams which could not be said for Blackman.

What also seemed to have been forgotten was that head to head competition is usually only valid if the teams have an equal record. This was correctly applied to Blackman being rated over "MD" but seemed to have been ignored in respect to the relative ratings of Blackman and St Mary's. Raters have the right to rate teams as the see fit, but they shouldn't pretend that they used an objective formula rather than a subjective opinion.

All three teams placed their fate in the hands of the folks doing the rankings. It is unfair to bash them because they were in a no win once the beaten became the beaters and the beaters then became the beaten. The sad part is that all three should have been ahead of the #1.

I think SMS will win out and finish undefeated and this will not be an issue but if they slip up and leave it thanks of someone else to decide they will be in trouble. Simple formula is win every game and I don't see them have a single digit game the rest of the season. As Dennis Green stated "crown their $&@@"!!!!

I am confident SMS will win out for the regular season. I believe the only competition to test them will be deep into the playoffs for NorCal Open (vs Mitty or Miramonte) and/or for State Open championship. I don't see them being challenged in SJS Sections, not even close. I do believe they have faced their toughest competition this year when they went up against Riverdale Baptist. These two teams should finish 1-2, respectively.

As someone doing national rankings since the mid-90s, I have never been in a meeting where anything was decided. I've only met the USA Today guy a couple times, and our total conversation was about five minutes.

The not-leaving-the-state issue is tricky. Duncanville this year could easily wind up No. 1 without leaving Texas, and traveling no further than Houston -- but from all reports Duncanville is really, really good and beat Blackman of Tennessee, a ranked team.

If SMS wins out, they're No. 1. If SMS loses and Riverdale wins out it gets tricky, especially if Paul VI and Duncanville also win out.

Strength of schedule is indeed important, and Riverdale Baptist, SMS and Paul VI all have tougher overall schedules than Duncanville. But Duncanville might be the best team ...

It's never easy ...
