Wow Folsom goes for 2 with 2 minutes left and stopped....

Terrible decision with so much time left. The downside of not converting is too steep. And we saw exactly that by how much pressure was on Folsom once they forced the punt down 1.

If you just kick the damned XP that last Folsom drive has a completely different level of pressure to it. If there was under :30 seconds remaining in the game — the decision is much more understandable. Because outcome essentially comes down to that single play.

But scoring a 2 pt play with 2 minutes remaining causes your opponent to play aggressively on their next possession with plenty of time to get into scoring position. Meanwhile, not converting gives your opponent a huge advantage.

I’ve said it many times now, but practically every time Folsom faces an opponent that has comparable talent their coaching staff gets exposed. Doherty and his staff took over a ready-made program. They didn’t build it.

And you can see why they couldn’t build it up themselves in outcomes like tonight and in their loss to Serra-SM earlier in the season.

IMO, Folsom has a better all-around team than both Serra-SM and Pittsburg. They lost both games due to poor in-game coaching decisions.

IIRC, they went for 4th down inside their own 10 yard line (maybe inside their own 5) against Serra-SM handing them an easy score in a game ultimately decided by 1 point.

And tonight, let’s forget that they were up 21-0 early and all the mistakes that allowed Pitt to stay in the game, the wanton hubris to go for 2 with over 2 full minutes remaining did them in again.

I’ll also call out Ryder Lyons insistence on trying to play Superman far too much and overextending plays that result in huge negative losses. That $#/t works against vastly inferior opponents, but not against fast, disciplined defenses. That’s something he’s gonna get a crash course in once he gets to the next level.

Circling back to Folsom’s coaches, it’s as if they don’t know what to do offensively if it doesn’t involve Ryder Lyons legs. We’ve seen that multiple times now against DLS, Serra and now Pittsburg. The kid is no doubt very talented and good, but there are limitations to putting all your eggs into that proverbial basket.

Congrats to Pitt for the huge “W” tonight! They were ready for what Folsom had to throw at them and battled back from a huge early deficit that would have caused most teams to tap out. Their defense was flying all over the field and making big time plays. I really hope they find a way to bring home the title next week.

Wow...Pitt defense came up huge.

They were really good, especially in the 2nd half.

I lost count how many times they were able to corral and trip up Ryder Lyons, who is far too used to getting away with holding the ball and seemingly backpedaling in and around and outside the pocket. The Pirates defense really made him pay for that tendency tonight.

While I admittedly was flipping back and forth between the Folsom-Pitt game and the Grant Union-St. Francis game thus missing portions of both games — seemingly every time I was watching Pitt’s defense their pass coverage was excellent! Lots of contested throws and not many blown coverages.

They also found a way to harass Ryder Lyons most the game while maintaining coverage. Major tip of the proverbial cap!

Agree. Folsom should have kicked the XP there, way too much time left. At worst, you go into OT.Folsom should have ran more between the tackles, they had a huge size advantage on the interior LOS. They’re talented enough to make some plays, but they weren’t going to make a living trying to get wide runs vs Pitt. Pitt’s team speed on D is too good for that. Pitt also did a nice job for the most part setting the edge against Lyons, making sure he was kept under raps. Lyons practically beat Pitt single handed last year. Nice win for Pitt, disappointing loss for Folsom.

I agree that I would have kicked the PAT there too for many of the same reasons you laid out. And I would have liked to see Folsom try to hit some small chunk plays to start off the drive and get Pitt's D on their heels. But that said, Pitt's Defense was flying around in the secondary.

Also looked like Pitt was using Searcy as a spy on Lyons which seems like a great idea.

I really like this Pittsburg staff they have. Still bring the same swagger, but things look to be tigher than in the past.

So what is the secret sauce? Why do DLS, Serra and now Pitt seem to trip up Folsom?

D line play, DB’s, a combo of both? Or I suspect a combo of that and coaching.
I’m not a Folsom expert, but have watched plenty of Folsom over the years. Whenever they seem to play a game against an opponent who can punch back they do not seem to respond? Once or twice is a fluke, but multiple coaching staffs and decades and the back of your baseball card is who you are.

They have a nice little program, but man they have never taken that step forward to elite. Part of that I blame on not getting out of their comfort zone which at this point has been beaten to death. I guess it just seems frustrating from the outside, but if that is not the program aspirations then that is absolutely fine to not take the next step.

Pitt was incredible. 28 unanswered points! I really thought it was over when they got down 21-0.
I watched the entire game and here are a few things I took away.

1. Folsom seemed like they were playing not to lose on offense. Very conservative and bizarre play calling.
2. Folsom fix your formations and procedure crap! its week 13 and you guys can't line up correctly. Same thing against OR. Also that going for it on 4th garbage caught up to them as well. This isn't antelope hs. Arrogance will get you.
3. Mosley was the best player on the field and Pitt exposed a coverage weakness by Folsom. That kid's recruiting just blew up even bigger.
4. Lyons can't get away with backyard style running around bs he does against local hs teams. Pitt had better athletes than Folsom and all those antiques proved costly. The boise st kid #15 and UCLA kid #10 had no issues chasing him down. Lyons better learn to stay in the pocket and pass the ball because right now he has a lot to learn before going to next level.
5. Pitt was smart when they started to air it out. Sharma created so many issues inside but Pitts receivers were way better than Folsom's secondary. Love the small QB for Pitt. What a gamer.

Folsom got outplayed, outcoached, and the PItt kids seemed way hungrier. Even the 2pt conversion was a horrible call.

Glad Carmel was able to hang on to their sizable lead - great game and good win for the Padres

That's too bad. . that was a good hard fought game on both sides. I was disappointed to see them not shake hands.

Individually call your team together. Emphasis the importance of respecting your opponent, and then walk the 50 yard to shake hands.

If you wanna fight, do it after the snap, before the whistle blows!

I think it shows also that San Ramon Valley was a better team than they were given credit for. Pitt took a little criticism for how close that game was. SRV was legit all year

If they had a tougher Pre season schedule or if they were placed in a more appropriate league (REC Adobe or REC Valley) St Vincent would’ve had the opportunity of most likely being the 8 seed in D1/Open, and faced DLS.

This is also a case study in how to manipulate CalPreps rankings. I believe they entered the playoffs with a rating between 10-15, now at 30. It’s (the schedule they played this year) definitely not purposeful on SV’s part but it’s interesting to see what they, and other teams, schedule next year.

I know in the SS you get some crazy stuff going on to manipulate CalPrep’s rankings. Resting starters week 10, lose and get a better (lower) division placement, running up scores, and more.

Nothing but respect here for SRV. Very good team with a great QB and one of best defensive players in CA. How about Newman as a d4 school playing SRV even for most of that game. It was a strong year in NCS and weaker year in SJS.

SV has a very good program and their QB will play D1 college football. They smashed Hughson. I'm sure SV competes against the lower tier Adobe teams like Vintage, RC, San Marin this year fine.

Coach teaching the wrong lessons.

Folsom had a good year. That was a tough loss that will sting for a while.

Great defense, good special teams play, and a athletic QB that just holds the ball way too long!

Plus... Hats off to Pitt for not getting discouraged when they were down by 21.

The NCS teams have shined thus far.

DLS, Pitt, Amador Valley, St. Vincent, Arcata & Moreau all heading to the state bowls games, with American Canyon still playing Lassen tonight.

The only NCS team that lost was 4 loss Acalanes, and they had a spirited comeback to come within a 2-point conversion at the end, losing to undefeated Carmel.

Pitt benefitted from a strong non-league schedule as well as playing DLS and SRV prior to Folsom. Lyons simply did not stay in the pocket and developed happy feet. Credit to Pitt's Dline and DB coverage

Lets talk about some of the studs on pitt.
#10 Hudson.. Holy toledo. Believe UCLA commit who seemed to be everywhere.
#15 Calhoun- Boise Commit. Can you say missile on the field. Broncos are getting a stud.
#2 Mosley- He will see an influx of offers after dismantling folsom secondary.
Alcantorre- the better of the QB' last night. What a gamer.

I thought #71 Sharma for Folsom really showed what Texas is getting. He has Sunday potential and Pitt had no answers. Haven't seen that sort of foot speed on a kid in a long time who carries 330 lb at 6"5.

Lincoln, SDG will have similar athletes as Pitt with a dynamic QB who's pops played in the NFL. They beat up on Grant pretty bad earlier this year. Probably the game with even better speed on the field than DLS/MD.

Totally!…. SRV has been legit for the last few years!…. They have been on a great run, should have had 2 wins over DLS during that span!….

I think this also shows what a Historic effort that was by DLS’s Defense to hold that PITT offense to 7 points!…. People trying to diss DLS for “Only” Beating PITT 10-7, but in reality that was an epic, defensive battle between 2 powerhouse teams!….

PITT clearly planted their flag as the #2 team in Nor Cal…. After falling behind 21-0, they kicked the crap out of Folsom and their 20 D1 players 28-6 the rest of the game…. Very impressive win by PITT, really pulling for them to finish off the season with a D1AA state championship!!….

Totally disagree…. This year was an epic fail for Folsom, a team with supposedly 20 D1 players….

They played a Cream puff schedule, Lost to a team with 6 losses at home, Blew a 21 point lead in the most important game they played, and their All World QB was exposed that he only played well against weak competition….

The only thing Folsom can hang their hat on was the won a watered down SJS D1 Title where they didn’t have to play any great teams that could slightly even challenge them….

Nothing less than an Open Birth was what Folsom needed this year…. They have taken a step back….

They have once again proven that if you punch them in the mouth they will fold like a cheap suit and they get rattled and out coached when they play teams who are very physical and can match or beat their speed….

This year was a disaster and empty year for Folsom, not 1 signature win with all that talent….

Carmel’s Ashton Reese takes home the Willis Reed award last night. He injured his foot nesr the end of the 1st half and had to be helped to the locker room by 2 trainers. I was sure he was done and only hoped he might be back for Basketball season. He comes out with what looks like a full roll of tape on his right cleat after the half, limping around and plays the entire 2nd half on both sides of the ball, scoring 2 clutch TD’s.

Those were two well matched teams and neither disappointed!

Yeah. Newman too

Pitt and grant is 2 examples that the pre season matter

Pitt playing Bosco and a good Riordan team propelled them to play well vs de la salle and beat Folsom

Grant playing against de la salle, Clovis east and Lincoln.

Propelled them to beat st Mary, Rocklin and st Francis, 2 of which that are top 7 teams in NorCal

I admit when Pitt went down 21-0 I thought it might be running clock for Pitt.

But they defense and team showed a mental toughness that Folsom has always lacked in these big games

Folsom a great program but when they play great bay area teams like Pitt, serra, DLS. They always struggle with the physicality those teams posses

Folsom more of a spread team with great qb play and great weapons on the outside

Bay area teams that give Folsom trouble dont usually have a great qb (serra did last year) but usually they built on the dline and o line, with a good to great running game and some solid wr play.

Folsom all year was able to move the ball when they wanted except vs serra and Pittsburg.

I think this needs to be addressed by the Folsom coach and staff before u even think about playing so cal teams or out of state teams.

Now grant super impressed me they were 2-19 the previous 3 years before the 2022 season.

Since than 35-8 with a chance to win 2 state titles in 3 years.

But they wins over st Mary and st Francis was extremely impressive mainy cause st Francis and st Mary are the best teams in they league and area.

Grant didn't beat Laguna creek or Kennedy, they beat the best team in the wcal on the road.

I hear there alot of young players on grant so this might just be the beginning of another great run from that school

Yeah I didn’t pay that much attention to Grant this season, based on the last few seasons. But they seemed to improve every week and really stepped it up in the postseason! Great to see.

I think it shows that a lack of challenging opponents on your schedule in the regular season can come back to bite you in the post season. Had Folsom challenged themselves schedule wise( which we’ve talked about ad nauseum) they be better prepared for post season play. Most years it doesn’t matter for them because they’re usually so talented. Coach Ramirez at Pitt has raised the level of focus there. Folsom is used to going up 21-0 and feeling the W is a foregone conclusion. Pitt dug deep, realized that they’ve played the likes of DeLaSalle and SJB, and that they weren’t going to give up just because they got down big. When Folsom saw Pitt claw back to 21-14, then 21-21, it was uncharted waters.Pitt’s team speed and athleticism were a problem as well

Couldn’t agree more. Really impressed with Grant on the road like that after a 100 mile bus ride. Coach Ramirez at Pitt continues to impress. Pitt has always had athletes and speed, but now they’re displaying focus and resolve. That win last night was a breakthrough for Pitt. Could be the start of something

I understand the no handshake at the end nothing good was going to come from it.Newbury kinda lost their composure in the 4th when things started going sideways for them. They had at least 3 personal fouls called against them in the quarter .Their center got ejected and a couple of off setting personnel foul penalties as well.

You could hear the PA guy imploring the kids to keep their composure over the broadcast.

Pitt and grant is 2 examples that the pre season matter

Pitt playing Bosco and a good Riordan team propelled them to play well vs de la salle and beat Folsom

Would have liked to see Grant versus Folsom for the SJS D1 title
