Girls Basketball Top 20: Mitty goes back-to-back at Nike TOC

1. Mitty (8-0)

Mitty was the top division of the Nike TOC for the second straight year with wins over George Rogers Clark (68-50), Clackamas (83-77 behind 38 points and 17 rebounds from junior McKenna Woliczko and 14 points from sophomore Ze’Ni Patterson), Mater Dei (59-42, Woliczko had 18 points and junior Devin Cosgriff had 11) and Ontario Christian (59-34, Woliczko had 24 points in the championship game over Ontario Christian and junior Emma Cook 14 points.) Woliczko was named tournament MVP and Cook and sophomore Tierra McCarthy were named all-tournament. The Monarchs are off until after New Year’s when they take on St. Joseph-Santa Maria (January 3) and Ontario Christian (January 4) at the SI20 Showcase.

2. Folsom (7-0)

The Bulldogs are in the midst of a 13 day break before traveling to Florida for the Tampa Bay Christmas Invitational. Folsom has wins over Lincoln-Stockton, Antelope, Pleasant Valley and Oak Ridge and have scored at least 70 points in six of its seven games.

3. St. Mary’s-Stockton (6-6)

The Rams went 2-2 at the Nike TOC with overtime wins over Gilbert (61-53 as junior Mia Jamias led three players in double figures with 21 points) and Denver East (68-63, Jamias had 26 points and senior Nyah Buntan had 21 points). Their losses came to Westview, which is 10-1, by the score of 56-34 and Valley Vista 55-42, Buntan combined for 20 points in the losses. St, Mary’s will be in the Platinum Division of the West Coast Jamboree and opens with Bishop Montgomery.

4. McClatchy (7-2)

Last week, McClatchy beat Whitney 69-36 for its fifth straight win. The Lions boast one of the top starting lineups in the region with Washington bound Nina Cain, Cal State Northridge bound Norret Lewis, senior Breyana Kimmons, junior Laila Stancil-Williams and junior Daisy Throckmorton. McClatchy, which has losses to Mitty and St. Mary’s, will also be in the Platinum Division of the West Coast Jamboree and take on Clovis on December 27.

5. Pinewood (4-1)

The Panthers are 4-1 with only a loss to national power Long Island Lutheran. They have a strong core four all averaging double figures with Southern Utah bound Vallory Kuelker, senior Katherine Garr, senior Jolyn Ding and junior Caitlyn Kramer. Pinewood has back loaded its schedule post Christmas with 18 scheduled games between January 2 and February 18.

6. Acalanes (8-0)

With Sophie Chinn back in action, Acalanes beat Benicia 73-35 as Cal State San Bernardino bound Ariana Hallstrom had 18 points. The following day, Acalanes beat Sacred Heart Cathedral 78-55 behind 31 points from Cal Poly bound Dulci Vail. This week, the Dons will travel to San Diego for the Holiday Prep Classic. They are in the top bracket opposite San Ramon Valley, but will open with Paramont on December 26.

7. San Ramon Valley (6-1)

The Wolves have been off since December 14 heading into this week’s Holiday Prep Classic. They open with Foothill-Nevada on December 26 and would face the winner of host Westview or Long Beach Poly if they win. In San Ramon Valley’s lone loss to Clovis, sophomore Carly Stern had 20 points and sophomore Ella Gunderson had 19 points.

8. Carondelet (10-2)

Carondelet went 3-1 in the Joe Smith bracket at the Nike TOC. Five players were in double figures, including 13 from junior Sophia Ross and freshman Niylah Christopher in a 72-48 win over Perry-Arizona. Junior Layla Dixon and sophomore Janel Nevares each had 13 points in a 55-46 loss to Moreno Valley. Dixon and Ross combined for 32 points in a 64-43 win over La Jolla Country Day. Sophomore Celeste Alvarez went for 17 points in the final game against Fayetteville (56-54). The Cougars will play Livermore tonight.

9. Priory (7-1)

Priory beat Los Gatos 46-42 to run its win streak to seven games. Junior Ugreat Daniels had 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals and sophomore Sasha Johnson had 12 points and three assists. The Panthers will participate in the Diamond Bracket of the West Coast Jamboree and open with Perry-Arizona. Vanden and Salesian are also in the bracket.

10. Sacred Heart Cathedral (8-1)

After winning eight straight to start the season, Sacred Heart Cathedral fell to Acalanes 78-55. They had previously only given up more than 49 points in a game once. This week, Sacred Heart Cathedral will take on Lowell on December 27.

11. Bishop O’Dowd (5-3)

Junior Jayla Stokes had 14 points and sophomore Ella Bibbins had 10 points, but the Dragons dropped the opener of the Nike TOC to West Linn (50-38). However, they won the final three games to win the consolation title of the Mike Desper bracket. Stokes added 22 points in a 59-38 win over Basha and nine points in a low scoring 36-32 win over Sunnyslope-Arizona. In the final game, Stokes had 15 points and nine points from Tulane bound Madison Gordon. Bishop O’Dowd will return to Arizona for the Holiday Classic BXB.

12. Vanden (5-4)

Vanden played in the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas and got off to a good start as freshman Kailee Brown scored 17 points in a 58-38 win over Maple Mountain. Next, the Vikings fell to Sierra Canyon 55-33, but bounced back with a 60-58 win over Birmingham behind 20 points from senior Calonni Holloway. They finished 2-2 overall after losing to Owyhee 47-36 with junior Kaitlyn Garcia contributing nine points. Vanden will open the West Coast Jamboree on December 27 against Chaminade.

13. Oakland Tech (6-2)

Junior Jhai Johnson had 47 points, 22 rebounds and five steals in a 77-41 win over McNair. Oakland Tech will be in this week’s Platinum Division at the West Coast Jamboree and opens up with Mater Dei, which just finished third in the top bracket at the Nike TOC.

14. Cardinal Newman (7-3)

The Cardinals finished second at the Justin-Siena Christmas tournament in losing to Clovis 60-44 despite 14 points apiece from Santa Clara bound Kate Schat and freshman Saundra Johnson. Both players made the all-tournament team. Cardinal Newman will take part in the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic and is in the NAIA Premier Bracket and opens up with JSerra Catholic.

15. Riordan (4-2)

Riordan has been off since a December 14 win over Heritage and will take part in the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic. They will face Spanish Springs in its opener and are in the same bracket as Cardinal Newman. Sophomore Tallyah Nasol is their leading scorer at 14 points per game.

16. St. Ignatius (5-1)

St. Ignatius notched a pair of wins last week over Salesian (53-41) and Lick-Wilmerding (73-29) heading into this week’s Surf and Slam Tournament in San Diego. The Wildcats haven’t allowed more than 56 points in a game this season.

17. Los Gatos (2-4)

Los Gatos beat Notre Dame-Belmont (67-45), but fell to Priory (46-42). Two of the Wildcats’ losses have been by four points or loss. The challenging schedule continues at the West Coast Jamboree as they open with Antelope in the Emerald Bracket.

18. Antelope (7-1)

Playing at the Oak Ridge tournament, Antelope beat Gregori 75-30 and Atwater 61-56 as talented freshman Londyn Odom went for 28 points and 16 rebounds. They will take on Pleasant Valley today before heading to the West Coast Jamboree after Christmas. They open with Los Gatos with Lincoln-Stockton and Redwood also on their side of the bracket.

19. Pleasant Valley (8-3)

Pleasant Valley jumps back in at No. 19 after beating Colfax (50-42) and Oak Ridge (49-22) at the Oak Ridge tournament. After finishing off tournament action today, the Vikings will head to Southern California and take part in the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic).

20. Salesian (6-2)

Senior Jamia Sawyer had 26 points, eight rebounds and seven steals in a 60-41 win over Monte Vista. Sawyer and freshman Emma Bryant each had 17 points in the 56-35 win over Marin Catholic. In between, Salesian dropped a 53-41 game to St. Ignatius despite 16 points from senior Janiya Sawyer. The Pride will take on Fairmont Prep to start the Diamond Division of the West Coast Jamboree.
