Last night Prolific Prep (Napa) and Utah Prep (Hurricane) put on one of the greatest high school basketball games of all time.

AJ Dybantsa the number 1 prospect had 49 points. Watching him play is just something else. He’s like KD, but with hints of Anthony Davis’ length and ability to affect the boards

Oh 49 wasn’t the high scorer, that would be the number 2 prospect Darryn Peterson who had a whopping 58 points including the game winning 3 point shot down 2. He reminds of a SGA with his ability to score, but I think he has a chance to be better. Which is insane to say, but DP is different.

I know some of you are against Prep school basketball, but sit down, watch this game and just enjoy basketball poetry in motion.

19-20 year olds are not high school age…at least not when I attended…lol.
The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) has age restrictions for high school sports. Students must be under 19 years old on September 1 of the school year to participate in sports.

Darryn literally turned 18 less than a month ago. When he started at Prolific for the first couple of months he was 17.

Dybantsa the exact same thing. Actually Dybantsa was in 2026 and he reclassed into a better class, because that is how good he is.

Look if your going to talk, go ahead and talk, but your a joke if you think all of the kids are 19. When DP and AJ turn 19 they will be getting drafted in the top 3 or higher of the 2026 draft. That’s what those two will be doing at 19

Quite the contrary the grind session actually has 8th graders playing and no 5th years are allowed. It’s a tall task for any 8th grader, but no competition is better in America right now! By the time those 8th graders become juniors and seniors they are a lot more well positioned for a college scholarship/s offer.

Was referring to when I was in high school, back in late 80’s, it was uncommon to have a 19 year old on your high school team….Now it’s the norm. Was not considered high school age back then.

And lets be real….some of these kids are 20-21 year olds coming in from these other countries, especially at these prep schools.

So, basically for CIF purposes, it is no turning 20 prior to your HS Graduation ......???? The other ? for the prep schools is do they allow 5th year HS athletes?

Sounded like a great game. I've been to some good ones over the years.
Hard to match the following state champ games however in terms of magnitude.
Oak Ridge (Ryan Anderson) beating Mater Dei
Palo Alto (Jeremy Lin) beating Mater Dei

Prime curriculum is Basketball 101
Winter season laced with collegiate.styled road traveling...ball players from every corner of the globe no yellow bus picking up these...ahem students

It's prep...preparation for D1 scholarships and pro hoop realization
These prep schools have turned out more potential pros than 20 random NorCal leagues combined the last 5 years

Yes it's PREP hoops

So AJ has the best attributes of both KD and AD and DP has more upside than SGA...... Pretty sure this post won't age well.

Still have zero interest in watching any of these "high school" games but don't blame the players or parents for pursuing this angle with the top 1% or so of players. I suspect a number of the "marginal" players who go this route end up regretting their decisions later in life by forfeiting a "real" high school life.

Kid says coach I can’t practice today my grandma is taking me out to dinner, today is my real birthday… I still laugh at.
I remember 19 yr olds playing in the 70’s very common in Texas especially football

Come to Napa and watch Peterson play one game in person, and your mind will change.

And btw I want to say I love CIF Basketball. For me personally, Stuart Hall winning the state title is the greatest game I have ever witnessed.

But in terms of a basketball game, seriously you can pull up the game online and it was just unreal to watch AJ and Peterson go at it.

HS, AAU, Prep, whatever, DP is something special. I agree, see him while the tickets are under $20.

I should have more of an open mind on the subject of prep basketball and I'm sure that I'd enjoy watching this high-level of basketball. It doesn't need to be an either or situation so I am glad that you can enjoy both.

Is Peterson still committed to going to Kansas (one and done) or is he planning on taking another route to the NBA? From clips that I've seen - I tend to like Peterson's game more than AJ as he seems to be more polished or skilled at this point although AJ while still a little raw probably has higher upside.

I might suggest that going the prep route isn't real in the sense that it isn't your "average" high school experience that's all. These are still kids after all and not many of them have the good fortune of playing professionally so I feel like missing out on the typical high school experience is something that I would have missed. To each their own though and everyone has their own path so no judgements either way - i.e., not trying to insist that I'm right or anyone is making a bad choice.

You can really sum it up by describing it as chasing a dream. Nothing wrong with that. If the reward is a career where you have hundreds of millions of $$$, then why wouldnt you take the more modern path (preps/academies) that leads you there? Im old school like you where I miss seeing the high school with actual kids from that area. Theres a sense of real pride and community building your program that way. Welp! Here's to the 80s, 90s, and 00s!

i get it, but this isnt any different than the private schools. riordan isnt littered with kids from hunters point, north beach or bayview.

and it def aint your average school, but the players on that team arent average either. well the top 8 or so arent. they still go to a regular high school, they just get much better training and competition.

all that to say, i loved my high school, although the neighborhood was quite dangerous i wouldnt have left to go play at a prep school. i also do not think my father would have let me. amazing cuz he let me play in the worst area of the city. lolll

Riordan still has kids from the HP/Bayview, Sunnydale, Fillmore, Potrero Hill and the Mission/Excelsior. Just not as many as in years past as many families have moved out of the area…

Hillman is from Cameroon
Emeneke is from Cameroon
Armstrong is from Marin
Seals is from Santa Cruz
Bush is from Pinole Valley
Tofi is from Woodside Priory

I’m sure I could continue to list guys who aren’t from Sf, Rencher is essentially the only one with regular PT that is from the area.

Tofi is from San Francisco. Now let’s see all the other out of area kids around the WCAL?
On the girls side - check out perennial national power Mitty’s roster.

I remember Tyson Chandler's Dominguez (Compton) team in the 90s that lost to St. Francis. If there was ever a no way that could happen, it might have been that.

They're SCUMBAGS

Can you fill out SHC’s? Doesn’t Pachulia’s kids who go to DeLa live in Moraga? My point is Riordan still has kids from the City. Is anything done by the school violating CIF, CCS, WCAL rules? Funny how the same posters singling out Riordan are the same ones that buried the school a decade ago. Now that the school is thriving by opening up a boarding school going co-ed and attracting out of area players, the haters come out-namely from the same tired adult posters who call out kids by name yet hide behind screen names who are being lapped by SI and Riordan and now VC in hoops.
