I will be unable to attend the girl's open championship between AM (24-2) & Pinewood (24-2). I was
hoping that someone would provide direct on-line access to such an important game. Help?

That was a really good game. Madeline Holland led all scorers with 23 points. Haley Jones had 17 points and 9 rebounds. Daniella Guglielmo chipped in 12. For Pinewood, Mikaela Topper had 17, Klara Astrom 15, and Akayla Hackson 12. Brianna Claros did not play for Pinewood.

Where was Hannah Jump....did she even play

Hannah Jump had 3 points and 7 rebounds. Mitty appeared to be bigger at every position, so that probably made it hard for her to have her usual game. (I haven't seen Pinewood before this year, but I do know that Jump scores at about 16 ppg.) I was quite impressed by the quality of play by these two teams. Not surprising given their rankings, I guess.

Mitty owned the paint at both ends. lots of biocks, putbacks.

I didn't see the game but it was played with to very good coaches. Sounds like Doc did another excellent job working with once again a smaller (less athletic) and less deep team than his opponent. He could care less about over blown hype, or if a team is ranked higher. Sue and Mitty's size appeared to take Hannah Jump out of the game offensively. But Pinewood must have adjusted accordingly to stay in striking distance? When all else is equal or not, "coaching" can really make the difference. I know without seeing the game both teams probably had pretty good ball movement and got several people involved in the scoring. Making them harder to game plan for, adjust to, or defend. And most likely Doc didn't try to rotate as many players as Sue. Because to my knowledge Mitty is most likely a bit deeper than Pinewood, so Doc probably took that into account. He probably just rotated to keep his players out of foul trouble? Yet allowed them enough rest to adequantly match up plus stay in rhythm. Just as we talk about high level players, I can't say enough about high level coaching. I love them both !

Can anyone answer why Bri Claros didn't play for Pinewood?

Just another display of the power in the North. And even more reason why the CIF or whoever makes the decision shouldn't even think about placing CW (the 2nd ranked team in the state) in the North with Mitty the #1 ranked team in the state. The South doesn't have the typical dominant Chaminade, Brea Olinda, Mater dei, etc... Meanwhile the North has Mitty, Pinewood, Carondelet, SMS, Bishop Odowd, Salesian, CN, MM, Mc Clatchy, Vanden, Heritage, SMB, WC,Campolindo, Folsom, Lincoln, ESP, Sac, and others I left out.

Why stack all the powers up North?

I did see them game...not enough drive and kick for threes...by PW....the needed to take 10 more threes and make at least 6 of them..to have a chance...they didn't even take enough threes so they didn't have a chance...terrible coaching by Doc

I believe Claros has a concussion ...

As for SoCal, I don't think any of us know how good Harvard-Westlake and Etiwanda are -- and teams like Windward and Alemany are mysteries to us as well. We'd like to believe Pinewood is better, but do we really have a basis for that belief?

Right now, Mitty, SMS, Clovis West and Long Beach Poly seem like the best in the state, and I would be surprised if one of them did not win the Open title.

My guess is a concussion also after seeing Carlos go down against shc.

Great game by both teams. Pinewood made a few timely 3's down the stretch to make it interesting the whole way. For a second it looked like Mitty was going to blow it open, I believe they had the lead up to 11 or 12 at one point. I agree that PW didn't shoot enough 3's. I don't know what they average as far as attempts but I think it's gotta be significantly higher than the 20 they took. Mitty actually "out 3'ed" them in the first half making 5 compared to PW's 4. Then like mkbgdns said, the paint domination kicked in.. Mitty didn't hit a 3 in the second half, and finally got to the ft line. There was a ton of great plays on both ends. Astrom is strong as an ox and can hold her own against bigger kids. I may take her over jump just because of her relentless physical nature. PW with a 4 seed tomorrow???

Jazz,

As good a coach as both you and I are (especially from Monday quarterback sidelines view) I'm not sure we would be able to prepare and game time coach a team better than Doc consistently does. In my opinion Doc was a 30-40 point under dog in both this years game against the #1 team in the nation Mitty, and last season's #1 team in the nation SMS. So his ability to even be in the games is a testament to the fine job he consistently does with under sized under athletic shallow teams. He definitely does more with less. But every coach no matter how so call great they are supposed to be can have a bad coaching day. A good coach can and has been out coached. Just as a good player can have an off day. Neither should be defined by a one or two game or season performance. And like players all coaches should aim at getting better. Because the biggest room in the world for us all is the room for improvement.

"Right now, Mitty, SMS, Clovis West and Long Beach Poly seem like the best in the state",

If that were true, which it may indeed be, then does it make sense to put 3 of the 4 in the North? And have the #1 and #2 ranked teams in the same region?

Thanks, Clay, cb1, and onBall8 for the update on Bri Claros. I wish her a full and speedy recovery. But it is wise to take a head injury seriously.

I agree. I think CW stays in the South, especially since the bottom candidates there (LA City champ, No. 2 in Central and San Diego sections) don't seem as strong as the bottom candidates in the North.

The fact is that Mitty game planned for PW's 3 point shooting. They consistently had their long wings challenging the kick to the outside, in fact blocking a few attempts. It is one of the reasons PW had early success scoring inside with drives and weak side passing.

Doc did a great job of coaching. What should he have done when Mitty took away the 3 - feed his 5"8" post player? PW, with their smaller team, smaller bench and short a guard due to injury, it's amazing they stayed around as long as they did. These are two of the best coached, disciplined teams in Nor Cal, regardless of Dave's assessment that the coaches are only above average.

.they didn't even take enough threes so they didn't have a chance...terrible coaching by Doc

typical penetrating analysis by the man who brought the toilet image to this forum.

he asks if Jump played, later says he saw the game. I guess he's getting indirect with his putting down kids. by adding Doc to his list of sub-par coaches, he's got all the best coaches in Norcal not meeting his standards. jokept55.

Mitty blocked/deflected a number of 3's, a reflection of their length, quickness, and body control on the defensive perimeter. it's tough to block so many without any fouls, but Mitty did. they denied open 3 looks. dribble penetration often resulted in no easy finish, and the ball handler surrounded by taller defenders, no passing lanes to teammates.

given Mitty's relentless press, and several backcourt turnovers and scores it yielded, the absence of Pinewood's starting PG probably made the margin of victory larger. I'm hoping she was just held for a mandatory concussion protocol (as she should be), not a serious head injury.

The only thing Jazz has done that surprised me was get a credit card so he can watch the games on line. I guess his mom still loves him.

I would agree on the assessment of Astrom. The referees really let her bang away last night . It was very physical inside. Mitty does truly bring that hockey line change into the game with absolutely no drop off in skill set or talent. That is really difficult to handle. A team needs to be on the entire game with no let up at all
