No matter how innovative and constructive the PAL/SCVAL football merger has been so far in 2022, struggling programs are still on life support. There were two forfeits this week, by Saratoga and Gunn. That does not bode well for the future.

Start capping roster sizes then.

The issues stem from the some of the powerhouse programs, namely the WCAL schools, having massive roster sizes while local publics and left to scratch and claw for whatever is left. Keep roster sizes to 50 and 100 total within the program and I promise you that will change.

So freshman who never played football will be cut before they ever get a chance to be exposed to football since at a quality program there will likely be more then 25 players wanting to try football ? Not sure how cutting children from playing football is going to encourage the rise of interest in football?

if he is that interested in playing football he will find somewhere to transfer to and play.

Plus, what percentage of freshman at Serra have never played before?! Most of them are recruited over!

I don’t think roster capping is the issue. There are numerous kids who would benefit from being one of the top guys at their home school than being a bottom of the roster player at a section power but that’s up to the families. Kids also go to high school for more than a sport.

What I do think would benefit a lot of schools is transitioning to 8 man football. The lack of depth is less hindering in that format and the chance to be in a more positive football environment goes up IMO. I know many look at it as waving the white flag, but is the better outcome to go 1-9 or 0-10 with forfeits and blowouts?

Idgaf about Serra that has nothing to do with my family, but I’m not going to change my entire life around driving around the South Bay to find a place for my kid to play football that he can get under the 25 kid cap that is ****ing absurd and stupid af

high school football isn’t that big of a deal, just let the kids get out of the house and not play video games and get some exercise with their friends don’t make so complicated

No, you send him to his community public school that he is zoned too. I get the luxury of the privates bussing kids to campus to where the parents ain’t gotta do a thing but if driving a mile and a half twice a day or giving your kid $3 for bus money is too much maybe parenthood isn’t for you.

And if my kid can’t play at this local school that is a couple of miles away because of there are more then 25 kids then what ? I gotta seek out schools further away and do transfers? It’s not that serious bruh it’s just high school football let them play wherever they want

if children sports are that serious for you then I think parenthood might not be for u

Well over half of players on Serra’s freshman teams haven’t played tackle before.

I think the answer is the value some schools put on the sport of football. If some of the bottom programs brought in top notch coaches and paid them this would cause a lot of athletes to stay at their home schools.

Does anyone know the difference in how much a coach gets paid at a public school vs a private school? What about weight rooms, locker rooms, and all of that stuff?

How did the shift from public to private happen? when I was younger public schools were better at football.
