Salesian hosts Pinewood... NorCal Semi!

I have arrived here at Albany HS, ready for the Salesian girls v. Pinewood.

Salesian is ranked #7 in CA, and Pinewood is at #11.

These two storied programs have met once this season already, Salesian coming out on top in that one, 49-39.

That was at Pinewood’s tiny gym, and, well... This one is not. Pinewood will need a top effort to get this one...

Personally, I have seen neither team live this year, so I get to see some new players

Salesian charging foul... Way out of control... 4:24 left 1st.

Nice pass, backdoor to Pinewood #20, fouled... FT’s split. 9-2...

Good thing for Salesian that Pinewood is 0-3 from distance... Moving Salesian screen, turnover... still 9-2, 2:25 left...

Another Pinewood 3 is missed... out of bounds to Salesian, 2:13 left.

Salesian finally gets it in to #21, big girl sinks it inside...

But Pinewood nails a 3! 12-4.

Salesian #30 fouled, 2 shots... high-bouncing shot way up off the rim, but it goes... The next does the same, but... Nope.

Salesian steal, drive and score... 12-7 now.

Salesian 3 at the buzzerrrrrrrr.... Nope. 12-7 after 1.

Stepback long 2 for Pinewood... answered by Salesian #21 with a 3-ball. 14-12 Pinewood. 6:22 left.

Salesian steal and drive to a short J... ties it up, but Pinewood right back with a score...

Terrific ball-fake and drive by Salesian... and layup goes. FT good, Salesian gets its first lead, I think... 19-18. 3:08 left...

PInewood fouled, double bonus... Both go. 20-19 Pinewood. Pinewood fouled... FT’s split... 21-19. 34.9 left in the half... Titanic battle here...

Now 23 seconds after a pinewood turnover... Salesian’s try fails... 21-19 at the half.

Salesian ties it up, nifty inside dish...

GREAT crossover for a score by Salesian... 30-29.

PW’s vaunted 3-balls just ain’t fallin tonight... My guess is some like 3 or 4 for about 20, maybe a bit more than 15%.

And that’s the quarter score... 32-29 Salesian.

PW on the run, #30 fouled on a shot. FT’s split, but PW gets the rebound and is hacked! #30 back on the line... First goes, second goes. 37-35. 5:08 left

Salesian pass down to #21, who’s not been in a lot due to foul trouble... She scores, is fouled... FT goes. 40-37.PW #23 inside for a shot, fouled... FT’s split. 40-39. Under 4 minutes...

PW #30 fouled, FT’s go... tied up. Seems like the scoreboard is wrong... PW steal, #30 takes a 3, comes down gimpy... can’t chase the rebounder, who score. 42-40. My guess is cramped up... Guess I was wrong on the scoreboard, too.... Nobody’s investigating...

Pass down low to big #21 for a Salesian score... 44-40.

Time out PW, 1:21 left, PW ball...

PW try misses... Salesian #2 rebounds, drives the length of the floor, fouled! FT’s go. 46-40.

A minute left... PW drive, fouled on the floor... Double bonus FT’s split... 46-41.

All-out PW press can’s stop Salesian... long pass to #21, way ahead of the pack for an easy layup... 48-41, 30.6 left after a PW try fails and #21 fouled again.... Time out. 48-41, Pinewood trying to draw up that 7-point play... “Let’s see... Montana to Rice, on 2!”

#21 sinks both... 50-41. Trade of FT’s, 2 each... 52-43. 22 seconds to go... PW sinks one of two... Etc etc etc.... Salesian wins 53-44. That one heck of a game!

The brief injury to Decker, their point guard, really turned the game.

But the injury to Courtni Thompson on the last play of the game may have longer term consequences. She had to be helped off.

Deker was out for maybe a minute and the damage was done. Talk about an MVP. That kid can flat out play

It ain't the size of the dog in the fight it's the what? The size of the fight in th dog. She is a fearless. I hope Thompson isn't seriously injured.
