Very interesting how Whitney H.S. (Division 2) of the Sierra Foothill League (SFL) got invited to play for the Sac-Joaquin Section (SJS) Division 2 playoffs. Whitney has an overall record of 6-21, and 1-9 in league play.
Whitney tied for last place (5th) in the SFL, and has a MaxPreps ranking of #17 in the SJS Div. 2. Based on the SJS postseason playoff criteria, the top 4 teams in the SFL qualify for the postseason, and the top 15 in the MaxPreps rankings for SJS Div. 2 qualify. Whitney did not achieve any of the two criterion.
However, Whitney does have a very high SOS of 17.8 and had a brutal schedule this season, playing Oak Ridge, Folsom, Granite Bay, and Del Oro twice in league play. They also played McClatchy (24-3), Placer (24-2), San Ramon Valley (22-4), Franklin-Elk Grove (twice, 23-5), Colfax (24-4), Lincoln (of Lincoln 24-4), Del Campo (14-13), and Davis (16-12), who all qualified for the SJS postseason.
Not saying Whitney doesn't deserve to fill out the #18 seed in the SJS Div. 2 playoffs, but found it interesting that the SJS playoff committee allowed the invite, despite not meeting the criteria. I think #2 seed Laguna Creek is not arguing about this, since they can scope out #15 River Valley and #18 Whitney the night before; Laguna Creek's next opponent.
